La version française suit la version anglaise.

A tranquil space on the grounds of York’s Glendon Campus now bears the name of a former chancellor dedicated to giving back to the University he attended in the 1970s and 80s.

The area commonly referred to as the quad, directly across from Glendon Manor, will now be known as Place Greg Sorbara/Greg Sorbara Green in honour of Sorbara (LLD ’13, LLB ’81, BA ’78), who served as York chancellor from 2014-2023.

“You have helped guide the University, you are one of those people who have shaped the University, and that’s part of the legacy that you leave, Gregory. The different influences that you’ve had on our University are many, and it really has been transformational,†said ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton at a Nov. 7 ceremony to unveil the sign erected in honour of the naming.

President Lenton reflected on the impact Sorbara made at York as a trusted advisor, mentor, and friend to many, and noted that the Greg Sorbara Green will provide an opportunity for people to learn about him and his legacy for years to come.

“You have always led with a real sense of purpose and conviction, but also with compassion, all of the things that define great leadership,†added President Lenton. “Whether you were championing access to education, supporting student success directly, or just strengthening the relationship that York has had with multiple partners across the region, you have always done so with humility, genuine care, and a steadfast belief in the importance of higher education.†

Sorbara earned his BA from Glendon in 1978 and an LLB from York’s Osgoode Hall Law School in 1981. In 2013, he received an honorary doctor of laws (LLD) from York. In 2014, he was appointed York’s 13th chancellor, the titular head of York’s governance structure, and a member of the Board of Governors. Formerly a long serving and distinguished member of provincial Parliament, Sorbara held senior cabinet roles in the governments of Ontario Premier David Peterson and Premier Dalton McGuinty.

Sorbara called the unveiling event “a very happy day†for himself and his family, noting that ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ transformed his life.

“The fact that this recognition is at Glendon College means so much to me. My years as chancellor have been so important to me. I accepted the invitation to become chancellor for two reasons: first of all, David Peterson was a chancellor so I thought if he could do it, I could do it too,†he joked. “But more importantly, I just needed a way to give back to ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ because, had they not accepted me, had Osgoode Hall said ‘No, no, sorry, we don’t think you can handle a legal education’, my life would have been very, very different. It’s what York instilled in me that allowed me to do the things that gave some context, value, and joy in my life.†

During his time as chancellor, Sorbara greeted tens of thousands of York graduates as they crossed the stage during convocation.

“Every one of those students with whom I shook hands, I really was wishing for them to take from York what I had got from York years and years before.†

A new entrance award established in honour of dedicated York alumnus and former Chair of the Board of Governors Paul Tsaparis (MBA ’84) will enable deserving students to pursue leadership opportunities in the technology sector. President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda Lenton recently announced the Paul Tsaparis Tech MBA Entrance Award in recognition of Tsaparis’ distinguished service to ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ.

The award will enable students to pursue the MBA in Technology Leadership – an MBA program designed for the tech leaders of the future at the Schulich School of Business.

“As I reflect on my service to ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ I am filled with gratitude,†says Tsaparis. “My history started back in 1983 as an MBA student at the Faculty of Administrative Studies (now the Schulich School of Business), where I met fellow students that have become lifelong friends and was inspired by exceptional faculty.†

Tsaparis has contributed more than two decades of service to the University, starting in 1998 with his role on the Dean’s Advisory Board at the Schulich School of Business, where he was actively involved as an executive-in-residence, guest lecturer, and mentor.

“The rewards of this volunteer service have been priceless,†says Tsaparis. “My passion for service is deeply rooted in my belief in the power of education to transform lives.†

Tsaparis also served on the Board of Governors beginning in 2010, and was its Chair from 2018 until his tenure concluded in June of this year. As a member of the Board, he served on multiple committees including the search committees for York’s current chancellor and president.

“Under Paul’s stewardship, the Board has navigated complex challenges and made bold decisions that have positively shaped York’s future, from approving the Markham Campus business plan and advancing the School of Global Health, to championing sustainability and equity initiatives, to playing a pivotal role in securing the home for York’s new School of Medicine,†says President Lenton.

Professionally, Tsaparis has spent 30 years in the global tech sector, including 12 years during which he served as President and CEO of Hewlett-Packard Canada.

In recognition of his dedication to the University, a room in Kaneff Tower, a building Tsaparis spent many hours in as Chair of the Board, will be named the Paul Tsaparis Conference Centre.Ìý

“Under Paul’s stewardship, the Board has navigated complex challenges and made bold decisions that have positively shaped York’s future, from approving the Markham Campus business plan and advancing the School of Global Health, to championing sustainability and equity initiatives, to playing a pivotal role in securing the home for York’s new School of Medicine."

This annual award is given to a network that has demonstrated its dedication and commitment to York through engagement, impact,Ìýand mentorship. Through influential programming, YUEAN has strengthened relationships, expanded professional pathways, and created opportunities for meaningful dialogue within the York community.Ìý

“Selecting the Network of the Year is always a challenging task, but the Education Alumni Network’s impact was undeniable,†reflects Ali Badruddin (BBA ’09), Chair of the Networks Committee on the ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ Alumni Board. “Their commitment to mentorship, leadership development and inclusive programming has strengthened the York alumni community.â€â€¯&²Ô²ú²õ±è;

A central focus of the network’s efforts this year was the establishment of its mentorship program in partnership with the Faculty of Education Student Association (FESA) and the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Robert Savage. Beyond mentorship, YUEAN curated thoughtful and impactful events that connected and engaged a wide community of educators. This year’s highlight was the alumni panel on AI, careers and digital learning, which brought together alumni experts to discuss how emerging technologies and evolving career landscapes are reshaping the field of education and strengthen the bridge between students and alumni working in leadership roles across the sector.

“YUEAN’s accomplishments this year reflect not only dedication, but vision,†says Dennis Garces (BA ’92), Vice-Chair of the Networks Committee on the ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ Alumni Board. “They have created opportunities that bridge generations of educators and create a true sense of connection. Alumni Silver Jubilee Scholarship

Shon Lazarev

The Alumni Silver Jubilee Scholarship is presented to a student who exemplifies excellence in academics, leadership and community impact. This year’s recipient, Shon Lazarev (BS ’25), is recognized for his outstanding academic record, dedication to student advocacy and far-reaching contributions to the York community and Canada’s broader healthcare and chess landscapes.

A competitive chess player and president of ChessBlitz YorkU, Shon revitalized the club through inclusive programming and community-building. He also led the Thornhill Chess Club through the pandemic, organizing over 40 online tournaments and maintaining engagement across Canada’s chess scene.

Shon’s passion for health and science is reflected in his NSERC-funded neuroscience research and volunteer work at Mackenzie Health Hospital. He has supported student success as a Bethune College peer tutor, academic advisor and class representative coordinator.

A strong advocate for student voices, Shon served on the ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ Senate, Academic Policy, Planning and Research Committee and Tenure & Promotions Committee. He is also active in campus outreach and equity efforts including Breaking Stigmas and ManyGreenHands YorkU.

Alumni Golden GRADitude Award

The Alumni Golden GRADitude Award recognizes graduating students who leave ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ a better place thanks to the significant leadership they demonstrated during their time on campus. This year, we are proud to recognize Sebastian Marmorato (HBSc ’25) and Ethan Tucker (BA ’25).

Sebastian Marmorato was honoured with the National CSC Silver Medal, awarded to the top graduating biochemistry student. He received an NSERC USRA to research the photoswitching kinetics of azobenzene-based molecular machines under the supervision of Dr. William Pietro and Dr. Ozzy Mermut.

Beyond academics, Sebastian founded Run Club @ York (YURUN), a campus-wide initiative promoting fitness and well-being. Under his leadership, the club grew to over 200 members and raised over $1,000 for Achilles Canada to support runners with disabilities. Sebastian attributes much of his success to the support of mentors within the Faculty of Science, especially Dr. Kyle Belozerov and Dr. Derek Jackson, with whom he collaborated during the development of CHEM 4055: Enzyme Design in Virtual Reality.

Looking ahead, Sebastian plans to pursue dental school, an interest cultivated while volunteering at Tasios Orthodontics, where he was first exposed to clinical practice and patient care. He intends to remain involved with YURUN as a proud York alumnus.

Ethan Tucker exemplified academic excellence, leadership and a deep commitment to sustainability and equity during his time at York. As a Bermudian-Canadian, his experiences with hurricanes in Bermuda shaped his passion for environmental justice and economic reform.

He founded Ontario’s first chapter of Rethinking Economics, a global movement reimagining economics for people and the planet. Under his leadership, the group launched a cup recycling pilot, donation drives, climate finance panels and a Model COP29 simulation.

Ethan also served as a Peer-Assisted ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ Sessions (PASS) Leader for intermediate microeconomics, contributed to research on gender bias in hiring and recycling behavior and sat on the Economics Department’s adjudicating committee. He was awarded the YUFA Scholarship for achieving the highest GPA in his faculty.

This fall, Ethan will begin a combined JD/MA in Economics at the University of Toronto, supported by the Ted Rachlin Fellowship. He remains committed to building inclusive, sustainable systems and staying engaged with the York community.

Harry Arthurs Alumni Families Entrance Scholarship

Andrew Harrington

The Harry Arthurs Alumni Families Entrance Scholarship is awarded to an incoming undergraduate student who is the child, sibling or grandchild of a ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ graduate, and who has shown exceptional academic achievement and meaningful involvement in community service, volunteerism or other activities.

This year’s recipient is Andrew Harrington, who is about to begin his first year in York’s Kinesiology and Health Science program.

Andrew has been deeply involved in his community through volunteering with the North York Harvest Food Bank and working as a camp mentor for children. These roles helped him build empathy, patience and the ability to stay calm under pressure, especially when working with kids who needed extra support.

A dedicated student and longtime basketball player, Andrew’s passion for physical wellness and teamwork led him to choose kinesiology as his area of study.

He is also proud to be continuing a family connection to York. His mother graduated over 30 years ago and her stories about campus life made a lasting impression.

“I was honestly shocked when I found out,†said Andrew. “It felt amazing to have my hard work recognized, and I’m so excited to be part of the York community.â€

Members of the Belcastro family visit with Markham Campus staff and students in the Belcastro Family Lounge

Louie Belcastro didn’t set out to become an entrepreneur. Like many teenagers, his focus at a young age was on school, his friends and his family. But his father’s sudden death left him, the eldest son, responsible for picking up the family business; and not only did he do that – he brought it to new heights. Now, he’s giving back to the community he grew up in, donating $500,000 to ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ’s Markham Campus in support of its capital campaign and the development of student-focused spaces.

“The university looks amazing. It keeps getting better,†Louie said during a recent visit to campus, where he and his family had the opportunity to meet with students and see the newly named Belcastro Family Lounge, dedicated in recognition of their generous gift. “I know it’s not easy to make this come from paper to life, but it happened. This is a benefit to the community, to the young people who are able to come to this university.†

The Belcastro family business began as a single mobile coffee truck in Markham. When Louie’s father passed away on a family trip to Italy, the 11th grader began operating the truck by day while continuing his high school education at night.

“Through my journey, I met some great people, some great mentors, that helped me,†says Louie. “They would encourage me forward and tell me that I had what it takes. So, I decided I was going to grow in the food service industry. Once I made that decision, then I started expanding.†

Classic Group of Companies has grown into one of the largest food operations in the GTA, serving millions across Canada. And it remains, at its heart, a family business—a defining element of both its growth and its values.

Louie’s children—Joseph, Michael, and Alessandra—are all actively involved in the company, helping lead it into its next chapter. His wife, Angela, has played a central role in its growth, and as a pillar of strength and support for the family throughout their journey.

“This has always been about more than just business,†Louie says. “Angela and I raised our kids to understand that success comes with responsibility—to each other and to the community. Giving back is part of who we are.†

The state-of-the-art Markham Campus would not have been possible without the generous support of philanthropists like the Belcastro family.

“I can’t say enough about what the support of our donors means to our campus, from our staff and faculty to our students,†says Dan Palermo, Deputy Provost, Markham Campus. “By investing in Markham, donors like Louie are strengthening the community and creating countless opportunities for our students for years to come.†

Spaces like the Belcastro Family Lounge provide students with areas to collaborate, recharge and connect with peers—enhancing the overall student experience and fostering community.

Students like Rachael Denov, a first-year student in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation program and a member of the Markham Student Council, are already realizing the impact of the growing campus.

“I knew I wanted to study business,†says Rachael. “I love people, so Entrepreneurship and Innovation really caught my eye. The whole point is to make something new, which was a huge draw for me. And the spaces here [at Markham Campus] have just handed us a ton of new opportunities and technologies we can use.†

For Louie, supporting students like Rachael as well as the community that nurtured his business, is a full-circle moment.

“You have to stay positive, and surround yourself with great people,†he says. “Never stop learning. Life is a journey, and in the end, it really is about helping each other and just being thankful and appreciative. Even though my journey was a little rough, I could never have gotten here if I didn’t experience all of this. Most people give up. You just have to persevere.†

Earlier this month, the ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ Black Alumni Network (YUBAN) and ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ Sexuality and Gender Advocacy (SAGA) Alumni Network held the third annual Black and Rainbow graduation celebrations. Graduates, alumni, faculty, staff, friends and allies gathered at Keele campus to celebrate and honour the achievements of the Class of 2025.

The graduating class of Black-identifying and 2SLGBTQIA+ identifying members were celebrated in a supportive and inclusive environment while providing the graduates with the opportunity to network with alumni.

Hosted by Zoey Wyeld (BFA ’16), Chair, Sexuality and Gender Advocacy Alumni Network, the Rainbow Grad Celebration included inspirational words by graduating student Freddie Wraight (BFA ‘25) and moments of nostalgia and reflection for alumni.

“It was a very reflective and poignant moment for me to have come back to York tonight as an alumni,†says Wasifa Noshin (BFA ’22). “It’s a privilege to get to sit amongst many fellow alumni and celebrate the graduates from 2025.†

Graduates from the class of 2025 were also acknowledged in a celebration ceremony to commemorate their hard work and dedication and highlight their success.

“The Black and Rainbow Grad Celebrations remind us of the power of community when we honour and recognize not only achievements, but identity and resilience in a space where Black and 2SLGBTQIA+ graduates are seen, celebrated and supported,†says Heather Auden, Director, Alumni Engagement.

The graduates also connected with the leaders of YUBAN, who welcomed them to the alumni community and shared words of encouragement.

“Getting feedback from the graduates on how happy they were to cross the stage made me happy that YUBAN is fulfilling its mandate to support graduating students from their last days at York to becoming successful alumni,†says Aisha Imran (BPA ‘22), Career and Mentorship Coordinator, YUBAN. “The success of the third annual Black Grad Celebration is a testament to the resilience and strength we get from working together and lifting one another up.†
