Drawn to the smaller campus and sense of security, it was this supportive environment that became the foundation for a dedicated career in giving back and creating meaningful change.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think what made Glendon quite distinct for me&nbsp;was&nbsp;not only how it lent&nbsp;gradual exposure to new ways of thinking and seeing the bigger world but that in my selection of the study of French and French literature speaking an additional language allowed me to work and be employed in Africa,\u201d says Carol.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to her knowledge of French, Carol was hired to travel to Tanzania to provide support in the formation of a Francophone community&nbsp;by teaching French at a high school in Dar es Salaam \u2013 an experience that would deepen her appreciation for new cultures and strengthen her commitment to serving diverse communities.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThe&nbsp;additional&nbsp;language was a phenomenal bridge that allowed me to appreciate other countries, other communities and other cultures, to give back and contribute to making a difference,\u201d&nbsp;she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it would be Carol\u2019s transformative leadership and contributions in social work, psychotherapy, and healthcare advocacy that would leave a lasting impact on healthcare institutions and the non-profit sector in Ontario.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&nbsp;impact is reflected in her role in the establishment of the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) where she also served as the College\u2019s president, supporting its mandate to protect the public interest, guide professional ethics and accountability and uphold standards of practice.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI always believed in professional accountability,\u201d says Carol. \u201cI think one of my skills was to be able to bring people together and just create conversation. We had representation from&nbsp;various communities&nbsp;including Indigenous Peoples.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a&nbsp;Registered&nbsp;Psychotherapist, social worker and volunteer, Carol has also supported children,&nbsp;women&nbsp;and families through her private practice and as a volunteer for&nbsp;numerous&nbsp;healthcare boards and advisory committees.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat curiosity about mental health and how our minds are part of our health and welfare began when I worked at&nbsp;The Hospital for Sick Children,\u201d says Carol. \u201cThat shaped giving back to the various boards of directors&nbsp;I\u2019ve&nbsp;been asked to serve on. We can all contribute&nbsp;in&nbsp;a myriad of&nbsp;different ways,&nbsp;and it is our duty to contribute to the greater good.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among Carol\u2019s contributions included her work at&nbsp;the Child Development Institute where she helped the agency transform from a daycare to a treatment centre for children,&nbsp;youth&nbsp;and families. She was also instrumental in the development of&nbsp;the Women\u2019s College Hospital Foundation and helped re-establish the hospital as a separate entity following its&nbsp;attempted&nbsp;merger with Sunnybrook.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carol attributes her empathy and understanding towards the communities she&nbsp;supports&nbsp; to&nbsp;the experiences and challenges&nbsp;she\u2019s&nbsp;encountered&nbsp;in her personal life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe other things that have shaped my career are really the tragedies within my own life that have helped me appreciate those circumstances when others also go through them,\u201d says Carol. \u201cThe loss of a child after surgery and parents who died three months apart when I was young, I think that although difficult at times to share, they\u2019ve been profoundly influential in my acceptance of others\u2019 limitations.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Carol\u2019s contributions and impact have been recognized with her appointment to the Order of Canada in 2024, she considers her greatest accomplishments the smaller ones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf there would be one Tanzanian who would remember my contribution, I would feel that was equally as big an accomplishment,\u201d says Carol.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Une dipl\u00f4m\u00e9e de Glendon consacre sa carri\u00e8re \u00e0 des soins de sant\u00e9 \u00e9quitables<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lorsque l\u2019heure est venue pour Carol Cowan-Levine, CM, (B. A. 1967) de choisir son lieu d\u2019\u00e9tudes, il lui a sembl\u00e9 tout naturel de s\u2019inscrire au Coll\u00e8ge universitaire Glendon. Ce sont la petite taille du campus et son sentiment de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 qui l\u2019ont attir\u00e9e. Cet environnement bienveillant a inspir\u00e9 une carri\u00e8re consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019action sociale et \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ation de changements significatifs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u2009Je pense que ce qui rendait Glendon unique \u00e0 mes yeux, c\u2019\u00e9tait non seulement l\u2019exposition progressive \u00e0 de nouvelles fa\u00e7ons de penser et de voir le monde, mais aussi la possibilit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00e9tudier le fran\u00e7ais et la litt\u00e9rature fran\u00e7aise. Par la suite, la connaissance d\u2019une deuxi\u00e8me langue m\u2019a permis de travailler en Afrique\u2009\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carol a en effet \u00e9t\u00e9 engag\u00e9e en tant qu\u2019enseignante dans un lyc\u00e9e de Dar es-Salaam en Tanzanie afin d\u2019appuyer la formation d\u2019une communaut\u00e9 francophone. Cette exp\u00e9rience lui a permis d\u2019approfondir son appr\u00e9ciation des nouvelles cultures et a renforc\u00e9 sa volont\u00e9 de servir des communaut\u00e9s diversifi\u00e9es.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u2009Le fran\u00e7ais a \u00e9t\u00e9 un atout ph\u00e9nom\u00e9nal qui m\u2019a permis d\u2019appr\u00e9cier d\u2019autres pays, d\u2019autres communaut\u00e9s et d\u2019autres cultures, de redonner et d\u2019aider \u00e0 faire changer les choses\u2009\u00bb, ajoute-t-elle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C\u2019est toutefois son leadership transformateur et ses contributions dans les domaines du travail social, de la psychoth\u00e9rapie et de la d\u00e9fense des soins de sant\u00e9 qui ont marqu\u00e9 durablement les \u00e9tablissements de sant\u00e9 et le secteur \u00e0 but non lucratif en Ontario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cette incidence est \u00e9vidente dans le r\u00f4le qu\u2019elle a jou\u00e9 pour \u00e9tablir l\u2019Ordre des psychoth\u00e9rapeutes autoris\u00e9s de l\u2019Ontario (OPAO), qu\u2019elle a d\u2019ailleurs pr\u00e9sid\u00e9, renfor\u00e7ant son mandat de protection de l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat public, d\u2019orientation de la d\u00e9ontologie et de la responsabilit\u00e9 professionnelle et de respect des normes de pratique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u2009J\u2019ai toujours cru en la responsabilit\u00e9 professionnelle, d\u00e9clare Carol. Je pense que l\u2019une de mes comp\u00e9tences \u00e9tait de savoir rassembler les gens et susciter un dialogue. Nous avions des repr\u00e9sentants de diverses communaut\u00e9s, y compris des peuples autochtones\u2009\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En tant que psychoth\u00e9rapeute agr\u00e9\u00e9e, assistante sociale et b\u00e9n\u00e9vole, Carol a \u00e9galement soutenu des enfants, des femmes et des familles dans le cadre de sa pratique priv\u00e9e en plus de son travail b\u00e9n\u00e9vole au sein de nombreux conseils d\u2019administration et comit\u00e9s consultatifs dans le domaine de la sant\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u2009Cette curiosit\u00e9 envers la sant\u00e9 mentale et la fa\u00e7on dont notre esprit fait partie de notre sant\u00e9 et de notre bien-\u00eatre remonte \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque o\u00f9 je travaillais \u00e0 l\u2019H\u00f4pital des enfants malades, pr\u00e9cise-t-elle. Cela m\u2019a permis de redonner au sein des diff\u00e9rents conseils<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>d\u2019administration auxquels on m\u2019a demand\u00e9 de si\u00e9ger. Nous pouvons tous participer de diff\u00e9rentes fa\u00e7ons et il nous incombe d\u2019\u0153uvrer pour le bien commun\u2009\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carol a notamment travaill\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019Institut pour l\u2019\u00e9tude du d\u00e9veloppement de l\u2019enfant. Elle a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la m\u00e9tamorphose de cet organisme d\u2019une garderie \u00e0 un centre de traitement pour les enfants, les adolescents et les familles. Elle a \u00e9galement jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le d\u00e9terminant dans la cr\u00e9ation de la Women\u2019s College Hospital Foundation et a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9tablir l\u2019h\u00f4pital en tant qu\u2019entit\u00e9 distincte apr\u00e8s sa tentative de fusion avec Sunnybrook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carol attribue son empathie et sa compr\u00e9hension des communaut\u00e9s qu\u2019elle soutient aux exp\u00e9riences et aux d\u00e9fis qu\u2019elle a rencontr\u00e9s dans sa vie personnelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u2009Les autres \u00e9l\u00e9ments qui ont fa\u00e7onn\u00e9 ma carri\u00e8re sont les trag\u00e9dies de ma propre vie, qui m\u2019ont aid\u00e9e \u00e0 appr\u00e9cier ces circonstances lorsque d\u2019autres personnes les traversent. La perte d\u2019un enfant apr\u00e8s une intervention chirurgicale et la mort de mes parents \u00e0 trois mois d\u2019intervalle lorsque j\u2019\u00e9tais jeune, bien qu\u2019il soit parfois difficile d\u2019en parler, ont profond\u00e9ment influenc\u00e9 mon acceptation des limites des autres\u2009\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Les r\u00e9alisations et l\u2019incidence de Carol ont \u00e9t\u00e9 reconnues lors de sa nomination \u00e0 l\u2019Ordre du Canada en 2024, mais elle consid\u00e8re que ses plus grandes r\u00e9alisations sont les plus petites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00ab\u2009Si une seule Tanzanienne ou un seul Tanzanien se souvient de ma contribution, j\u2019aurai l\u2019impression que c\u2019est un accomplissement tout aussi important\u2009\u00bb, d\u00e9clare-t-elle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>La version fran\u00e7aise suit la version anglaise.
