CIHR: ResearchNET and instructions |
As announced in Budget 2024, the scholarship and fellowship programs administered by the three federal research funding agencies – the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) – have been streamlined into a new harmonized talent program called the Canada Research Training Awards Suite (CRTAS), including the Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CPRA) program, that will open for applications in summer 2025.
The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship, CIHR Fellowship, NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship and SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship programs have been sunset and the 2024-25 competitions were the last.
The objective of the Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CPRA) program is to recognize and support the next generation of outstanding innovators, knowledge workers, creative thinkers and researchers at a pivotal time in their careers. The program provides funding and flexibility, empowering Canadian and international leaders in innovation and scholarship of tomorrow to develop the skills to build world-class research and drive Canadian prosperity and competitiveness. As part of the CRTAS commitment to increasing opportunities, there will be an increase of 220 awards at the postdoctoral level.
An overview of the program is included below. Please note a key change as it relates to the eligibility of international applicants. Interested applicants and their proposed supervisors should carefully review the complete program details. Additional agency-specific details and application instructions are anticipated on the websites in July 2025.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies has issued a memorandum on the various changes, as well as offering to answer questions related to applications and/or holding a CPRA with ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ as the host institution or for support for application development. FGS will host information sessions for applicants and interested supervisors in summer 2025. Relevant information can also be found in FGS’ Guide for Supervisors Supporting Applications for Externally-funded Postdoctoral Fellowships.
FGS Information Sessions
Of interest to potential applicants and supervisors, these sessions will include an overview of the new Canada Postdoctoral Research Award (CPRA) application process, a discussion of the evaluation criteria, and a Q & A portion.
