On Nov 23, 2022, Prof. Lina Brand Correa delivered a seminar research highlighting ecological economics as a more suitable economic paradigm for planetary health than mainstream neoclassical economics.
Over 32 attendees learned about how the ecological economic framework (vs. neoclassical economics) captures a more holistic perspective of the relationship between the economy, society and the environment, as it considers the economy embedded in society, which is in turn embedded in the environment. Ecological economics suggests that rather than trying to solve environmental issues through market mechanisms, it would be more beneficial to consider the value of planetary health for human life, societal wellbeing, and a thriving economy.
Prof. Brand Correa states, "in general there is not much questioning of the underlying economic structures or drivers that lead to environmental degradation, and that those underlying economic structures and drivers might well be driving negative population health outcomes as well.”
