The workshop, led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/gabrieljdusing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. <strong>Gabriel Dusing<\/strong><\/a>, brought together ten graduate students and researchers from the Dahdaleh Institute and the Global Strategy Lab for a deep dive into practical statistical techniques and causal inference methods used in global health research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2025\/05\/DI-Quant-Workshop-2-1024x473.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13863\" style=\"width:608px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2025\/05\/DI-Quant-Workshop-2-1024x473.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2025\/05\/DI-Quant-Workshop-2-300x139.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2025\/05\/DI-Quant-Workshop-2-1536x710.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2025\/05\/DI-Quant-Workshop-2.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Held in-person in the Institute\u2019s boardroom, the event was structured into two interactive sessions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Morning Session: Statistical Methods for Global Health<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants explored key inferential tools\u2014Chi-square tests, t-tests, ANOVA, nonparametric alternatives, and linear and logistic regression\u2014paired with live demonstrations in Stata. The focus was on practical application and interpretation, helping bridge theory with real-world research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2025\/05\/DI-Quant-Workshop-3-1024x473.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13862\" style=\"width:573px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2025\/05\/DI-Quant-Workshop-3-1024x473.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2025\/05\/DI-Quant-Workshop-3-300x139.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2025\/05\/DI-Quant-Workshop-3-1536x710.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2025\/05\/DI-Quant-Workshop-3.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Afternoon Session: Causal Inference in Observational Health Data<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Dusing guided attendees through concepts such as Propensity Score Matching (PSM), Inverse Probability Weighting (IPW), and regression adjustment using weights. With hands-on examples in Stata, participants were able to understand the application of advanced causal techniques to health data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshop stood out for its interactive format. Questions spanned basic theory to advanced application, reflecting the diverse experience levels in the room. A lunch break and a post-session Q&amp;A created space for deeper discussion, mentorship, and community building\u2014capped off with a relaxed social at Aroma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Dusing\u2014whose research leverages health administrative data to examine equity in health and health systems\u2014offered not just expertise but a welcoming, collegial approach that encouraged open exchange and critical thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This workshop clearly demonstrated a demand for more skill-sharing opportunities where students can sharpen their methodological toolkits and build community in a welcoming space.
