{"id":14603,"date":"2025-08-18T10:32:04","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T14:32:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/?p=14603"},"modified":"2025-08-18T10:32:06","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T14:32:06","slug":"world-cafe-exploring-climate-change-identity-and-belonging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/world-cafe-exploring-climate-change-identity-and-belonging\/","title":{"rendered":"World Caf\u00e9: Exploring Climate Change, Identity, and Belonging"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On July 10, 2025, the Wellness Impact Lab at the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research (DI), 快播视频, hosted a deeply moving World Caf\u00e9 event titled <em>\u201cNavigating Climate Change, Identity, and Belonging.\u201d<\/em> Led by <strong>Sara Ferwati<\/strong> (DI Community Fellow) and co-facilitated by <strong>Susan Harris <\/strong>(DI Community Fellow) and <strong>Sarah Merghani<\/strong> (DI Research Assistant), the gathering welcomed students from diverse backgrounds to explore how climate disruption intertwines with cultural memory, emotional well-being, and our evolving sense of home.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For immigrants, transnational individuals, and diasporic communities, landscapes are more than terrain\u2014they are repositories of memory, tradition, and identity. When these places are altered or lost to climate change, the sense of grief and disconnection can run deep. Yet, few spaces exist to process these emotional and cultural impacts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This World Caf\u00e9 was created to fill that void. Through a series of three themed dialogue rounds, it invited participants to journey through time and emotion:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Past \u2013 Memory and Cultural Connection:<\/strong> Participants reflected on the landscapes that shaped them\u2014ancestral lands, childhood spaces, and natural places interwoven with identity and heritage.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Present \u2013 Emotional Impact and Shared Experience:<\/strong> In the second round, participants explored how climate change is reshaping those cherished places, expressing feelings of grief, anxiety, and displacement.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Future \u2013 Collective Hope and Resilience:<\/strong> Finally, the conversation turned toward imagining ways to sustain cultural continuity, nurture resilience, and foster emotional healing in an uncertain future.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cThe stories we carry, and the landscapes we hold in our hearts, deserve space in climate conversations,\u201d<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>said Sara Ferwati.<strong> \u201c<\/strong><strong><em>This World Caf\u00e9 was an invitation to feel, remember, and imagine - together. What we saw was that shared vulnerability can transform fear into connection, and grief into collective strength.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The session created a grounded, reflective atmosphere, supported by gentle breathing exercises, emotion-mapping, and guided prompts. Participants described it as \u201csafe,\u201d \u201cuplifting,\u201d and \u201ctransformative.\u201d Many appreciated the opportunity to share openly, hear others' stories, and connect across differences in a space of empathy and care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highlights from participant feedback included a deep appreciation for emotional honesty and vulnerability, the power of storytelling to bridge diverse identities and a balance between structure and openness that encouraged authentic dialogue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suggestions for future sessions included incorporating cultural objects or images (\u201cshow-and-tell\u201d), allowing more time for unstructured conversation, and providing post-event reflection spaces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key insights from the event included:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Climate change is personal\u2014it touches memory, identity, and belonging\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Emotional storytelling can strengthen community bonds\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reflective spaces help cultivate hope and collective resilience.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants left with a renewed sense of connection, many offering one-word reflections like \u201clighter,\u201d \u201chopeful,\u201d and \u201cinspired.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For co-facilitator Sarah Merghani, the experience was deeply affirming: <strong><em>\u201cAs someone with a transnational identity - rooted in Sudan and shaped by Toronto - I often navigate multiple roles. This session gave space for all of those parts of me to coexist and breathe\u2026 One participant said they felt \u2018lighter\u2019 after sharing their story. That really stayed with me. We wanted people to feel seen and supported - and I believe we achieved that.\u201d<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a world increasingly shaped by climate disruption, events like this World Caf\u00e9 remind us of the vital role of care, culture, and community in imagining a hopeful future -
