{"id":3459,"date":"2021-05-12T16:52:28","date_gmt":"2021-05-12T20:52:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/?p=3459"},"modified":"2022-07-29T15:59:03","modified_gmt":"2022-07-29T19:59:03","slug":"opportunity-back-end-developer-swot-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/opportunity-back-end-developer-swot-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"Opportunity: Back-end Developer, Safe Water Optimization Tool Project"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Background<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.safeh2o.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Safe Water Optimization Tool<\/a>&nbsp;(SWOT) is an initiative of&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research<\/a>&nbsp;(DIGHR), in partnership with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.msf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M\u00e9decins sans Fronti\u00e8res<\/a>&nbsp;(MSF\/Doctors Without Borders), to build, refine, and scale a web-based data analytics platform that helps humanitarian field workers&nbsp;generate site-specific and evidence-based water chlorination targets.&nbsp;The&nbsp;SWOT tool&nbsp;is used&nbsp;around the world&nbsp;by humanitarian response agencies to ensure water is safe to drink and public health is protected during humanitarian crises.&nbsp;This&nbsp;Back-End&nbsp;Developer&nbsp;role&nbsp;will contribute&nbsp;to&nbsp;building new features and enhancing existing ones&nbsp;in the SWOT web tool&nbsp;to better meet field users\u2019 needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hours and Rate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Part-time up to 20 hours per week (occasionally&nbsp;up to&nbsp;37.5&nbsp;hours per week&nbsp;during sprints).&nbsp;<\/li><li>$33\/hour + 4% vacation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Duration of Position<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as possible&nbsp;to December 31<sup>st<\/sup>, 2021&nbsp;(extendable)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Areas of responsibility and tasks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Code and test&nbsp;back-end&nbsp;enhancements and updates to the SWOT web tool in collaboration with team of&nbsp;open-source&nbsp;developers&nbsp;under the guidance of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Lead Developer and&nbsp;Project&nbsp;Lead.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Manage and query back-end databases and build reports.&nbsp;<\/li><li>User accounts and database management.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Manage DevOps platform.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Update deployment pipeline and manage deployments.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Work effectively on project teams using agile development practices.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Create applications for extracting, transforming, and storing data from other APIs.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Regular reporting and update meetings with DIGHR supervisors.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Other development tasks as required.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Qualifications and experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bachelor\u2019s&nbsp;degree,&nbsp;or&nbsp;equivalent,&nbsp;in Computer Science or related field.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Some working or internship experience in a back-end developer capacity.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Core requirements:&nbsp;Node.js,&nbsp;Express, Postman,&nbsp;NoSQL&nbsp;databases.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Preferred qualifications:&nbsp;Azure&nbsp;Cloud,&nbsp;MongoDB,&nbsp;Git, Linux, agile\/scrum and test-driven development.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Prior experience with full stack web software development strongly preferred.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Additionally:<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Excellent communication skills: professional email\/phone correspondence, presentation proficiency.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds\/cultures.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Excellent computer skills (word processing, email, database management, spreadsheets).&nbsp;<\/li><li>Demonstrates an eagerness to learn and take on initiative.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Interested in developing tech for humanitarian applications.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Demonstrates organizational and time management skills.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Must be&nbsp;currently&nbsp;eligible to work in Canada&nbsp;(we are not able to assist with obtaining work permits,&nbsp;etc.).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working Conditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently the&nbsp;Institute is closed due to COVID-19 restrictions and all staff are working from home.&nbsp;Remote office hours are standard working hours (9 AM to 5 PM) in the Eastern Standard Time (EST) time zone.
