The other health concerns (in descending order) are as follows: Malaria>Respiratory problems>COVID-19.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Schistosomiasis is more prevalent during the rainy season and is detected by patients mostly at the chronic stage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hunger is more prevalent now than before as Cyclone Anna damaged rice crops, a main source of income in the basin. Fish yield have also not recovered as expected (every 3-4 years) despite the higher water levels in the lake.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hunger and clean water availability will become exacerbated on Chisi Island without government support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Model<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The model should integrate the multiple external factors influencing the health impacts on the basin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Climate perceptions will vary from stakeholder to stakeholder, and this should be considered in model development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The model must have practical utility for communities and policymakers and include metrics for reliability.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recommendations to policymakers must be different from those to communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Interventions<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Interventions should be sustainable, promote shared vision and drive shared action.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multifaceted interventions that amplify local government programs should be prioritized.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Priority should be given to devising interventions with short term benefits for communities in addition to mid-term and long-term benefits for policymakers. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Imperative to analyze feasibility of interventions before making recommendations to communities and policymakers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 5 \u2013 Stakeholder Workshop with Malawi government<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"819\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2022\/12\/MHICCM2022-Day-5-collage-1024x819.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2022\/12\/MHICCM2022-Day-5-collage-1024x819.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2022\/12\/MHICCM2022-Day-5-collage-300x240.png 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2022\/12\/MHICCM2022-Day-5-collage-1536x1229.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2022\/12\/MHICCM2022-Day-5-collage.png 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color\" style=\"color:#004a8d\"><em>Workshop held at the Mango lodge in Zomba<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Summary<\/em><\/strong><em>:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Water &amp; Sanitation, Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA), Department of Nutrition and HIV\/AIDS, MoH, (DNHA) attended the meeting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dr. Orbinski led the workshop and introduced the project to all stakeholders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The workshop was designed to understand the local needs around climate forecasting and adaptation, and to identify potential applications of the model at community and national levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Through presentations, Q&amp;A, and structured group discussions, stakeholders and researchers identified a set of key requirements for the model such as local evidence-based predictions, versatility, reliability (confidence levels of predictions), capacity-building (on-going training), sustainability (locally managed), utility as a planning and forecasting tool (setting targets, indicating extreme scenarios, identifying gaps in indicators).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Day 6: Workshop wrap-up, final deliverables, and future projection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Summary<\/em>: The final deliverables will be five publications, a high resolution hydrodynamic (flood) model, and an Agent-Based Model.
