  {"id":3611,"date":"2021-07-20T09:45:35","date_gmt":"2021-07-20T13:45:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/?post_type=project&#038;p=3611"},"modified":"2024-07-15T16:54:53","modified_gmt":"2024-07-15T20:54:53","slug":"evaluating-the-governance-of-emergent-pandemic-zoonoses","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/project\/evaluating-the-governance-of-emergent-pandemic-zoonoses\/","title":{"rendered":"Evaluating the Governance of Emergent Pandemic Zoonoses"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Actionable evidence focused on the regulation of wildlife trade, from which SARS and SARS-CoV-2 are believed to have emerged, is critical to prevent future pandemics.\u00a0Connecting social, legal, and cultural dynamics that affect the regulation of wildlife trade in countries where zoonotic epidemics (Ebola) and pandemics (SARS and SARS-CoV-2) have emerged is needed.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The purpose of this project is to evaluate the governance gap in stewardship of international wildlife trade and implications for food and health security. We take a multi-disciplinary,\u00a0multi-scale (global, national, local scales)\u00a0approach to analyze the intersection of global biodiversity, environmental, agricultural, and public health governance systems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Findings from this study will inform the development of a policy design and implementation toolkit for international organizations, as well as national and local stakeholders.\u200b\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Activities<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A solutions-oriented research approach incorporates\u00a0multiple\u00a0disciplinary lenses and methods to culminate in an integrative policy design and implementation plan, as follows:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Institutional and legal analysis will provide policy surveillance and mapping of international and national governance of stewardship for the wildlife trade;\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>A systems analysis will be used to identify context-specific\u00a0interdependencies\u00a0between\u00a0policies designed to prevent zoonosis,\u00a0local food systems\u00a0and communities,\u00a0supplemented by in-depth qualitative case studies in three countries (China, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Philippines); and\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Design thinking workshops that integrate and engage stakeholders in the development of actionable policy recommendations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"379\" class=\"wp-image-3626\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2021\/07\/Wildlife-project-Methodological-framework-1024x379.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2021\/07\/Wildlife-project-Methodological-framework-1024x379.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2021\/07\/Wildlife-project-Methodological-framework-300x111.png 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2021\/07\/Wildlife-project-Methodological-framework-1536x569.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/181\/2021\/07\/Wildlife-project-Methodological-framework-2048x759.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Team<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Lead<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Tarra L. Penney<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Dr. Penney is a population health scientist focused on the prevention of disease at the global level. She is an assistant professor of Global Food, Systems and Policy Evaluation, an investigator with the Global Strategy Lab and a member of the Dahdaleh institute for Global Health Research at 快播视频. She completed her Postdoctoral training and PhD in preventive medicine and epidemiology at the MRC Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge, UK. Working with national and international organizations, her research utilizes systems thinking and multiple methods to generate evaluative evidence to understand the context and impact of globalization and food systems on human and planetary health. Her work seeks to support evidence based global health policy development that can tackle some of our biggest global challenges including food insecurity, emergence of zoonoses, anti-microbial resistance and the related consequences of climate change.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. Mary Wiktorowicz<\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Mary Wiktorowicz is Professor of Global Health Governance and Policy in the School of Global Health at 快播视频 and\u00a0Associate Director of the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research. She served as Associate Dean, Community and Global in the Faculty of Health and chairs the committee guiding the development of the PhD in Global Health. Prof. Wiktorowicz\u00a0adopts a comparative lens to study global health governance.\u00a0As co-PI for the CIHR-funded\u00a0Global One Health Network, she leads a research-enabling platform on the global governance of infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and is a member of the WHO Collaborating Centre on the Global Governance of AMR. Her related research addresses the transnational governance of pharmaceuticals and wildlife trade regulation in preventing the emergence of zoonotic pandemics such as SARS-Cov-2.
