{"id":3617,"date":"2021-07-20T10:06:22","date_gmt":"2021-07-20T14:06:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/?post_type=project&#038;p=3617"},"modified":"2022-11-16T15:04:03","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T20:04:03","slug":"humanitarian-water-lab","status":"publish","type":"project","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/project\/humanitarian-water-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"Humanitarian Water Lab"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Humanitarian Water Lab&nbsp;find&nbsp;ways to get safe, healthy&nbsp;water to&nbsp;vulnerable&nbsp;people&nbsp;in humanitarian crises&nbsp;and resource-constrained settings&nbsp;around the world.&nbsp;We&nbsp;work&nbsp;with people&nbsp;affected by crises and frontline responders&nbsp;to&nbsp;identify&nbsp;critical gaps&nbsp;in knowledge and practice wherever water intersects with&nbsp;human&nbsp;health.&nbsp;We&nbsp;bring&nbsp;together people with the right kinds of expertise and experience&nbsp;to&nbsp;catalyze transdisciplinary research;&nbsp;design, test, and refine&nbsp;solutions, and&nbsp;translate research to&nbsp;change real-world practice, all with the aim of helping to improve health, well-being, and dignity of vulnerable people.&nbsp;The Lab has three core areas of activity:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Critical problem-solving research on pressing water and health&nbsp;challenges;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Training and professional development on&nbsp;water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH)&nbsp;in emergencies; and&nbsp;<\/li><li>Convening international events&nbsp;to advance the&nbsp;humanitarian water engineering research agenda.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selected Research Initiatives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Safe Water Optimization Tool: Advanced water quality data analytics for ensuring water safety and protecting public health in humanitarian emergencies:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.safeh2o.app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.safeh2o.app\/<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li>Chemical water quality and&nbsp;potential&nbsp;health effects&nbsp;for children with severe acute malnutrition:&nbsp;e.g.,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/f1000research.com\/posters\/8-603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/f1000research.com\/posters\/8-603<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><li>Sub-chronic health risks for vulnerable populations due to disinfection by-products in&nbsp;water systems in Canada and&nbsp;humanitarian&nbsp;and&nbsp;LMIC&nbsp;settings (new)&nbsp;<\/li><li>Linking water quality, microbiological indicators, and epidemiological data using machine learning&nbsp;to create predictive waterborne disease risk management tools&nbsp;(new)&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Selected&nbsp;Training &amp; Professional Development&nbsp;Initiatives<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Humanitarian Water Engineering Intensive Course:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/project\/hwe\/\">https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/dighr\/project\/hwe\/<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Selected&nbsp;Events&nbsp;Initiatives:<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Emergency Data Science\u2014Taking Advantage of the Data Flood&nbsp;2018:<\/em>&nbsp;An international&nbsp;workshop on building humanitarian decision-making tools in the age of big data:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/emergencydatascience.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/emergencydatascience.org\/<\/a><em><\/em>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><em>Is Humanitarian Water Safe?
