The undergrad program prepares graduates to teach trade skills in high schools across Ontario, helping address the growing need for technological education teachers.

快播视频 has stepped up to address the growing demand for qualified technological education teachers, an urgent need identified by the Ontario government.

Since 2017, the university鈥檚 faculty of education has offered the bachelor of education (B.Ed.) in technological education (tech ed) program in 10 broad-based areas, helping to fill the critical shortage that is expected to worsen if left unaddressed.

Passion meets purpose

The B.Ed technological education program equips graduates with the skills and knowledge to teach in high schools across the province. It鈥檚 also designed to encourage trade professionals to combine their passion for their sector with their desire to teach.

This approach is exactly what attracted Camille and Chadwin Bartley to the program. The couple, who have been partners in life and business for nearly two decades, started their post-secondary education for the first time in fall 2024.

鈥淢y decision to become an educator stems from a desire to nurture and encourage young minds to pursue their passions fearlessly. I believe teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the future, and I am eager to take on this responsibility,鈥 said Camille, who has been a hairstylist from the age of 16. She was also instrumental in inspiring Chadwin to pick up the clippers and learn the craft 15 years ago.

A key admission requirement, whether applying for the concurrent or consecutive program, the candidate must have work experience 鈥 along with industry licensing where applicable 鈥 in one of these areas: communication technology, computer technology, construction technology, green industries, hairstyling and aesthetics, health care, hospitality and tourism, manufacturing technology, technological design or transportation technology.

While the concurrent B.Ed. is offered to York students in a related degree program, the consecutive B.Ed. is open to those like Camille and Chadwin, who meet one of four eligibility criteria in a technology field aligned with the program.

Learning for impactful teaching

Having had the opportunity to work with local high schools and connect with school administrators who encouraged them to pursue teaching, the couple took the leap and joined York.

鈥淥ur teacher education will be impactful for students, and it鈥檒l be beneficial for our lives as well,鈥 said Chadwin.

He and Camille are already well-established in the industry, with a clientele that includes celebrities like Toronto Raptors player RJ Barrett. However, their passion is to promote barbering and hairstyling to youth as a skilled trade and a pathway to successful careers.

鈥淚 was in the music industry, managing artists, and I thought I could become Camille鈥檚 business manager. But it wasn鈥檛 practical, since she ended up working more than I did,鈥 recalled Chadwin. Wanting to be an equal partner in every sense, he decided to become a hairstylist, gaining hands-on experience in the beauty industry.

Chadwin became an apprentice with Camille鈥檚 employer and eventually became a licensed hairstylist and barber.

鈥淭he rest is history. I bought my first clippers for about $300 鈥 eleven months later, we opened up our first salon in downtown Brampton and we鈥檝e been working together ever since.鈥

In 2018, the couple launched a charitable organization called the Bartley Skills Development Program. Through the charity, they have taught youth across the Greater Toronto Area barbering and hairstyling.

鈥淲e started noticing that a lot of students are coming wanting to learn how to do hairdressing and barbering, but it wasn鈥檛 provided in their local high schools,鈥 noted Chadwin. 鈥淏ecause I became successful through the skilled trade, I鈥檓 now able to impart those skills to those who are interested in learning.鈥

Confidence in classroom teaching

Camille has a similar view.

鈥淲hen I鈥檓 speaking to students and I see a young person driven towards the beauty industry, it really excites me to pass on the knowledge that I have,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ecause I know how impactful it鈥檚 been in my life, and I know what it can do for someone that takes it seriously.鈥

For Camille and Chadwin, enrolling in the B.Ed technological education program is taking their community work to the next level, as formal teacher education will help them teach larger groups of students in a classroom setting with confidence.

鈥淭hough I know hairdressing 鈥 and I know it well 鈥 I need to learn the aspects of learning how to teach; that is, getting down to the level of a high school student and meeting them where they鈥檙e at. We needed this formal training to take the skills that we already have to the next level.鈥

They are excited about graduating next spring, crossing the convocation stage as their three young children watch their parents achieve what may be their greatest accomplishment yet.

Professional Learning in the Faculty of Education has introduced four new Technological Education Additional Qualification (AQ) courses and is merging classroom learning with on-site sector experience to address the shortage of high school teachers with these qualifications.

Technological Education encompasses 10 broad-based technologies with four of these in-demand courses being offered by 快播视频 as Additional Basic Qualifications (ABQs). Ontario teachers can now earn a new 鈥淭ech Ed鈥 qualification in the following areas with more planned for the near future: green industries; health care; hospitality and tourism; and hairstyling and aesthetics. These new Tech Ed AQ courses allow teachers to expand and extend their knowledge, so they can design and deliver programs to the next generation of talent for in-demand careers.

Anna Jupp

鈥淚f technological education teachers have trade or sector experience, such as nursing, these Additional Basic Qualification courses support them in translating their specialized knowledge and experience to classroom teaching and learning,鈥 says Anna Jupp, director, professional learning, Faculty of Education. 鈥淥ur courses are designed to help educators create student programs that not only meet Ontario curriculum expectations but inspire students to pursue careers in the skilled trades.鈥

The creation of the new courses results from a shortage of teachers who have the training and qualifications to teach these subjects, which has been a growing issue for years. Areas such as hospitality and tourism require specialized sites such as kitchen facilities, which can be a logistical and costly challenge for course providers. Accessing the latest technology is also a challenge, as teachers need to have access to tools and equipment in these areas to be trained in safely using the tools of the trade, so that students can also be taught.鈥

Typically, 125-hour AQ courses are structured in a fully online format, where candidates sign in at various times to complete their coursework. In contrast, these Tech Ed AQs offered Jupp and her team a new way to restructure the way educators learn in their chosen broad-based technology. While those enrolled may or may not have sector experience in their chosen field, the Tech Ed AQs are structured to account for 60 hours of traditional learning and 65 hours of experiential learning.

鈥淭here have been challenges in the last several years when it comes to technological education in high schools,鈥 Jupp explains. 鈥淲e鈥檝e seen a lot of technological education classrooms being dismantled. High schools had carpentry or mechanic shops and kitchens but because of low enrollment among students and a shortage of qualified teachers to teach these subjects, these classrooms were shut down.鈥濃

Both education and the government are preparing teachers and students for future jobs in the skilled trades, highlighting experiential education and technical skills. Jupp notes that the  recently announced that to obtain a secondary school diploma, students will require at least one technological education course to graduate, starting in September 2024.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 important that teachers be trained, so that students get excited about the trades and get the opportunity to explore them at the high school level,鈥 Jupp says. 鈥淭his way, students with an interest or talent in the trades can start thinking about this option for their post-secondary path.鈥

鈥淚n thinking about equity and different pathways, it鈥檚 important to provide not only options but opportunities for those who are university-bound and those considering a future in the skilled trades. In education, we鈥檝e been looking at ways to offer possibilities for both routes.鈥

The technological education additional qualification courses help to build the necessary skills, knowledge and expertise of teachers and feature a custom Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) platform. This offers users a balance of both flexibility and structure as the courses are a blend of online (both synchronous and asynchronous) and in-person learning. The 65-hour sector experience component is unique to York and to all technological education courses across Ontario.鈥

鈥淲e鈥檙e proud of our design,鈥 Jupp says. 鈥淲e included subject matter experts, such as teachers who hold both experience teaching these courses and experience working in their tech sector. The course developer for the health care course, for example, is both a health-care teacher and a former nurse, bringing with her a wealth of sector and teaching experience.鈥濃

Their Moodle LMS design 鈥渁llows for the initial development of a course,鈥 Jupp notes, 鈥渂ut also provides instructors with the opportunity to customize the course they鈥檙e teaching based on the needs of their students. We鈥檝e designed a course where instructors and candidates meet online synchronously once a week for five weeks. Online is preferred since candidates are participating from all over Ontario and attend these classes in the evenings. While facilitated by an instructor, these AQs allow for a highly collaborative environment.鈥濃

After the class, candidates complete Moodle assignments or activities which reflect the topic of the evening and connect back to the classroom. Within their chosen sector, candidates job shadow to earn their 65 hours of sector experience in a placement through the approval of their instructional leader.鈥

Jupp sees the hands-on learning element in technological education courses as key. 鈥淪ome providers in the province offer similar courses but went the fully online route, which I think leaves a gap,鈥 Jupp says. 鈥淓ducators need hands-on experience of knowing how to use the tools and equipment such as properly sanitizing hairdressing tools. They need to know how to effectively transfer this knowledge in a classroom setting.鈥濃

The Office of Professional Learning in the Faculty of Education has been offering AQ courses to Ontario educators since the mid-鈥90s and are proud to now offer over 100 additional qualifications. These technological education courses and their innovative format are their latest development. Jupp and her team say they are looking forward to always finding new ways to offer their high-quality, in-demand courses in ways that bring the best learning experience to educators possible. 鈥
