Ippolito has led research on how to keep the lines of communication open between children and their parents.<\/p>\n<p>Some of his tips for parents are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Encourage kids to be inquisitive, share their questions and observations, and meet them where they are in their learning, instead of where you think they should be.<\/li>\n<li>Remind them that they have time to catch up on their school assignments or homework.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage children to explore non-school projects.<\/li>\n<li>Allow kids to keep in touch with their friends online.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_274191\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-274191\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2020\/03\/Tina_Rapke.jpg?x54714\" alt=\"Tina Rapke\" width=\"235\" height=\"300\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-274191\"><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-274191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tina Rapke<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/edu.yorku.ca\/edu-profiles\/index.php?mid=1183226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tina Rapke<\/a>&nbsp;is an associate professor in the Faculty of Education who teaches mathematics education courses to current and prospective teachers. Rapke has conducted extensive research on strategies to enhance the learning and teaching of mathematics, and also leads a program in a GTA-based school to address parental concerns about math education and develop practical strategies to help students learn basic arithmetic.<\/p>\n<p>Her tips for parents are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Slow down and enjoy time with their children, and connect with them by listening.<\/li>\n<li>Play board games and write stories together.<\/li>\n<li>Play short math games and do mental math together.
