YU Eats is proud to announce its partnership with on campus to provide sustainable produce to its customers. This partnership is a result of YU Eats' commitment to promoting healthy and environmentally-friendly food options.

Vision Greens was founded in 2019 in Welland, Ontario and was the first vertical farm to grow leafy greens. Vertical farming is a method that allows for the cultivation of crops in vertically-stacked layers using minimal water and energy. This innovative farming technique not only ensures a steady supply of fresh produce but also mitigates the negative environmental impacts of traditional farming methods. In addition to promoting sustainability, this partnership means that YU Eats customers will have access to the freshest and healthiest produce possible, further enhancing the dining experience.

Benefits of Vision Greens’ vertical farming:

  • Locally Grown in Ontario, certified Non-GMO and Foodland organic
  • Pesticide, herbicide and fungicide free.
  • 96% less land usage (2,000 sq ft of vertical farming is equivalent to 12.5 acres of farmland).
  • 96% less water usage than a typical crop farm. Water is filtered and recycled for reuse.
  • 92% less food kilometres travelled, making the greens more nutrient dense and sustainable than the average greens imported into Canada.
  • 70% lower greenhouse gas emissions than traditional farms

Vision Greens is currently available at Glendon campus with exciting plans to expand offerings further.

Resident Registered Dietitian Dahlia Abou El Hassan brings learning to life with Teaching Kitchen - a kind of cooking class that combines culinary instruction using healthful whole ingredients, nutrition education, mindfulness, and addresses food insecurity with students in mind.

Working with the Executive Chef Sergio Onorati, a series of cooking classes will have students cooking up various recipes that they can easily execute and will be offered at both Glendon and Keele campuses. With Chef leading students on the method and technical skills of cooking, Dietician Dahlia enriches the experience by educating students on nutritional facts of the recipe and offering ingredient alternatives for those with restrictions and intolerances with the aim of improving wellness through food.

The first series saw students make their dollar go a little further with lentil tacos and cilantro lime slaw. The cooking classes are free to students and all equipment and ingredients are provided to create the dish.

Each series will introduce students to new recipes. Registered Dietician Dahlia believes “this initiative was launched to help address the United Nations’ sustainable development goals. It helps us increase food literacy and empower students to make nutritious and affordable recipes in a hands-on environment.”

Students are already raving about their experience. “The dietitian was so enthusiastic and energetic, it was amazing to feel how caring and passionate she is. The chef was so knowledgeable and kind… I felt very welcomed… I liked the emphasis on safety and health! The atmosphere was relaxing, but I also felt like I was gaining important life skills like cooking and nutrition knowledge.”

The next Teaching Kitchen takes place on March 9, 2023 in Stong Dining Hall and March 15th at Glendon Marche and will feature Middle Eastern Taboule Salad. Seats are limited so register early. Stay tuned for new dates and recipes.

The Orange Snail - Albert

Albert and his Bain family business - Orange Snail – have been part of the 첥Ƶ fabric for 18 years. Their story is one of hope, opportunity and betting on yourself.

The Bain family moved to Toronto and started a local restaurant in 2002. Three years later,  Stong College identified the need to bring a diverse and inclusive menu to the York community, and Albert's family was up for the challenge. They invested their family's life savings into upgrading kitchen equipment to bring various cuisines from many cultural backgrounds. It was a success. For many years, Orange Snail has thrived as a student, faculty and staff favourite. Many come for the restaurant’s quality service and a vibrant menu and stay as loyal customers due to the Bain family’s kindness and delicious food. Albert and his family welcome everyone to visit and enjoy their freshly made home-cooked meals.

Albert's tip for success?

"Love yourself! I love myself, and I believe in myself.”

— Albert

YU Eats - Altash

Altash started working in Central Square Cafeteria in 2013. She was hired within one day after she passed by CSQ, saw the job opportunity and spoke to the manager. Altash’s favourite part about working at 첥Ƶ is the people – she enjoys chatting with students and community members about their daily lives and answering questions while delivering delicious meals. She also loves being part of an inclusive environment, which makes her feel safe during her day and night shifts.

Altash's secret to happiness?

"Be happy and live your life the way you want to live.”
