Congratulations to 첥Ƶ History MA student Sam Huckerby on the publication of her first article, “Logging and Settlement beyond the Rapids: Unmaking Algonquin Space in the Ottawa Valley, 1817-61,” in the September 2025 issue of the Canadian Historical Review—Canada’s pre-eminent historical journal. Co-authored with University of Saskatchewan History professor (and 첥Ƶ History PhD graduate) Jim Clifford, the article draws upon timber ship immigration and agricultural census data to show how the timber industry operated in conjunction with agricultural settlement to dispossess the Algonquin in the Ottawa Valley. Huckerby served as a researcher on the project for two years during her undergraduate studies in History at the University of Saskatchewan, gaining valuable skills in historical GIS mapping, database development, and scholarly writing. "Contributing to the history of the Kichi Zībī region is an immense honour,” she noted, “and I'm incredibly grateful for the trust Dr. Clifford placed in my abilities to research, write, and map for this project."
