Over the past few years, the community of scholars and learners at 快播视频\u2019s School of Nursing within the Faculty of Health have heard the call and are starting to do the work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to better align the school of nursing with the Truth and Reconciliation calls to action,\u201d explains Kate Dunn, Assistant Professor and an Anishnaabe scholar at the School of Nursing within the Faculty of Health. \u201cThe challenge is how to do this respectfully, tactfully and carefully, while maintaining requirements of the accrediting bodies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:21px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2024\/11\/Kate-Dunn-1-edited-1.png\" alt=\"Kate Dunn\" class=\"wp-image-18143\" style=\"width:415px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2024\/11\/Kate-Dunn-1-edited-1.png 1080w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2024\/11\/Kate-Dunn-1-edited-1-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2024\/11\/Kate-Dunn-1-edited-1-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/health\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/30\/2024\/11\/Kate-Dunn-1-edited-1-391x260.png 391w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><sup>Kate Dunn<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Dunn, who has worked on liver wellness and hepatitis C elimination in Indigenous communities, is a new appointment, who, in January, will teach <em>Introduction to<\/em> <em>Social Justice and Advocacy in Nursing Practice<\/em>. This is a second-year course in the process of being revised to come closer to meeting the central call in Action #24\u2014a mandatory course in \u201cAboriginal health issues\u201d including the history and legacy of residential schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn\u2019t the only course at the School of Nursing that acknowledges the history of settler colonialism in Canada. Associate Professor Archana Paul says that, in her second-year course, <em>Mental Health Across the Lifespan<\/em>, the first two weeks are focused on the history of Indigenous people being harmed by institutions (including psychiatry), stigma as a source of discrimination, as well as trauma-informed care. Paul, who received the 2024 Council of Ontario University Programs in Nursing (COUPN) Award for excellence in teaching earlier this year, takes care to ensure the conversation is threaded throughout the rest of the course, with a goal to help future nurses become better patient advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vanesa S., a BScN Nursing student, says that Paul\u2019s use of real-life examples of people harmed by the healthcare system, such as Brian Sinclair, who, in 2008, died in the waiting room of a Winnipeg hospital after not being seen for 34 hours, had a big impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a case I wasn\u2019t aware of and it really made me resolve to be sure to have my own reflective practice and check my own bias,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also inspired her to research the systems in which medical trauma has been\u2014and still is\u2014inflicted on Indigenous people, such as pregnant women who are forced to leave remote communities to give birth, even when they are low-risk. Vanessa adds: \u201cWith everything that\u2019s happened with the forced sterilizations and forced birth evacuations, it\u2019s so important to be mindful not to retraumatize patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:17px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<i class=\"fas fa-quote-left h1 text-primary\"><\/i>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><em>\u201cSupporting the calls that Indigenous communities continually ask for involves, not only learning about the historical and contemporary issues, but also has to have a connection with activism.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:1em\">\u2014 Associate Professor Ruth Rodney<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:17px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"small\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>Health and Healing: Global Context of Nursing, <\/em>a fourth-year class with three sections taught by three different educators, Ruth Rodney, Ivona Mostarac and Sandra Peniston, their shared goal is to delve into the history and current reality in a way that doesn\u2019t tokenize the subject matter and takes exercises beyond merely performative gestures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to land acknowledgements, for example, Rodney asks students to reflect on them in various ways by bringing in resources such as the \u201cAlternative Campus,\u201d a Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change project that invites people to think critically about the land York is situated on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that, if we are really serious about it, there always has to be an action component,\u201d says Rodney. \u201cSupporting the calls that Indigenous communities continually ask for involves, not only learning about the historical and contemporary issues, but also has to have a connection with activism.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Sandra Peniston challenges her students to consider the role nursing has played in settler colonialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe, as nurses, we were there in those residential schools, we were part of this,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ve kind of whitewashed our nursing history but, whether it was in Canada, the United Kingdom or across Africa, we shaped colonialism as well. We need to own that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students enrolled in <em>The Canadian Health Care System<\/em>\u2014a third-year course taught by Mohammed Anwar Majid that examines residential schools, trauma and violence against women, including the national inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls\u2014are also encouraged to take action with an exercise that sees them write letters to the Minister of Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy expectation was for students to provide some general recommendation but, instead, students have committed themselves to continuously exploring Indigenous history and culture, volunteering with Indigenous elders and knowledge keepers and advocating for Indigenous rights,\u201d says Majid. \u201cI am humbled to be in the presence of these future leaders and they are helping me become a better person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often as not, students seem to be ahead of the curve when it comes to wanting more Indigenous content. We need to continue to talk about cultural genocide and to understand the legacy of colonialism. And then we need to say, \u2018Okay, now what?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome students are afraid to research within Indigenous populations because Indigenous populations have been harmed by researchers,\u201d Campbell adds. \u201cBut now we have to look at some ways that we can work with and collaborate with these groups.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Associate Professor Lisa Seto Nielsen, who teaches a different section of <em>Qualitative Research Methods<\/em>, says it\u2019s important to avoid burdening Indigenous colleagues by asking them to be responsible for educating settlers. \u201cA colleague pointed out that the work of decolonizing isn\u2019t the work of Indigenous academics and scholars in the community,\u201d Nielsen notes. \u201cIt's really <em>our<\/em> job to decolonize.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we\u2019re only just getting started on the hard work, says Kate Dunn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s pressure to do things quickly, of course, but it\u2019s been 150 years of colonizing education and you can\u2019t just decolonize and re-indigenize in a few months,\u201d she points out. \u201cIt\u2019s a big process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the greater conversation might even be, \u2018How do we all take part in this process?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
