Honours Degree Overview: Four Years

The broadly interdisciplinary approach taken at the Law and Society program opens legal studies up to a wide range of explorations , honing your research and analytical skills , no matter which kind of profession you wish to pursue after graduation. You will become part of one of the largest and oldest prgrams of its kind in North America and give yourself a solid foundation in the liberal arts to propel yourself into your future career .

Year 1

First year will introduce you to the university environment, provide you with education courses and allow options for you to study courses aligned your own interests.

  • Law and Society Studies Courses: Introduction to Socio-Legal Studies SOSC 1375 3.0 Fall or Winter ( Major Course)
  • General Education Courses: Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Elective Courses: Your choice of courses outside of Law and Society

Year 2

In your second year, you will continue your development of the fundamentals in Law and Society

  • Law and Society Courses: You will investigate the core concepts involved in Law and Society course SOSC 2350 6.0 ( Major Course) . Must achieve C+ to continue
  • General Education Courses: Natural Science (for non-Science students)
  • Elective Courses: Choose new subjects to explore or continue to develop skills from previous selections

Year 3

Your third year in Law and Society will allow you to explore specific interests in the field

  • Law and Society Course Options: SOSC 3360 3.0 Canadian Charter of Rights, SOSC 3361 6.0 Disability and Law, SOSC 3370 6.0 Social Justice and Law, SOSC 3365 6.0 Privacy and the Law + many more
  • Elective Courses: Choose new subjects to explore or continue to develop skills from previous selections

Year 4

In your fourth and final year, your courses in Law and Society will be designed to meet your specific interests

  • Law and Society Course Options: SOSC 4350 6.0 Law and Society Seminar, SOSC 4351 6.0 Indigenous Peoples & Law, SOSC 4358 6.0 Law and Sexuality , SOSC 4352 6.0 Social Dimensions of Criminal Law, + many more
  • Elective Courses: These courses can include additional Law and Society courses or further courses of interest at the upper level

Program Options

Gain an understanding of the law in its broader social cultural context and the ability to analyze issues from many perspectives.

Acquire sought-after skills, including research, communication, critical thinking and problem solving.

Develop the ability to debate, persuade, mediate and present your thoughts and opinions to others, as well as the capacity to recognize and incorporate other potential solutions or applications to given problems.
