Eligibility: You must be eligible for work-study or international work-study to work within the Faculty of LA&PS. Please review the for domestic students and international students to verify your status.
Number of Positions Available: 4 Summer Term positions; 4 Fall/Winter Term positions
Type of Position: Paid
Rate of Pay: $18.00 per hour
Employment Term: Summer: May 4- September 4, 2026; Fall/Winter: September 8, 2026- April 30, 2027
Total Weekly Hours of Work: Summer: up to 34 hours per week; Fall/Winter: up to 15 hours per week


Purpose:

The McLaughlin College First Year Experience Mentor is responsible for supporting the First Year Experience program in McLaughlin College, including the design and delivery of programming that support first-year students in their transition to university, foster engagement and community, and promote academic, personal, and professional development. This includes assisting with the planning and execution of events, orientation, mentorship and outreach initiatives, and collaborating with campus partners on special projects.


Duties:

  1. Support in the planning and delivery of programs that support first-year student transition, engagement, community building, and academic, personal, and professional development.
  2. Assist in the coordination and implementation of small- and large-scale events, including orientation, mentorship, and outreach initiatives.
  3. Engage with students and members of the York community, representing LA&PS Colleges across College spaces and campus activities.
  4. Contribute to the development and delivery of specialized projects and pilot initiatives that respond to the needs of LA&PS students.
  5. Collaborate with SECs, LA&PS staff, and student staff teams to support program delivery, including initiatives such as the Peer Mentor Program and Advancing YU.
  6. Assist with the collection and use of feedback to support the evaluation and continuous improvement of programming.
  7. Provide administrative support, including maintaining accurate records, updating documents, and organizing shared resources.
  8. Monitor and respond to communications (e.g., email and Microsoft Teams) in a timely and professional manner.
  9. Attend and actively participate in required meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
  10. Perform additional duties as required.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated understanding of effective strategies for academic, personal, and professional success in a post-secondary environment.
  • Strong knowledge of 快播视频, including campus services and resources.
  • Experience liaising with campus partners (e.g., Learning Skills Services, Career Centre, LA&PS Academic Advising).
  • Experience using project management and collaboration tools (e.g., MS Teams, Notion, Trello).
  • Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the diverse academic support needs of students.
  • Ability to support students in a professional and confidential manner.
  • Demonstrated commitment to peer support and student success.
  • Proven leadership skills, with a high level of initiative and engagement in both independent and team-based work.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Experience or interest in marketing, communications, or graphic design is considered an asset.
  • Strong attention to detail, with well-developed organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate student at 快播视频.
  • In good academic standing.
  • Demonstrated experience in peer mentoring, student support, or related roles in a post-secondary environment (university experience preferred).
  • Demonstrated initiative and a willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of 快播视频 services and resources available to students.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence, adaptability, and sound organizational and teamwork skills.
  • Approachable, reliable, and committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive student environment.
