One-to-One Appointments 

During remediation, the Writing Centre has multiple instructors (remote and in-person) available 6 days a week for you to book with! You can work with a trained writing specialist on a specific assignment or just to improve your writing!  

Our Summer Term schedule starts May 21 and will continue through the SU term. We encourage you all to continue booking your 50-minute sessions and fully benefit from the expertise of our instructors.

Academic Accommodations 

During remediation, accessibility specialists for students with academic accommodation continue to be available. Students registered with Accessibility Services should contact James Roberston at jroberts@yorku.ca for placement with an instructor.

Drop-In Sessions 

Drop-In is once again available remotely from Monday to Friday, 1 鈥� 3 p.m.. These concise 15-minute appointments are perfect for short reviews and any questions you may have.聽聽

Drop-In will continue during the Summer Term that begins on May 21. Updates will be posted on the Drop-In page, and you are also welcome to direct any questions you have to the front desk at lapswrit@yorku.ca.

Professor Allen recently completed her doctorate at Ohio State University, specializing in Rhetoric, Composition, and Literacy (RCL). Prior to that she achieved an MA in Digital Rhetoric and Professional Writing from Michigan State University, a qualification that makes her an especially good choice for those needing help with modern business and professional writing. As she pursued her PhD and Masters, she鈥檚 also gathered private sector experience, most notably at Yahoo, where she was able to apply her knowledge of language and composition. Whether it is a social media campaign or a traditional academic essay, there are few kinds of writing Dr. Allen is not already familiar with.

Her current research involves the role of digital media in the planning and sustenance of Black Family Reunions. Although like most she prefers her hobbies which include reading non-fiction books and getting involved in the community!

The Writing Centre prides itself on being a welcome and open space for students to come and receive the help and support they may need in their academic pursuits; in other words, it鈥檚 another community where she鈥檚 joyfully able to offer her aid.

It is such a pleasure to be able to work with students who book appointments at the Writing Centre, because it鈥檚 a different perspective than being in the classroom as a lecturer or as a professor,鈥� explains Professor Allen.

On another note, if you can鈥檛 attend the pop-up days, don鈥檛 worry! Our one-to-one programming is available all year around鈥攆or the fall, winter, and summer terms. There鈥檚 also regularly scheduled drop-in help that鈥檚 virtually accessible on our website.

We also want students to know that we are on the 3^rd Floor South Ross, and to make use of our teaching, said Sufrin. So the Pop-up is a quick way to get students to give us a try, and then hopefully register for a full session.

So come on by and visit the drop-in pop-ups! Students can drop-in anytime from 11 AM 鈥� 3 PM on Monday, November 13 at the East Bear Pit. It鈥檚 a great way to get some extra help on any assignment you鈥檙e working on!

A workshop to help students in completing their graduate studies!

As James Robertson, Writing Coordinator, puts it, 

Drop-in is a quick and easy way to get answers to short questions that can be handled in approximately 15 minutes. It is in addition a helpful adjunct to Writing Centre appointments that occur every week that you may make use of.鈥� 

Receive feedback specific to you and your assignments, so you can be confident in your submission. You can even ask about complex grammar practices and genre-specific phrases to help you in the future! 

The goal is for the event to feel light, fun and overall supportive of students in their exam experience, says Fenech. It鈥檚 been challenging year for students returning to in-person learning and we know most of them are feeling burnt out as the year winds down, so we want to provide an event for them to simply enjoy themselves and see that there are folks from all across campus looking out for their success and wellbeing.

So come on down to the LA&PS Exam Jam! Students can drop by any time from 11am 鈥� 4pm on April 5 to get extra help鈥攚hether it鈥檚 academically, socially, or mentally鈥� during this stressful end of the year season!

On a similar note, Professor. Morris feels inspired working with students because he received support from many educators during his studies.

I鈥檝e been fortunate to have had several mentors in my own education, from grade school to graduate school, noted Professor Morris. My father is a primary school teacher, for example. They helped me to see that learning, reading, and writing are noble pursuits and essential skills that I try to impart to others.

As mentioned by Professor Morris, one of the reasons why he chose to work at York was because this university makes sure everyone feels supported.

York is a leading research institution that provides ample support for students, faculty, and staff, he stated. York also has a dedicated Writing Department that takes writing seriously and understands the importance of writing in education, business, and social change.

In addition, the writer-editor collaboration ensures that the writers are supported in the publication process. That was the conclusion of Nicholas Mohammed who was published in 滨苍惫别苍迟颈辞鈥檚 Fall 2022 1.2 release.

The Inventio staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient, said Mohammed. I am appreciative of the care they took. They made me feel heard and comfortable throughout the entire editing process. Writing can make us feel vulnerable or overwhelmed and the Inventio staff was more than accommodating.
