York places first for Quality Education and second for Gender Equality, Reduced Inequities and Responsible Consumption and Production in Canada

TORONTO, June 18, 2025 鈥 In today鈥檚 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings results, 快播视频 continues to lead in the world鈥檚 top Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), holding firm with a top 40 spot overall and jumping hundreds of spots in SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. The significant new global ranking comes alongside York鈥檚 deepening academic strength in health studies, and as the University鈥檚 new School of Medicine takes shape.

York holds strong at 38th out of 2,318 institutions worldwide, and 7th in Canada, despite more than 350 additional institutions participating this year. The THE Impact Rankings highlight how the University is making significant changes not only on its three main Greater Toronto Area campuses and in surrounding local communities, but also on the global stage.

鈥淵ork has once again been recognized as a leader by Times Higher Education鈥檚 Impact Ranking for advancing the SDGs,鈥 said Rhonda Lenton, 快播视频 president and vice-chancellor. 鈥淚鈥檓 particularly proud to see the major jump we have made in SDG 3: Good Health and Wellbeing. This aligns with our focus on advancing health in our own communities and those we serve. The recent approval of York鈥檚 School of Medicine is a testament to this commitment and to our dedication to ensure that all families have access to equitable health care here in Ontario. My warmest thanks and congratulations to everyone who advances the SDGs every day here at York, and beyond.鈥

In Canada, York is number one for SDG 4: Quality education, and second for SDG 5: Gender equality, SDG 10: Reduced inequities and SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production. The University scored in the top 10 across the country for 12 out of 17 SDGs.

Sustainability is an important pillar at 快播视频. Its renewed Sustainability Strategy articulates a bold vision for achieving climate targets and environmentally sound practices while its Academic Plan embeds SDGs directly into research, teaching and partnerships.

As part of THE Impact Rankings, the University did particularly well in social justice and action SDGs, including SDGs 1: No poverty; 3: Good health and well-being; 10: Reduced inequalities; 12: Responsible consumption and production; 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions; 9: Industry, innovation and infrastructure; and 17: Partnership for the goals.

York is supporting good health and well-being by opening a new School of Medicine to help address the urgent need for more primary care physicians in Ontario. In addition, York is one of only four post-secondary institutions in the province to receive new funding from the Ontario government to launch of an accelerated registered nursing degree program to help get nurses into the workforce sooner.

In addition, as academic lead of the  and through its new Organized Research Unit, OneWATER, the University is helping to develop equitable and integrated solutions to water issues facing many communities worldwide. The UNITAR Global Water Academy and 快播视频 recently announced the launch of three, free online courses: , , and .

York was recently named the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) Hub Chair for SDG 10 out of 1,700-plus UNAI members in recognition of its commitment to addressing systemic inequality, discrimination and exclusion across the University鈥檚 operations, teaching, research and outreach.

York is working to reduce inequality through its support of Indigenous research, the Centre for Refugee Studies, and through the .

The University has international partners in Costa Rica, Ghana and the Philippines ready to work with York Emergency Mitigation, Engagement, Response and Governance Institute (Y-MERGE), York鈥檚 Las Nubes campus in Costa Rica, the Centre for Refugee Studies, the and the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research.

The University also helps address poverty and inequality through initiatives such as the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness . In addition, 's Parkdale Community Legal Services program and Community Legal Aid Services provide legal assistance to lower income Toronto area residents.

The University鈥檚 values of social justice, progressiveness, inclusivity, sustainability and excellence are infused into its Decolonizing, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion StrategyFramework and Action Plan on Black Inclusion, and the , including the establishment of a dedicated Indigenous Research Ethics Board at York 鈥 the first for a post-secondary institution in Canada. 

With more than 350 global partnerships in 60 plus countries, it鈥檚 no wonder York jumped 11 spots in SDG 16: Peace, justice and strong institutions. Most recently the University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Both institutions have strong foundations in research and knowledge mobilization that helps protect the environment and support their surrounding communities.

In support of industry, innovation and infrastructure and sustainable cities and communities, York continues to promote and support innovation and entrepreneurship, fintech and AI in York Region where it recently opened its new Markham Campus.

Through its Disaster and Emergency Management program, York鈥檚 new state-of-the-art Victor Phillip Dahdaleh Advanced Disaster, Emergency and Rapid Response Simulation (ADERSIM) Lab and Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), and its Understanding and Improving Wildfire Mitigation Partnerships with Local Governments project,the University is helping to increase the sustainability cities and communities. The EOC can manage, coordinate and act as a hub to support large-scale emergency operations and evaluate rapid emergence response strategies across Canada and around the world. The ADERSIM Lab will develop emergency management tools and technologies, train students and industry partners, while the wildfire project will allow the University and its partners to evaluate the issues local governments face in adopting wildfire mitigation practices and determine how to scale up their mitigation efforts.

Further highlighting York鈥檚 work in diversity and sustainability across its multiple campuses, the University was once again named one of Canada鈥檚 Greenest Employers in 2025鈥痜or the 13th consecutive year and one of Canada鈥檚 Best Diversity Employers 2025. TORONTO, June 12, 2024 鈥 快播视频 champions sustainability and actively makes positive changes in local and global communities through its work on the United Nations鈥 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Today鈥檚 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings announcement recognizes that work as York jumped five places to rank 35th in the world. 

York鈥檚 overall ranking increased despite stiffer competition than last year with about 2,100 participating universities 鈥 approximately 300 more universities than previously. York also shot up 19 spots for zero poverty (SDG 1) to number two in the world and number one in Canada, and ranked number one in Canada for reduced inequalities (SDG 10).  

THE Impact Rankings assesses universities around the world against the UN SDGs in research, stewardship, outreach and teaching.聽聽

鈥淭his is a University-wide achievement by our students, staff and faculty to demonstrably make a positive impact to the sustainable development goals through research, teaching, creativity and innovation,鈥 says Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor of 快播视频. 鈥淲e have done particularly well in SDGs that align most strongly with our values as a University, including zero poverty, reduced inequalities, and sustainable cities and communities. I am proud that we continue to be recognized for our leadership in building a more sustainable and inclusive world.鈥 

York also ranked 13th for sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11) and has moved up more than 30 spots to 35th in the world for SDG 17, local and global partnerships. The University鈥檚 dedication to advancing SDGs is embedded in its鈥University Academic Plan 2020-2025.鈥疘n addition, York placed in the top 50 worldwide for gender equality (SDG 5), responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), and peace justice and strong institutions (SDG 16). 

The University supports reduced poverty through its 's Parkdale Community Legal Services program, established in 1971, and Community Legal Aid Services, both of which provide legal assistance to lower income Toronto area residents. In addition, York hosts the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness

By providing $1 million in support of Indigenous research and working with refugees at the Centre for Refugee Studies for more than 35 years, York is working to reduce inequality. Some 16,000 of York鈥檚 students are the first in their family to attend university. York鈥檚 extensive network of partners and commitment to community-centred research have helped make possible a new Markham Campus 鈥 opening this fall in the heart of one of the most diverse and dynamic urban communities in the province 鈥 and a new, first-of-its kind School of Medicine to train primary care physicians. The University intends to offer a two-year bridging pathway for students who may not have considered a career in medicine or health to enhance access, equality and diversity within the health professions, as well as health equity for the people of Ontario. 

Partnering with more than 50 organizations, including Queen鈥檚 University, industries, hospitals, governments and community partners, Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society will help tackle the risks of breakthroughs in technology to vulnerable populations while promoting social health and justice for all, especially Indigenous Peoples in Canada. York received a record $318-million in funding for鈥痶he Connected Minds program.

Community commitment to sustainability underpins top 40 global ranking

快播视频 continues to strengthen its position as a leader in creating a more sustainable and inclusive world, ranking among the world鈥檚 top 40 universities for advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as revealed today in the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.

This year鈥檚 Impact Rankings include tougher competition with more submissions, bringing the total number of ranked universities to more than 1,500. York has demonstrated strong global standing in the following categories:

  • SDG 1 鈥 No Poverty (21st in the world)
  • SDG 10 鈥 Reduced Inequalities (25th in the world)
  • SDG 11 鈥 Sustainable Cities and Communities (12th in the world)

鈥淎s a leader in creating positive change, York has once again been recognized by THE 2023 World Impact Ranking for advancing the UN SDGs,鈥 said Rhonda Lenton, president and vice-chancellor. 鈥淏eing among the top 40 universities globally is a testament to the high quality, interdisciplinary work taking place at York bridging community members across faculties and divisions united by a commitment to make the world a better place for all. I congratulate our entire community and the many outstanding partners with whom we collaborate on this tremendous accomplishment.鈥

The Impact Rankings were announced as York is host to the 2023 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, Canada鈥檚 largest annual gathering of academics. The conference theme, 鈥淩eckonings and Re-imaginings,鈥 serves to highlight many of the inequities and challenges the SDGs aim to address.

The rankings news also comes on the heels of the announcement of the largest research grant in the University鈥檚 history which underpins a total of $318-million funding for Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society. The interdisciplinary Connected Minds team will focus on how society can evolve in a socially responsible way with artificial intelligence and disruptive technologies.

鈥淚鈥檓 grateful that members of the York community have taken up our University Academic Plan鈥檚 challenge to deepen our contributions to the SDGs with such enthusiasm and dedication,鈥 said Provost and Vice President Academic Lisa Philipps. 鈥淎ddressing inequality and fostering sustainable communities locally and globally are massive challenges that require all of us to act. Since its founding, York has been a university committed to improving access to post-secondary education, and today, more than 11,000 York students are first in their family to attend university. York also provides a broad array of financial supports to our students including the provides financial support for up to 60 qualified undergraduate students who overcome barriers to earn their degree or who have helped others by contributing to the SDGs. 聽聽聽

Home to the , York鈥檚 numerous initiatives toward No Poverty are reflected by a strong standing in SDG 1. York鈥檚 ranking in SDG 10 toward Reduced Inequalities encompasses a wide range of initiatives that demonstrate leadership both at home and around the world, including the recently launched聽Decolonizing, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (DEDI) Strategy, the first such plan to incorporate decolonization in a meaningful way.聽

York鈥檚 recognized strength in water research is helping to define the University鈥檚 contributions to many SDGs, including SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. In March 2023, York was named academic lead in the UN鈥檚 new global Water Academy, which focuses on delivering innovative training and building human capacities on pressing water-related issues worldwide.

OneWATER, York's Organized Research Unit, is dedicated to research and discovery of strategic, integrated solutions to water challenges faced by communities in Canada and around the world. Led by an accomplished executive team, the researchers also have a key role in the delivery of the UN Water Academy. York researchers are also supporting humanitarian field workers in refugee camps with new tools that help ensure refugees can access clean water.

While much of the University鈥檚 ranking on SDG 11 can be attributed to advancing work with a global impact, the York community has made numerous contributions to sustainability in the local community. This year, as part of Earth Month and sponsored by the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Youth Climate Report, 214 trees were planted across the Keele and Glendon campuses. York is also partnering with auto magnate Frank Stronach to transform the University鈥檚 campuses into a living lab for the next generation of electric vehicles known as the (Safe, Affordable, Reliable, Innovative Transit).聽

Having recently appointed its first Chief Sustainability Officer, the University is moving ahead with ambitious sustainability plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. York also recently celebrated its 11th consecutive year as one of Canada鈥檚 Greenest Employers for 2023.

Recognizing that each of us has a role to play in creating a better future for our planet, York recently launched the free Microlecture Series in Sustainable Living, an innovative and interdisciplinary open access program that gives participants the opportunity to learn from six of York鈥檚 world-renowned academic experts on a diverse range of topics related to sustainability. To earn a first-of-its-kind Digital Badge in Sustainable Living, participants must pledge to make positive sustainability-focused changes in their daily lives.

TORONTO, Wednesday, April 22, 2020 鈥 This year鈥檚 place 快播视频 as a global leader when measured against the (SDGs). Overall, York placed 33rd out of 767 competing universities from around the world and achieved a top 100 spot in 15 of the 17 SDGs, a substantial gain over last year鈥檚 rankings.

The rankings look at how universities around the world make progress against each of the UN鈥檚 broad sustainability goals through research, stewardship, outreach and teaching.

This year鈥檚 have expanded, not only in the number of participating universities, up from 450 last year to 767 this year, but also through the increased number of SDGs, up to 17 from the 11 measured last year. Both indicate growing recognition of the importance of the SDGs and the essential role of universities in society.

鈥淵ork is one of Canada鈥檚 leading community-engaged universities, and our place in the Times Higher Education global rankings highlights the University鈥檚 commitment to creating positive change for our students, our communities and the world,鈥 said Rhonda L.
