We therefore feel it is important to clearly state that the University administration has taken great care to respect the due process rights of all those involved in the case in question and is fully seized of the need to respect their privacy and to provide a safe workplace, free of harassment and discrimination, to all of our employees.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent stories shared online by many without the benefit of the full set of facts, and by many who are not subject to the same confidentiality constraints, are understandably a cause of concern, especially regarding the potential for additional trauma. Statements attributed to senior members of the University are simply inaccurate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University senior administration recognizes that criticism is an essential part of a healthy society, and that faculty members are fully entitled to criticize and call for changes to the University itself, its policies, practices, and norms. We believe that debate, disagreement, and open dialogue help us make needed change in systems and institutions \u2013 and society \u2013 where racism and discrimination have long been structural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We would like to provide an update on some of the important actions being taken at York to combat racism in all its forms. We acknowledge that to dismantle the deeply ingrained structures of power and privilege that have long allowed racism to thrive, we require a strong, accountable, and action-oriented way forward. We also acknowledge the hard work done by many racialized people, including Black and Indigenous peoples, who have carried the burden of progressive change in public institutions for too long.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>York\u2019s first VP of Equity, People, and Culture was appointed in July 2019 and has moved forward with important work in consultation with members of our community to further advance equity and inclusion. This new role was created to shape how the institution supports all community members, especially those who are traditionally underrepresented.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to extensive work underway across all of the University\u2019s Divisions and 11 Faculties, we want to highlight new and existing initiatives that reflect our collective commitment to strengthen and advance equity and inclusion at York, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The embedding of York's commitment to equity and inclusion in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/uap2020-25\/\">University's Academic Plan 2020\u201325<\/a>, shaping our strategic priorities as one of the most diverse universities in Canada.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/indigenous.yorku.ca\/files\/2017\/08\/Indigenous-Framework-for-York-University-A-Guide-to-Action.pdf?x29983\">The Indigenous Framework for 快播视频: A Guide to Action<\/a><em>,<\/em>&nbsp;endorsed in 2017 by the Indigenous Council at York and the Vice-President Academic and Provost, building on the University\u2019s distinct values, traditions, history, and vision.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The development of the University\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/abr\/\">Framework for Black Inclusion<\/a>,&nbsp;launched in February 2021, following extensive community consultation. Related further community consultation and input about the Action Plan is now underway.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The authorization in the&nbsp;current faculty hiring cycle of dedicated searches for 15 Black scholars and seven Indigenous scholars, strengthening specific program needs and increasing the representation of Black and Indigenous faculty across the University.&nbsp;<\/li><li>York\u2019s Decolonizing Research Action Plan that is currently being developed.<\/li><li>The 快播视频\u2013TD Bank Community Engagement Centre working to increase access to education and facilitate community-engaged research in the Black Creek neighbourhood.<\/li><li>The review, beginning in June 2020, of our pre-existing affirmative action program and unconscious bias education, being undertaken with the 快播视频 Faculty Association.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The launch of the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/vpepc\/presidents-advisory-council\/\" target=\"_blank\">President\u2019s Advisory Council on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion<\/a>&nbsp;under the leadership of the VP Equity, People, and Culture,&nbsp;with broad representation of&nbsp;approximately 50&nbsp;students, staff and faculty&nbsp;community members&nbsp;from across the university in Fall 2020 with a goal of developing a pan-university EDI strategy.<\/li><li>A new self-identification form developed for faculty recruitment candidates to ensure that in future York will have disaggregated data on our recruitment of members of different racialized and visible minority groups, across all tenure stream faculty hiring.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>The appointment of a Senior Advisor, Equity and Representation, in the Division of Equity, People and Culture.<\/li><li>A new&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/gradstudies.yorku.ca\/postdoctoral-fellows\/provosts-postdoctoral-fellowships\/\" target=\"_blank\">Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Black and Indigenous Scholars<\/a>&nbsp;launched in February 2021 as part of a wider commitment to promoting justice and embracing a variety of scholarly perspectives, backgrounds, and lived experiences.<\/li><li>An&nbsp;innovative Black Canadian Studies Certificate in the Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies.<\/li><li>The enhancement of our student self-identification data that is underway to support inclusive decision making.&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vp.students.yorku.ca\/student-census\">student census<\/a>, to be implemented in Fall 2021,&nbsp;will enable&nbsp;disaggregated data to inform program development that targets support where needed and helps to identify systemic barriers for students.<\/li><li>Dedicated research funds of $650K to support Indigenous, Black, and intersectionality scholarship.<\/li><li>Creation of the Organized Research Unit, Centre for Indigenous Knowledges and Languages (CIKL), to facilitate research involving both traditional and contemporary knowledges by Indigenous and non-Indigenous scholars.<\/li><li>York\u2019s&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/rights.info.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Centre for Human Rights, Equity, and Inclusion<\/a>&nbsp;(REI) with&nbsp;a&nbsp;broad&nbsp;mandate to address complaints of harassment and discrimination&nbsp;for&nbsp;York\u2019s&nbsp;over 60,000 faculty, instructors, staff, and students.&nbsp;The REI offers&nbsp;a robust human rights complaint service,&nbsp;responding&nbsp;to concerns and complaints using&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/rights.info.yorku.ca\/ontario-human-rights-code\/\" target=\"_blank\">provincial human rights legislation<\/a>&nbsp;as a framework and related&nbsp;York policies and procedures.<\/li><li>Since June 2020, Student Community &amp; Leadership Development (SCLD) and REI have hosted 10 Race &amp; Privilege: Overdue Conversation sessions. Across these 10 sessions, more than 430 students, faculty, and staff participated.<\/li><li>Training sessions during our Division of Students Professional Development Week:&nbsp;An Honest, Overdue Conversation with Ourselves; Anti-Oppressive Communication Skills training.<\/li><li>A Professional Development Series offered by REI that 4000 community members have attended between May and December 2020.<\/li><li>REI also plays an important role in supporting the work&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/thecentre.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support &amp; Education Office<\/a>&nbsp;(The Centre) by investigating&nbsp;matters under the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/secretariat-policies.info.yorku.ca\/policies\/sexual-violence-policy-on\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sexual Violence Policy<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Student Counselling, Health, and Well-being have undertaken the following initiatives: providing anti-oppressive clinical practice training for all staff and practicum students; meeting with researchers to discuss gaps identified related to supporting racialized students with increasing positive attitudes towards help-seeking behaviours; increasing supports to students facing issues related to racism and system discrimination; welcoming students to express their preference to meet with counsellors of a particular identity; supporting anti-oppression discussions and initiatives through the Community of Practice for Mental Health Professionals at York and developing a referral protocol between members of the Community of Practice to support students with counsellor preference-related requests;&nbsp;and&nbsp;beginning to develop an Anti-oppressive Clinical Consultation\/Practice Framework.<\/li><li>All of the training conducted by Community Supports &amp; Services (CSS) incorporates intersectionality into the learning outcomes and is an underlying principle of the work. For example, last year, CSS completed 118 training sessions for students, staff, and faculty that reached 5730 individuals. (This includes Active Bystander training, Training on the Code and addressing conflict, Adjudication and Tribunal training, Consent Play, Consent week activities, Sexual Violence Response Week events and campaigns, and two sessions with Dr. Haskell on Trauma-informed practices when addressing sexual violence complaints).&nbsp;This training addresses intersectionality and intentionally raises the consciousness of the learner on issues specific to Black and Indigenous community members and systemic barriers that exist.<\/li><li>Further actions are being planned and will continue to evolve based on community input, including in the areas of campus safety, representation, knowledge creation, and community engagement.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>York has long been a leader in advancing the values of equity and social justice, and by their very definition, these are values that need to evolve over time. We acknowledge there is vitally important work still to do in addressing racial inequality and race-based discrimination. Building on York\u2019s progressive legacy and thanks to the work of many community members who share those values, York has re-doubled efforts to advance specific initiatives and strategies to directly address racism and discrimination. We will continue to proudly do so, working in concert with those most impacted. Nous savons que pour \u00e9liminer les structures de pouvoir et de privil\u00e8ge profond\u00e9ment enracin\u00e9es, qui ont longtemps permis au racisme de prosp\u00e9rer, nous devons adopter une approche forte, responsable et bas\u00e9e sur des actions. Nous reconnaissons \u00e9galement le travail acharn\u00e9 de nombreuses personnes racialis\u00e9es, y compris les Noirs et les Autochtones, qui ont support\u00e9 pendant trop longtemps le fardeau du changement progressif dans les institutions publiques.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La toute premi\u00e8re vice-pr\u00e9sidente de l\u2019\u00e9quit\u00e9, des personnes et de la culture de York a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9e en juillet 2019 et elle a entrepris des d\u00e9marches importantes en concertation avec les membres de notre communaut\u00e9 pour faire progresser l\u2019\u00e9quit\u00e9 et l\u2019inclusion.
