{"id":13151,"date":"2021-09-08T11:42:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-08T15:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/president\/?p=13151"},"modified":"2022-02-14T12:39:28","modified_gmt":"2022-02-14T17:39:28","slug":"welcome-to-the-2021-22-academic-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/president\/2021\/09\/08\/welcome-to-the-2021-22-academic-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome to the 2021\u201322 academic year! | Bienvenue pour l\u2019ann\u00e9e universitaire 2021\u20132022!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Dear York Community,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A very warm welcome to the 2021\u201322 academic year!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While I know that we still face challenges ahead, I am grateful that we are able to be safely re-opening our campuses and resuming many of the activities that we have missed over the past eighteen months \u2014 from in-person classes, to extracurricular activities, to just getting together to chat.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the pandemic, the health and well-being of our students, faculty, course directors, researchers, and staff have always remained our highest priority. Those of you returning to our campuses this fall will likely notice that we have instituted multiple layers of pandemic defence that together create a stronger and more resilient protection against COVID-19,&nbsp;including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>upgraded air filtration and ventilation systems running 24\/7 to improve airflow;&nbsp;<\/li><li>mask and face covering requirements for all indoor spaces;&nbsp;<\/li><li>newly installed plexiglass barriers, especially in high-traffic locations;&nbsp;<\/li><li>new contactless hand-sanitization stations;&nbsp;<\/li><li>clear signage regarding COVID-19 safety measures;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>required daily screening and case management with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/yorku.ubixhealth.com\/login\">YU Screen<\/a>&nbsp;tool;<\/li><li>reduced overall numbers on our campuses; and<\/li><li>capped numbers of students in classrooms and other teaching spaces.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, and most importantly, the University is&nbsp;requiring all individuals coming onto our campuses this fall to be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/bettertogether\/2021\/08\/26\/community-update-53-update-on-vaccine-requirement-at-york-university\/\">vaccinated against COVID-19<\/a>,&nbsp;subject to a limited set of exemptions that would permit regular COVID-19 testing as an alternative on the basis of medical or other grounds recognized by the Ontario Human Rights Code.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KwXPdNxwt1o\"><strong><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Welcoming YU Back Safely\" width=\"1778\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/KwXPdNxwt1o?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Welcoming YU Back Safely<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KwXPdNxwt1o\"><strong>Learn how York is welcoming YU Back Safely this academic year<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our community has rallied over the course of the pandemic \u2014 our students, faculty, and course instructors expertly pivoted to remote learning; our researchers continued to find impactful solutions to complex problems, including those related to the pandemic; our required service staff&nbsp;played a critical role in keeping our campuses open and completing many important renovations and upgrades to our facilities; our staff continued to deliver high-quality services remotely to our entire community; our administrative team, including a host of pandemic response committees, supported the complex planning underpinning these efforts; and we have worked together to enable a gradual transition back onto our campuses, creating a new way forward informed by all that we have accomplished during this time.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are still remaining uncertainties about what this fall will bring, and how the public health situation here in Ontario may change. I want to assure all of our community members that the University will continue to work closely with Toronto Public Health, the Chief Medical Officer of Health, and the Ministry of Colleges and Universities to ensure that we are following all public health guidance, and to keep&nbsp;you updated on any important developments. The most up-to-date University planning information can always be found on our<a href=\"https:\/\/yubettertogether.info.yorku.ca\/\">&nbsp;Better Together<\/a>&nbsp;website.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to thank you all again for the innovation, perseverance, and professionalism that you have shown&nbsp;over the past year and a half. Nous avons travaill\u00e9 tous ensemble pour assurer un retour graduel sur nos campus, cr\u00e9ant ainsi une nouvelle voie vers l\u2019avant nourrie de tout ce que nous avons accompli durant cette p\u00e9riode.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il reste beaucoup d\u2019incertitudes sur ce que l\u2019automne nous r\u00e9serve et sur la fa\u00e7on dont la situation sanitaire en Ontario peut \u00e9voluer. Je tiens \u00e0 assurer tous les membres de notre communaut\u00e9 que l\u2019Universit\u00e9 continuera de travailler en \u00e9troite collaboration avec le Bureau de sant\u00e9 publique de Toronto, le m\u00e9decin hygi\u00e9niste en chef et le minist\u00e8re des Coll\u00e8ges et Universit\u00e9s pour assurer le respect des&nbsp;directives de sant\u00e9 publique et que nous continuerons \u00e0 vous tenir au courant de tout d\u00e9veloppement important.
