Today, 快播视频 launches its聽Action Plan聽on Black Inclusion:聽A Living Document for Action. The document outlines a series of strong and accountable commitments and is informed by input received from the community.

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past year, 快播视频, with the help of community members, has intensified its efforts to address systemic anti-Black racism at the University.

In February 2021, following meetings with more than 200 Black community members and other stakeholders, the University released two significant documents for further consultation: Addressing Anti-Black Racism: A Framework on Black Inclusion, and the accompanying Draft Action Plan on Black Inclusion.  A  was held in March 2021 to seek input from faculty, staff and students, followed by a subsequent round of consultations resulting in broad feedback and suggestions from community members across the University. An important theme throughout the consultations was the need for action even while recognizing that input would be ongoing and continue to shape annual priorities.

We are therefore pleased to be announcing today the launch of York鈥檚 first Action Plan on Black Inclusion: A Living Document for Action. The framework and action plan are both available on the Addressing Anti-Black Racism at York website

The action plan outlines a series of strong and accountable commitments informed by the input received, marking an important step that 快播视频 is making to combat anti-Black racism and provide equitable access to learning, teaching, research and professional environments. Commitments in the action plan include: hiring a minimum of 12 new Black faculty members by 2023; creating a new physical space to facilitate meetings among Black faculty, staff and students; increasing funding for scholarships, bursaries and other forms of financial aid in support of Black students; developing Black scholarship incentive grants to support research grant applications; and establishing a new, culturally safe tool for complaints about racial discrimination and harassment, available in English and French.

This work is already well underway, and we are pleased to report on some of the important steps that have already been taken at an institutional level as well as in local units:

  •  have been welcomed to the University, with one additional Black faculty member confirmed for 2022.
  • A new  was launched specifically for Black and Indigenous applicants, with this year鈥檚 four recipients announced in August 2021.
  • A  was launched by the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.
  • $150,000 has been committed to support Black scholars in 2021-22, and consultation has begun on the formation of a funding program for Black scholars, with the goal to launch by early 2022. As part of a $2.25 million commitment over the next three years to advance equity, diversity and inclusion through community engagement and research activities, $50,000 per year has been committed to Black community engagement projects and $250,000 per year to Black research and knowledge mobilization projects, beginning in 2022.
  • $100,000 has been committed to support the activities of York鈥檚 Centre for Research on Latin America and the Caribbean (CERLAC) and the Harriet Tubman Institute ($50,000 per research unit).
  • The Department of Community Safety 快播视频 has taken steps to undertake a review of services and to explore alternative community safety models.
  • The Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion continues to offer its  to community members, and to record numbers of participants.
  • The  recruitment and student support hub was launched to support Black student achievement.
  • The  was launched by the Glendon Race Equity Caucus.
  • New Human Rights Policy and Procedures were approved by the Board of Governors in June 2021.

We have committed to the Action Plan on Black Inclusion being a living document, open to review, and evolving over time. This approach allows us to move forward with the urgent action that is needed while at the same time appreciating that changes may be required as circumstances change. We will also be reporting back to the community on our progress in implementing the action plan on an annual basis. We anticipate that the first progress report will be released in February 2022.

We are also pleased to share that 快播视频 signed on to endorse the Scarborough Charter on Anti-Black Racism and Black Inclusion in Canadian Higher Education on Nov. 18, 2021. Endorsement of this charter is continued affirmation of York鈥檚 commitment to addressing the systemic anti-Black racism that pervades academia, and to fostering pan-Canadian communities of learning that build inclusive, substantive equality.

Bringing about systemic change is everyone鈥檚 responsibility. We call on all members of the York community to read the Framework on Black Inclusion and Action Plan on Black Inclusion: A Living Document for Action, as well as the Scarborough Charter. We also encourage community members to identify actions in their individual, divisional and unit work to address anti-Black racism and white supremacy.

We recognize that this message or topic may have a personal impact for some. Should you feel that you might benefit from support, there are a variety of resources available to the York community listed on the  and through the .

Sincerely,

Rhonda Lenton

York

Chers coll猫gues, ch猫res coll猫gues,

Les quatre laur茅ats de cette ann茅e ont 茅t茅 annonc茅s en ao没t 2021.
  • 150鈥000 $ ont 茅t茅 engag茅s pour appuyer les universitaires noirs en 2021-2022.

La version fran莽aise suit la version anglaise.

Dear members of the York community,

I am pleased to share that yesterday, the University鈥檚 Board of Governors approved Living Well Together: Keele Campus Vision and Strategy, a foundational document that sets a clear path forward for re-imagining more than 190 acres on York鈥檚 Keele Campus.

Centered on the priorities identified within the University Academic Plan 2020鈥2025: Building a Better Futureand underscored by our commitment to addressing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, we have an opportunity to strengthen our impact as a university, and to further our vision of providing a broad sociodemographic of students with access to a high-quality education at a research-intensive university that is committed to enhancing the well-being of the communities we serve.

Recent world events have influenced our thinking regarding sustainability, equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation. Living Well Together: Keele Campus Vision and Strategy embraces social and environmental responsibility, placing emphasis on projects that help us realize the aspirations of our academic plan, fulfill our commitment to being carbon neutral by 2049 or sooner, and leverage York鈥檚  to maximize the positive impact of such a large-scale project.

It is also inspired by our reflections over these past 18 months regarding the future of higher education and how to enhance efforts to utilize the resources we have to strengthen the student learning experience; support new programs in emerging areas of need; and intensify research, entrepreneurship, and incubation, while also meeting community needs.

These uncertain times also serve as an important reminder that the plan must be a living document, open to revision as circumstances demand and shaped by ongoing consultation and engagement conversations within our community, with our surrounding neighbours and future neighbours, and with other important partners, like community groups, governments, and developers.

Living Well Together: Keele Campus Vision and Strategy begins with the reinvigoration of the Harry W. Arthurs Common, the heart of the campus and the location of the 快播视频 subway stop. The plan also sets out four new neighbourhoods: a commercial centre, a high-tech district, a primarily residential district, and a mixed-use residential, commercial, and athletic neighbourhood adjacent to the Pioneer Village subway stop. Each of the new neighbourhoods will add complementary features and projects that support the University鈥檚 academic mission and deliver social benefits like affordable housing and community services 鈥 amenities that will serve the York community, our neighbours, and new residents alike.

A 21st century university campus has an important role to play as an anchor institution 鈥 as a hub, as a resource for surrounding communities, and as a place to learn and grow. This is a once in a lifetime chance to envision, shape, and develop a truly community-engaged university campus: intentionally inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and welcoming to diverse communities.

With the 快播视频 Board of Governors having approved the new Keele Campus Vision and Strategy, we can move forward with the consultation and engagement on preparing a plan for how best to implement the strategy. I look forward to moving this exciting plan forward.

Sincerely,

Rhonda L. Lenton
President and Vice-Chancellor

J鈥檃i h芒te de voir progresser ce projet passionnant.

Veuillez agr茅er mes sinc猫res salutations,

Right The Future is more than mere words; it reflects how our students, faculty, instructors and staff come together every day, sharing their knowledge, experience and skills to drive positive change in our local and global communities. What we do is who we are. And now, thanks to the collective effort of many, others are taking notice.

As captured in the newly released , 快播视频 has been successful in advancing our vision to provide a high-quality education at a research-intensive university informed by a clear set of core values. The rankings highlight solid progress in several important areas, including an impressive sixth-place ranking against all other comprehensive universities in Canada for the second consecutive year.

Students in front of Vari Hall 2021

Despite the complex challenges presented by the global pandemic, the rankings reflect York鈥檚 sharp focus on empowering our community to build a better future. Guided by the University Academic Plan 2020-25, York is on a path for continued success in strengthening our impact on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and advancing our strategic priorities 鈥 21st-century learning, knowledge for the future, from access to success, global engagement, working in partnership and living well together.

鈥淵ork鈥檚 sixth-place ranking as one of Canada鈥檚 top comprehensive schools confirms to our students, and the broader community, that York is providing the high-quality learning experience and research needed to produce the talent and innovation that will keep Canada competitive,鈥 said President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton. 鈥淥ver the past year and a half, York has demonstrated that our reputation for relevant programming, critical inquiry, scholarship, knowledge translation and internationalization extends well beyond our campus walls.鈥

York鈥檚 rankings are up in key priority areas, including the national Reputation category, where we climbed two spots to 18 out of 49. The Reputation score is comprised of the following three categories, and York showed improvements over last year in all of them:

  • 13 out of 49 in the Leaders of Tomorrow category (up three spots);
  • 17 out of 49 for Highest Quality (up five spots); and
  • 20 out of 49 for Most Innovative (up one spot).

As a community, we are tackling complex global issues and preparing students for long-term success. This commitment is reflected in the Student Satisfaction section (Comprehensive University category), where there are noteworthy achievements, with York up two spots in the Mental Health Services category, up three spots in Promoting Indigenous Identity and up five spots in Steps to Prevent Sexual Assault.

Individuals drawn to York come inspired to drive positive change and are inspired by each other to do more. Many of our students pursue opportunities to strengthen their impact in their local communities and around the world, facilitated by the entrepreneurial activities and experiential education available in their programs. Looking forward, the University will continue to meet the changing needs of our students and of society through leading scholarship and research, creative new programming, and flexible learning options offered across our multiple campuses and in collaboration with partners in the private and public sectors. Together, we will relentlessly pursue our shared commitment to enhance the well-being of the communities we serve.

There is much to be proud of and 鈥 importantly 鈥 more work to do.

The following message to the University community is from York President and Vice-Chancellor Rhonda L. Lenton and Provost and Vice-President Academic Lisa Philipps:

We are delighted to announce that the search for the deputy provost to lead our Markham Campus realization has reached a successful conclusion.

This is an important and exciting time in York鈥檚 evolution, as we bring to fruition plans for innovative teaching and research programs, physical space and partnerships for our new Markham Campus in York Region, which will welcome its first cohort of students in September 2023. The new campus is situated in the fastest growing region in Ontario, and will offer students innovative, relevant, job-ready academic programming and research opportunities focused on digital media arts, engineering and technology, entrepreneurship, management, new media and communications.

Following an extensive search that attracted outstanding candidates, the search committee recommended the appointment of Dr.聽Gordon Binsted聽to the position of deputy provost Markham. We are very pleased that Dr. Binsted has accepted our invitation to take聽up a five-year term, commencing Jan. 1, 2022. On Oct. 12, on the president鈥檚 recommendation, the Board of Governors Executive Committee, on behalf of the Board of Governors, concurred with the recommendation for the appointment.

Gordon Binsted
Gordon Binsted

Dr. Binsted joins us from the University of British Columbia (UBC), where he has most recently served as dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Development at the Okanagan Campus. During his time as dean, which began in 2011, he has additionally served as associate provost, strategic health initiatives; interim dean, Faculty of Education; interim vice-principal of research for UBC鈥檚 Okanagan Campus; and interim vice-principal academic and provost for UBC鈥檚 Okanagan Campus. His extensive academic leadership experience at UBC has included a role as founding director of the university鈥檚 School of Health and Exercise Sciences, the development of new degree programs and the redesign of curricula, all while working to focus faculty time and resources on research intensification. Dr. Binsted鈥檚 efforts at UBC have included developing a campus-wide co-op program and a campus-industry incubator, as well as advancing supportive admissions for Indigenous learners. Prior to these leadership roles, Dr. Binsted taught at the universities of British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Illinois Urbana-Champagne, and held roles as research Fellow at the University of Aberdeen and the Beckman Institute in Illinois.

Having made faculty and student renewal a top priority during his time as founding director and then dean, Dr. Binsted shepherded a ten-fold increase in faculty and student cohorts. He has built substantial international profile and recognition for his Faculty and department, in part by establishing formal mechanisms for mentorship and support of faculty as they move through their careers, including teaching, research and grant mentorship. In doing so, divisional research grant success increased by a factor of five, and research output by a factor of 10 in a decade. With extensive experience in collegial governance across the university system, Dr. Binsted is strongly committed to offering opportunities to students to expand their world view and see themselves as responsible to become leaders in their communities.

An advocate for diversity and inclusion in the widest sense, he supports York taking on a national leadership role on reconciliation and the decolonization of the institution, and sees the new Markham Campus as an opportunity to further strengthen the University鈥檚 contributions to the social and economic well-being of communities in surrounding York Region and beyond.

Dr. Binsted holds degrees from the University of British Columbia, McMaster University and the University of Alberta, where he completed his PhD in experimental psychology. His research explores the ways in which the human brain controls movement by detecting and using sensory information. He has published dozens of articles in the top journals in his field and has contributed book chapters and conference proceedings to significant publications and societies. He has received numerous research grants, including several from the National Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. He has given more than 200 presentations at conferences and as a keynote speaker.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Binsted into the York community.

Sincerely,

Rhonda Lenton

LSF鈥檚 Virtual Climate Change Youth Forums program has been named a recipient of Canada鈥檚 Clean50 Top Project award. The annual award recognizes the contributions of projects towards a cleaner, healthier, innovation-based, low-carbon economy supporting all Canadians. Clean50 Top Projects were selected from more than 100 nominees, based on their innovation, their ability to inspire other Canadians to take action and, most importantly, their climate-action impact.

尝厂贵鈥檚&苍产蝉辫; have historically been held as full-day, in-person experiences, but due to the impact of the pandemic, LSF decided to move the Youth Forums online.

鈥淲e knew that skipping a year wasn鈥檛 an option,鈥 says LSF President and CEO Pamela Schwartzberg, 鈥渟ince students needed access to the skills and knowledge provided in the forums. So, LSF created a multi-component virtual event series offered over a six-week period.

鈥淲hile creating a new delivery model, LSF also had to accommodate various school board privacy policies, teachers who were new to technology and virtual learning, events covering multiple time zones and a myriad of school schedules, and student learning at home, at school or a combination of both,鈥 says Schwartzberg. 鈥淥ur new Virtual Youth Forums still build a sense of community and connection among teachers and students from different schools. Most importantly, the forums engaged students in climate change issues, equipped them with skills and knowledge, and empowered them to take action.鈥

The virtual events dramatically increased LSF鈥檚 audience and geographic reach, with 17,600 students from all of Canada鈥檚 provinces and territories receiving an opportunity to contribute to the fight against climate change by participating in an Action Project.

LSF is a Canadian charity founded in 1991. Working with businesses, governments, school boards, universities, communities, educators and youth across Canada, LSF鈥檚 programs and partnerships are helping students learn to address the increasingly difficult economic, social and environmental challenges of the 21st century.
