On May 21, CIAN hosted the CAN-ACN Satellite Symposium, "New Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience," at 첥Ƶ. The event brought together over 100 participants, including students and faculty. Ten trainees gave oral presentations highlighting their research, and 43 posters showcased trainee research in neuroscience.

The event opened with a keynote address by Dr. Lara Pierce from 첥Ƶ, titled "Experience-Driven Effects of Early Life Stress on Language and the Brain," followed by two sessions of five oral presentations by trainees.

Three prizes were awarded: one for the best oral presentation and two for outstanding posters. Zeeshan Haqqee from McGill University received the award for best oral presentation for their work titled "Learning Reflects the Reconstructive Capacity of the Hippocampus." The poster prizes went to Leanne Monteiro from McMaster University, for their poster titled "Sex Differences in the Developing Human Visual Cortex" and to Veronica Nacher and Jennifer Lin from 첥Ƶ for their poster "LFP Recording in the Ventrolateral Prefrontal Cortex During a Head-Unrestrained Memory-Guided Reach Task."

As CIAN Director Dr. Doug Crawford noted in his closing remarks, the symposium demonstrated that Canada’s neuroscience trainees are producing research at a world-class level.

Congratulations to the winners and all participants for their outstanding contributions!

On September 13th, Professor Jeff Schall presented his seminar “A Survey of Law and Neuroscience.” In a packed room of nearly one hundred people, Schall gave a fascinating tour of the chapters of the textbook Law and Neuroscience, which he co-authored. Along the way, he presented several ways the legal system and neuroscience interact, raising questions for which we do not always have answers. Schall illustrated these dilemmas between law and neuroscience with real-life examples: a lawyer who uses brain scans of his clients in their defence even though they present no pathologies, a man who only experiences pedophilic desires when he develops a brain tumour, and a man who strangled his wife and faked her suicide only later to be found to have a brain cyst.

After the fascinating talk, neuroscience students had the opportunity to talk with Prof. Schall and ask him questions.
