{"id":33540,"date":"2017-11-28T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2017-11-28T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/researchdev\/2017\/11\/28\/higher-education-symposium-challenges-trends-in-gaining-a-global-education-2\/"},"modified":"2025-01-30T08:58:16","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T13:58:16","slug":"higher-education-symposium-challenges-trends-in-gaining-a-global-education-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/2017\/11\/28\/higher-education-symposium-challenges-trends-in-gaining-a-global-education-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Higher Education Symposium challenges trends in gaining a global education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/edu.yorku.ca\/event\/internationalizing-higher-education-strategies-challenges-trends-and-pathways\/?instance_id=159\">2017 Internationalizing Higher Education Symposium: Strategies, Challenges, Trends and Pathways<\/a> will critically analyze how universities provide students \u2014 both international and domestic \u2014 with the knowledge and skills to compete in a globalized economy.<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 29, this symposium will assess the capacity of educational institutions to internationalize curricula, as well as create a dialogue surrounding the dichotomies of home and abroad, local and global, domestic and international.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis symposium allows us to begin a discussion on how to promote a comprehensive approach to internationalization,\u201d said Narda Razack, associate dean, Global &amp; Community Engagement in the Faculty of Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies. \u201cTraditionally, the focus tends to be on mobility and international students. However, including the broader categories of policy, programs, curriculum and broader commitment are also critical for global citizenship education.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_248491\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-248491\" src=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2017\/11\/Jane-Ngobia.jpg\" alt=\"Jane Ngobia\" width=\"219\" height=\"269\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jane Ngobia<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Symposium presenters include Jane Ngobia, assistant vice-president, Diversity &amp; Human Rights at the University of Guelph and Roopa Desai Trilokekar, a professor in ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ\u2019s Faculty of Education.<\/p>\n<p>Ngobia will present Internationalizing at Home, making a distinction between two approaches: internationalization at home versus internationalization abroad or across borders. She will focus on the non-mobile majority who do not directly engage in cross-border academic endeavours and the methods to incorporate intercultural and international perspectives into teaching and learning.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_248493\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-248493\" src=\"http:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2017\/11\/Roopa.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"219\" height=\"269\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roopa Desai Trilokekar<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Trilokekar will present Internationalization of Higher Education: Localizing a Global Policy Discourse by focusing on the themes of history, identity, experience, community and policy. She challenges faculty and staff to reclaim internationalization as engagement with diversity.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty, staff and students are invited to participate. The Internationalizing Higher Education Symposium is hosted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/laps.yorku.ca\/laps-in-the-community\/\">Office of the Associate Dean, Global &amp; Community Engagement<\/a>, and runs from 2 to 4pm on Nov. 29 in Room 802 South Ross Building, Keele campus.
