Objective

The scholarships will enable researchers from Ireland to spend 3–6 weeks at a Canadian university, and Canadian researchers to spend the same period at a university on the island of Ireland.

We welcome proposals from all academic disciplines. Some projects may focus directly on the dynamics of conflict and reconciliation; others may address the wider conditions that enable societies to live in peace. Together, these form two broad but connected themes:

  • Pathways to PeaceÌý– the processes of negotiation, mediation, reconciliation, and conflict resolution that build and secure peace.
  • Grounds for HopeÌý– the contexts and practices that help peace settle, grow, and become durable, including governance, law, economics, health, environment, culture, and identity.

Applicants are encouraged to be imaginative in connecting their discipline to these themes. For example, research might explore conflict mediation, the resilience of democratic institutions, environmental sustainability, health systems, cultural identity, or the perspectives of Indigenous peoples on land and community.

The programme recognises that Indigenous knowledge plays a central role in shaping peaceful and sustainable societies and seeks to create space for these voices within the exchange between Ireland and Canada.

Eligibility

Awards will be made toÌýEmerging ScholarsÌý(within seven years of their PhD, following common European research-funding practice) andÌýEstablished Scholars, with all recipients holding the title De Chastelain Scholar.ÌýÌýApplicants without a PhDÌýare eligible where they demonstrate an established academic or research practice of equivalent standing.ÌýUp to half of scholarships each year will be reserved for Emerging Scholars.

Objective
  • support research projects focused on emerging, interdisciplinary issues
  • contribute to advancing research on a given topic and identify how we can better prepare for emerging challenges
  • provide strategic leadership and support, addressing common barriers associated with interdisciplinary research initiatives, including alignment, integration, funding, and knowledge mobilization
  • help promote standards readiness, to identify emerging areas of importance, and to inform a broad range of parties from government, to industry, and beyond.

Proposals are being accepted for the following two high-priority research initiatives:

Canada’s freshwater abundance is no guarantee. A shifting climate, aging infrastructure, growing industrial demands, governance challenges, and persistent inequities are converging and accelerating to create new risks. This research initiative brings together projects that examine vulnerabilities and solutions across ecosystems, infrastructure, technology, governance, and community priorities. How do we protect and manage our freshwater sources and the people and environments that depend on them?

Canada's communications networks are essential to daily life; even a short disruption can significantly impact healthcare, finance, transportation, and other critical systems. As climate hazards intensify and cyber threats evolve, communications systems must be resilient across physical assets, digital layers, governance, and community needs. How do we strengthen the networks that keep Canadians connected and help ensure they remain dependable in the face of emerging risks?

Note: Proposals are welcome from any discipline, including engineering, computer science, social sciences, policy, public health, environmental sciences, and more. CSA group will aim to fund projects from different disciplines because complex problems require cross-disciplinary solutions, but individual proposals are welcome to come from a single field.

Eligibility
  • Proposals must directly address one of the listed topics
  • Principal Investigator and co-applicants must be based at a Canadian publicly funded academic institution, not-for-profit and/or public research organization
  • For full details on project eligibility, please refer to the Application Guide

Information Sessions

English-language information sessions will be provided on:

CSA Group representatives will offer a brief overview of the program objectives, eligibility criteria, and proposal requirements. The information session will include a Q&A. A recording of the session and presentation slides will be posted on this webpage following the information session.

Objective

The projects funded under this call will:

  • contribute to the UN SDG 3.4 to reduce premature mortality from NCDs by one third by 2030;
  • address implementation of strategies across sectors that will:
    • provide evidence and recommendations to national programmes and policies; aiming to inform policy and practice to address the growing burden of NCDs.
    • expand accessibility of programmes addressing NCDs.
    • promote the early prevention, risk reduction, and timely diagnosis of NCDs.
    • ensure continuity of care for NCDs, from prevention and screening to management in the community.
    • promote improved health outcomes in underserved populations, and LMICs
    • improve quality of life across the life course and extend healthy life expectancy.
    • improve local capacity for implementation research, data collection and harmonisation, and stakeholder engagement for strategies leveraging sectors beyond the health system to tackle non-communicable diseases.

While the focus is on settings outside of the healthcare system, collaboration with the relevant healthcare system(s) as part of the project is expected to facilitate effective design and knowledge mobilization.

Priority Research Area (ICRH Pool): Reimagine Circulatory and Respiratory NCD Care

  • Projects in this pool must be relevant to theÌýÌýandÌý, and address the pre-acute and/or post-acute phases of NCDs in an integrated approach in collaboration with and/or beyond the healthcare system. ICRH will also support research that explores care transitions between community and healthcare settings.
  • Examples of proposals that could be supported include, but are not limited to:
    • Pre-acute phase: Interventions addressing social, behavioral and biological risk factors for NCDs, e.g., community-based programs for hypertension, digital tools for early detection of cardiovascular risk, remote screening for atrial fibrillation, smoking prevention and cessation in workplaces and schools, lifestyle interventions for vascular health, mobile clinics/paramedics for resuscitation delivery for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, workplace interventions for sleep hygiene.
    • Post-acute phase: Interventions addressing rehabilitation, secondary prevention and ongoing management of NCDs to prevent recurrence and maintain quality of life e.g. cardiac rehabilitation models in underserved areas, strategies for long-term medication adherence, pulmonary rehabilitation programs, digital tools for respiratory disease follow-up, rehabilitation strategies for cognitive and motor recovery following stroke.Ìý

Priority Research Area (IPPH Pool): NCD Prevention and Health Promotion

  • Projects in this pool must be relevant to theÌý, must meaningfully addressÌý*, and focus on health promotion or primary prevention of NCDs outside the formal healthcare system.

Eligibility

Applicants must apply to the specificÌýGACDÌýfunding agency/ies participating into this call according to their conditions. The funding agency members of theÌýGACDÌýdo not pool their funds together. Applicants must therefore ensure that they are eligible to receive funds and that their proposed projects meet all requirements of at least one of the funders participating in this call.
