The prizes are bestowed to celebrate exceptional master\u2019s and doctoral research work from the recent academic calendar year. The value of the awards is $2,000 for doctoral dissertations and $1,000 for master\u2019s theses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Melodie_Lao-edited.jpg\" alt=\"Melodie Lao\" class=\"wp-image-27421\" width=\"203\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Melodie_Lao-edited.jpg 307w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Melodie_Lao-edited-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Melodie_Lao-edited-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><figcaption>Melodie Lao<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Lao received a Master\u2019s Thesis Prize for \u201cDeveloping an Automated Nitrous Acid (HONO) Platform to Detect Emerging Pollutants in a Commercial and Domestic Environment.\u201d Lao\u2019s innovative research focused on the development and application of new methods to measure the important atmospheric component, HONO. This chemical can react with other atmospheric component to form highly toxic products. Only in the last few years has HONO\u2019s importance indoors been considered, but it remains difficult to measure accurately. Lao\u2019s work creates substantial impact in the field by advancing the ability to measure HONO indoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>Cora Young<\/strong>, Chair of the Examining Committee, commended Lao\u2019s study: \u201cIt was clear to the committee that Melodie\u2019s contributions to the field of atmospheric chemistry are significant, greatly exceeding those typical for an MSc degree. Her work has and will continue to make an impact on a national and global stage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Kathleen-Dogantzis-v.jpg\" alt=\"Kathleen Dogantzis\" class=\"wp-image-27383\" width=\"206\" height=\"196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Kathleen-Dogantzis-v.jpg 592w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2023\/06\/Kathleen-Dogantzis-v-300x285.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><figcaption>Kathleen Dogantzis<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Dogantzis received a Doctoral Dissertation Prize for \u201cUnderstanding the Evolutionary Origin and Ancestral Complexity of Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) Populations.\u201d Through her study, Dogantzis \u2013 who was also awarded a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/2023\/06\/19\/graduate-student-kathleen-dogantzis-receives-governor-general-gold-medal\/\">Governor General\u2019s Gold Medal<\/a> \u2013 advanced knowledge in the field of bee evolution and population genetics and developed new tools to protect the beekeeping industry from the accidental introduction of the highly invasive Africanized bees. Dogantzis created the world\u2019s largest dataset on honeybee genomics, which involved sequencing over 200 new honeybee genomes from all over the world.
