{"id":34597,"date":"2024-08-26T13:13:22","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T17:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/?p=34597"},"modified":"2024-08-26T13:21:49","modified_gmt":"2024-08-26T17:21:49","slug":"science-students-receive-awards-at-summer-research-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/2024\/08\/26\/science-students-receive-awards-at-summer-research-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Science students receive awards at summer research conference"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">At 快播视频\u2019s Faculty of Science\u2019s annual Science Summer 2024 Undergraduate Research Conference, students competed and received awards in recognition of oral and poster presentations on summer projects that covered topics like dark matter, mathematical disease modelling, antibiotic resistance and beyond.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 40 students conducting summer research in York\u2019s Faculties of Science, Environmental &amp; Urban Change, and Liberal Arts &amp; Professional Studies attended the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Participants \u2013 including two Queen's University students working with 快播视频 professors \u2013 had received funding earlier in the year for their summer research positions from the Natural Sciences &amp; Engineering Research Council of Canada Undergraduate Summer Research Awards, the Earle Nestmann Undergraduate Research Awards or the York Science Scholars Awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The projects culminated at the conference, where each student gave either a poster or oral presentation that was judged by faculty members, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference \u2013 and the work leading up to it \u2013 are meant to give students hands-on opportunities to engage in research, noted <strong>Rui Wang<\/strong>, dean of the Faculty of Science, at the event. He stressed other benefits, too. \u201cSharing your ideas and findings with fellow researchers, and building connections that lead to fruitful friendships and collaborations, are an important part of being a scientist. Enjoy these moments and use them to learn about yourself and grow as a researcher.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students who received awards for their oral presentations were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Harry Parmar, a health sciences student at Queen\u2019s University, won first place for the project \u201cExamining Functional Properties of Frontal Eye Field in the Macaque Monkey,\u201d supervised by <strong>Jeffrey Schall<\/strong>, a biology professor in the Faculty of Science.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vesta Tajik<\/strong>, an environmental biology student in York\u2019s Faculty of Science, won second place for the project \u201cDocumenting the impacts of an inter-basin river diversion on Lake Nipigon (Ontario, Canada),\u201d supervised by <strong>Joshua Thienpont<\/strong>, a professor in the Faculty of Environmental &amp; Urban Change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Alrishia Agard<\/strong>, a biomedical science student in York\u2019s Faculty of Science, won third place for the project \u201cAssessing the impact of road de-icers on the osmoregulatory physiology of Chironomus riparius larvae,\u201d supervised by <strong>Andrew Donini<\/strong>, biology professor in the Faculty of Science.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The students who received awards for their poster presentations were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Yash Shrestha<\/strong>, a health sciences student at Queen\u2019s University, won first place for the project \u201cProbing Late-LTP following selective inhibition of TrkC-PTP\u03c3 complex in a mouse model,\u201d supervised by <strong>Steven Connor<\/strong>, a biology professor in the Faculty of Science.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Michael Petosa<\/strong>, a biomedical science student in York\u2019s Faculty of Science, won second place for the project \u201cA New Route to Pyridine-Substituted Piperidines,\u201d supervised by <strong>Arturo Orellana<\/strong>, a chemistry professor in the Faculty of Science.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shahen Alexanian<\/strong>, a computer science and mathematics student in York\u2019s Lassonde School of Engineering, won third place for the project \u201cEvaluating the Introduction of a Variational Autoencoder into a Multi-omics Workflow,\u201d supervised by <strong>Xin Gao<\/strong> and <strong>Hannah Jankowsi<\/strong>, mathematics and statistics professors in the Faculty of Science.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more about the students and their projects in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2024\/08\/2024-Summer-Undergraduate-Research-Conference-Booklet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conference program booklet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2024\/08\/23\/science-students-receive-awards-at-summer-research-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Courtesy of YFile<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At 快播视频\u2019s Faculty of Science\u2019s annual Science Summer 2024 Undergraduate Research Conference, students competed and received awards in recognition of oral and poster presentations on summer projects that covered topics like dark matter, mathematical disease modelling, antibiotic resistance and beyond.
