Michael Giudice\u2019s journey with York began in 2005 when he joined the Department of Philosophy as a faculty member, and since then, he has become an integral part of the University community. Now, as Chair and Professor of Philosophy, Michael\u2019s commitment to York is shaped not only by his professional achievements but also by the lasting connections he has formed within the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A particularly fond memory is of when he brought his infant daughter in to work one morning early in his career at York. Rather than being an obstacle, his department embraced the situation, treating his daughter like a celebrity. The echoes of that warm welcome still resonates today, that baby is now a young woman and student at York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One of Michael\u2019s proudest professional accomplishments is the co-creation of York\u2019s combined Juris Doctor (JD)\/Master of Arts (MA) in Philosophy program, launched in 2009. This unique program, the first of its kind in Canada, bridges the gap between the disciplines of law and philosophy, providing students with an interdisciplinary experience. Michael serves as co-founder and co-director of the program, mentoring students whose passions combine the two fields that have shaped his career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Michael\u2019s scholarly expertise lies in the philosophy of law. His research delves into complex areas such as international law, state-Indigenous relations and legal pluralism, always with an eye on how legal frameworks must adapt to contemporary challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Michael\u2019s philosophical training and years of academic leadership equip him with a unique perspective on governance and organisational structure. He sees York\u2019s mission as an ongoing balancing act between the liberal arts and professional programs, a balance he believes is essential for a well-rounded educational experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond his work at York, Michael was elected Executive Director of the Canadian section of the International Association for Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy in 2022. His contributions to legal philosophy are geared towards rethinking and evolving how we approach governance, justice and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Michael hopes to bring his deep commitment to York\u2019s values to the table.
