{"id":1929,"date":"2023-11-23T09:24:09","date_gmt":"2023-11-23T14:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/unit\/pvpa\/?p=1929"},"modified":"2023-11-23T09:26:10","modified_gmt":"2023-11-23T14:26:10","slug":"response-from-the-provost-regarding-academic-freedom-and-freedom-of-expression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/unit\/pvpa\/2023\/11\/23\/response-from-the-provost-regarding-academic-freedom-and-freedom-of-expression\/","title":{"rendered":"Response from the Provost regarding academic freedom and freedom of expression"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>The following message was shared with members of the York community on November 23, 2023<\/em>:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dear community members,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The University has received the statement of&nbsp;November 13, 2023, signed by faculty members, professors\u2019 emeriti,&nbsp;and graduate students, to express concerns&nbsp;specifically&nbsp;regarding&nbsp;academic freedom, free speech,&nbsp;and freedom of expression.&nbsp;Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns \u2013 know that we understand that this has been an especially challenging time for many.&nbsp;I am writing back today to respond on behalf of the University. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We take the matters&nbsp;raised in the statement&nbsp;seriously and&nbsp;want to affirm&nbsp;快播视频's resolute commitment to academic freedom&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;an important protection afforded to academics&nbsp;for their research or public statements made in the course of their scholarly work.&nbsp;This&nbsp;has been&nbsp;expressed clearly in a <a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2020\/09\/29\/york-universitys-commitment-to-academic-freedom\/\">previous statement<\/a>&nbsp;made by President&nbsp;Lenton,&nbsp;and&nbsp;again&nbsp;more&nbsp;recently,&nbsp;on&nbsp;November&nbsp;2:&nbsp;\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2023\/11\/02\/safe-and-inclusive-campuses-for-all\/\">Safe and inclusive campuses for all\u201d&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;YFile (yorku.ca)<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With respect to free speech and freedom of expression on our campuses, there are a few important pieces of information worth reviewing&nbsp;and which answer the&nbsp;remaining&nbsp;concerns&nbsp;that have been&nbsp;raised. York affirms its responsibility to uphold the various <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/labour\/collective-agreements\/\">collective agreements<\/a>&nbsp;and will continue to adhere to the below policies and regulations:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/secretariat\/policies\/policies\/free-speech-statement-of-policy\/\">Statement of Policy on Free Speech,<\/a>&nbsp;as approved by Senate and the Board of&nbsp;Governors in 2018&nbsp;<\/li><li>Student Organizations must conduct themselves in accordance with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/secretariat\/policies\/policies\/regulation-regarding-student-organizations\/\">Regulation Regarding Student Organizations<\/a>, January 2023&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/oscr.students.yorku.ca\/csrr\">Student Code of Rights and Responsibilities<\/a>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We have received positive feedback from many community members who have noticed the&nbsp;impact of moving toward a more&nbsp;proactive&nbsp;and collaborative&nbsp;approach to Community Safety 快播视频.
