{"id":1028,"date":"2003-03-26T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2003-03-26T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/2003\/03\/26\/york-students-take-prizes-for-francophone-writing\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T11:32:13","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T15:32:13","slug":"york-students-take-prizes-for-francophone-writing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2003\/03\/26\/york-students-take-prizes-for-francophone-writing\/","title":{"rendered":"York students take prizes for francophone writing"},"content":{"rendered":"<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20030326\/3franc.jpg\" alt=\"\" align=\"left\" border=\"0\" hspace=\"8\" \/><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><strong>(Left to right: L\u00e9lia Young, Mirella Circosta and Claire Martin)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Members and students of the Departments of French Studies, Faculty of Arts and Glendon, the Toronto Society of Writers (La Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des \u00e9crivain-e-s de Toronto, La SET) and the Association of Franco-Ontarian Authors ( L\u2019AAOF) recently celebrated francophone writing at an important literary event, at The Esplanade in Toronto, organized by French Prof. Lelia Young, Faculty of Arts.<\/p>\n<p>At the event, the Micheline Saint-Cyr Prize was awarded to ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ students who participated in a short-story writing contest, and well-known writers were given recognition. The Micheline Saint-Cyr Prize was established by Young in homage to the writer who founded La Chasse-Galerie in Toronto (1968-1980), organized Toronto francophone writers in 1984 and served as the coordinator of the literacy centre, Alpha-Toronto, from 1988 to 1996.<\/p>\n<p>In addition,\u00a0as part of the event l'AAOF organized\u00a0 \"Diverse Voices of the franco-Ontarian Book\" (\"Voix diverses du livre franco-ontarien\").<\/p>\n<p>Micheline Saint-Cyr Prize winners were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">First Prize: Mirella Circosta, Glendon College <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Second Prize: Karine Bellavance, Faculty of Arts <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Third Prize: Erin Robinson, Faculty of Arts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first prize was $150 from the Society of Writers of Toronto (La SET). The second and third prizes were $50 each. Winners were also given award certificates, books, the magazine <i>Virages<\/i>, which publishes short stories, and the literary journal <i>Langage et cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9. <\/i>Circosta\u2019s short story will be published in <i>Virages<\/i>; and the short stories of Bellavance and Robinson will be published in <i>Language et cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9<\/i> (Fall 2003).<\/p>\n<p>This event had been publicized on the radio and in the written press. The first prize winner of the Micheline Saint-Cyr Prize, Mirella Circosta, was mentionned on the TFO programme <i>Panorama<\/i> (la chronique <i>Les Gens qui bougent<\/i>), and Radio-Canada announced the names of the three winners.<\/p>\n<p>Quebec novelist Claire Martin, the SET\u2019s guest of honour, read her short story entitled, \"Combien j\u2019ai douce souvenance\". Her visit was organized by Young and sponsored by the Canada Council, with support from the Office of Quebec, the Association of Franco-Ontarian Writers and <i>Virages <\/i>magazine.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\">Martin is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, Officer of the Order of Canada, Companion of the Order of Canada and recipient of the Governor General\u2019s Prize and and the Prize of the Government of Quebec for <i>La Joue droite,<\/i> which is the first volume of <i>Dans un gant de fer <\/i>(Montreal: Le Cercle du livre de France). Her more recent works are <i>Toute la vie<\/i>, a collection of short stories (Quebec City: L\u2019Instant m\u00eame, 1999), the novel <i>L\u2019Amour impuni<\/i> (Quebec City: L\u2019Instant m\u00eame, 2000) and the novel <i>La Brigande<\/i> (Quebec City: L\u2019Instant m\u00eame, 2001). <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of French
