{"id":107342,"date":"2012-03-22T18:48:20","date_gmt":"2012-03-22T22:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=107342"},"modified":"2025-04-02T08:50:41","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T12:50:41","slug":"hello-universe-its-york-calling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2012\/03\/22\/hello-universe-its-york-calling\/","title":{"rendered":"Hello, Universe, it's York calling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>They give voice to the stars, but not the Hollywood kind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2012\/03\/Paul_Delaney-story-image1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-108391\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2012\/03\/Paul_Delaney-story-image1.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Delaney \" width=\"311\" height=\"323\" \/><\/a>Instead, every Monday night at 9pm, York faculty member <strong>Paul Delaney (right)<\/strong>\u00a0and astronomy students from\u00a0the Faculty of Science &amp; Engineering welcome the world into the York Observatory for an evening of star gazing and conversation on their online radio show \u201cThe 快播视频niverse\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The show, which\u00a0is streamed live on the Internet radio station <a href=\"http:\/\/astronomy.fm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">astronomy.fm<\/a>,\u00a0airs at the same time as the observatory\u2019s online\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/astronomy.blog.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">live viewing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, March 26, Delaney and his students\u00a0hosted the\u00a0100th radio broadcast of \"The 快播视频niverse\". Since its initial broadcast in 2009, which was titled \u201cLive from YorkU\u201d, the number of listeners who tune in regularly to the show has grown \u201castronomically\u201d, says Delaney, who is a senior lecturer in the faculty\u2019s Department of Physics &amp; Astronomy and director of the observatory on the Keele campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe popularity of the show has spread around the world,\u201d he says.\u00a0\u00a0\"It started during York\u2019s 50th anniversary year and went live on Feb. 2, 2009, which also happened to be the International Year of Astronomy. Since then, it has been an incredible ride. We talk about anything to do with astronomy and space science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Between the live broadcast and\u00a0repeats over the ensuing 24 hours, the show reaches some 16,000 listeners in more than 100 countries, according to statistics kept by astronomy.fm.\u00a0 Delaney says it is one of the station's biggest audiences.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2012\/03\/jup-jul19-20-story-image.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-108225 size-full\" style=\"margin: 8px;\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2012\/03\/jup-jul19-20-story-image.jpg\" alt=\"An image of Jupiter, captured by the observatory\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a>An image of Jupiter, captured by the observatory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the 100th show, Delaney\u00a0conducted a webcam tour of the York Observatory to\u00a0introduce listeners to the students and faculty working with the telescopes. The show also featured a recap of what Delaney says has been a very busy\u00a0period in\u00a0astronomy.<\/p>\n<p>As part of their show and online viewing, Delaney and the\u00a0students regularly answer questions from the public and field requests from astronomy buffs to have the telescope moved to view a particular planet or star cluster.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, the observatory has provided its audience with images of meteors and satellites and views of the Orion Nebula and Earth\u2019s moon.
