{"id":15523,"date":"2010-09-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-09-22T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/2010\/09\/22\/michael-helms-latest-book-nominated-for-scotiabank-giller-prize\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T15:07:01","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T19:07:01","slug":"michael-helms-latest-book-nominated-for-scotiabank-giller-prize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2010\/09\/22\/michael-helms-latest-book-nominated-for-scotiabank-giller-prize\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Helm's latest book nominated for Scotiabank Giller Prize"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100922\/MichaelHelmcities.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"225\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>York English Professor Michael Helm\u2019s recent book <em>Cities of Refuge<\/em> is one of 13 to make this year's Scotiabank Giller Prize long list, announced Monday.<\/p>\n<p>This is the second time one of Helm\u2019s books has been nominated for the $50,000 award \u2013 the first was in 1997 for his debut novel <em>The Projectionist<\/em> (Douglas &amp; McIntyre).<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Cities of Refuge<\/em> (McClelland &amp; Stewart, 2010), a single act of violence resonates through several lives, connecting close by fears to distant political terrors. At the story\u2019s centre is the complex, intensely charged relationship between a 28-year-old woman and the father who abandoned her when she was young. (See <em>YFile<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/archive\/index.asp?Article=14813\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">May 11<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>Helm\u00a0is in good company. David Bergen (<em>The Matter with Morris<\/em>) who won the Giller in 2005, Douglas Coupland (<em>Player One)<\/em> and Jane Urquhart (<em>Sanctuary Line<\/em>) are also on this year\u2019s long list.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20100927\/MichaelHelmatDoor(Alexandra.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"128\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Left: Michael Helm. Award winner Alistair Macleod) for his debut short story collection <em>Light Lifting<\/em>, Avner Mandelman for <em>The Debba<\/em>, Tom Rachman for <em>The Imperfectionists<\/em>, Sarah Selecky for <em>This Cake is for the Party<\/em>, Johanna Skibsrud for <em>The Sentimentalists<\/em>, Cordelia Strube for <em>Lemon<\/em>, Joan Thomas for <em>Curiosity<\/em>, Dianne Warren for <em>Cool Water<\/em> and Kathleen Winter for <em>Annabel<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Jury members CBC journalist Michael Enright, American author Claire Messud and United Kingdom writer Ali Smith call it a \u201cvibrant and exciting list\u201d chosen from 98 books, submitted by 38 publishers.<\/p>\n<p>They wrote: \u201cWe came very harmoniously to our final decision, which, in the ranging of its featured books between astonishing debuts and brilliant new work by already well-known, major Canadian writers, and between the historical and the contemporary, the traditional and the experimental, the long, the short and the unexpected in both story and form, stands as a showcase in its own right of the vision, the energy, the internationalism and the open-eyed versatility of contemporary Canadian
