{"id":15561,"date":"2010-10-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-10-01T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/2010\/10\/01\/chilean-artist-celebrates-his-native-country-at-glendon\/"},"modified":"2025-04-01T15:07:09","modified_gmt":"2025-04-01T19:07:09","slug":"chilean-artist-celebrates-his-native-country-at-glendon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2010\/10\/01\/chilean-artist-celebrates-his-native-country-at-glendon\/","title":{"rendered":"Chilean artist celebrates his native country at Glendon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p align=\"left\">If travelling to South America to explore its longest country is out of the question, then the next best option may be visiting the Glendon Gallery\u2019s first exhibition of the academic year, <em>Chile al norte del mundo<\/em> (Chile at the Top of the World), on now.<\/p>\n<p>Chilean artist Jorge Gonzalo Fernandez\u2019s collection of paintings and sculptures provides a comprehensive cross-section of the regions and cultures of his country of origin, with the intention of celebrating Chile\u2019s 200th anniversary as a country.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20101001\/JorgeArtistandMartine.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"259\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Right: Jorge Gonzalo Fernandez (left) with Martine Rheault, Glendon coordinator of artistic &amp; cultural affairs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gonzalo Fernandez comes from a family of painters and sculptors, who emigrated from Spain to Chile. He hails from Vi\u00f1a del Mar, a seaside resort in central Chile, but has lived in Brampton since 1986.<\/p>\n<p>His paintings \u2013 oil on canvas \u2013 feature bright, primary colours and touch on significant themes of Chilean culture. Symbols of ancient, pagan rites and animist manifestations combine with Christian themes portraying the many layers of Chilean society. Among these, the painting of <em>The<\/em> <em>Cueca<\/em>, an ancient ritual dance with African influences, displays traditional costumes. <em>La Mach\u00ed<\/em> presents an important shaman-like figure \u2013 sometimes filling the role of a medicine man, a psychologist or a musician \u2013 straddling the real and the spirit world. <em>Rodeo<\/em> portrays the Chilean cowboy tradition, which is different from the Spanish bullfight, aiming to control the animal, not to kill him or make him suffer.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20101001\/JorgeCuecadance.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"294\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Left: <em>The Cueca<\/em> by Jorge Gonzalo Fernandez<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Various paintings represent traditional occupations of the country, among these the <em>Pescador<\/em> \u2013 a fisherman with distinctly native features in a typical Chilean boat against a mountainous backdrop. A painting of a bearded man playing the hurdy-gurdy on a street corner brought humour and surprise to the exhibit\u2019s opening evening, when its subject \u2013 a close friend of the artist \u2013 stood next to his image.<\/p>\n<p>A number of sculptures complement the paintings, touching once again on fundamental Chilean themes. <em>Pachamama<\/em> \u2013 or Mother Earth \u2013 carved out of honey-coloured maple, conveys the warmth and sensuousness of the subject. <em>The<\/em> <em>Magic of Chiloe<\/em> is a two-sided, Janus-like male head also carved out of maple, whose other side is a phallic symbol. It illustrates the fable of the magical woodcutter, who lived in the forests of this coastal island and could transform his axe into a flute, seducing young women with his music.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20101001\/JorgePachamamaMotherEarth2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"333\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Right:<\/strong> <strong><em>Pachamama<\/em> \u2013 Mother Earth \u2013 by Jorge Gonzalo Fernandez<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A large allegorical painting pays homage to one of the country\u2019s greatest literary and cultural figures, Pablo Neruda. In a magical, surrealist style, Neruda is sitting at a table writing, surrounded by features of the country\u2019s landscape. These include the Andes, the ocean and its bounty, a semi-transparent muse playing his harp, Machu Picchu (the theme of one of the poet\u2019s works) fruits of the earth, an onion floating in the sky (a reference to one of Neruda\u2019s famous poems) and others. This monumental work summarizes the artist\u2019s love of his country, his devotion to its culture and to the man who contributed much to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20101001\/JorgePabloNerudapainting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"246\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Left:<\/strong> <strong>An allegorical painting of Pablo Neruda<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Many students, faculty, staff, members of the diplomatic corps representing numerous South-American countries in Toronto, as well as Chileans who came to celebrate the country\u2019s anniversary and the artist, attended the exhibit opening on Sept. 16. Glendon\u2019s coordinator of artistic &amp; cultural affairs, Martine Rheault, expressed her thanks to all those whose support and contributions made the event such a success.<\/p>\n<p>One of those contributors was Jose Labra and his company Flo Trading of Oakville, who enhanced the Chilean experience of the night by providing typical Chilean snacks, such as ceviche, artichoke and olive mousse, octopus, sea bass and salmon tidbits. Chilean wines, generously donated by the Consulate of Chile in Toronto, complemented the experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/photos\/20101001\/Jorgepaintingandmodelbest.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"215\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"8\" vspace=\"8\" \/>Right: Rolando Vasquez, the model for the hurdy-gurdy player, stands next to\u00a0the painting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The opening of <em>Chile al norte del mundo<\/em> was the initial event in the 19th Festival of Images\u00a0&amp; Words \u2013 <em>Festival 19 de la palabra y de la\u00a0imagen<\/em> \u2013 currently in progress and encompassing a whole series of Latin-American cultural events, under the direction of Spanish Professor Emerita Margarita Feliciano, director of <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.glendon.yorku.ca\/antares\/english\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antares Publishing House<\/a><\/span> at Glendon. The festival features talks, movies, art exhibitions and much more. The musical performance was followed by a book launch of recent publications by Antares, under the title <em>Otras latitudes: Voces argentinas alrededor del Paralelo 49<\/em> (Other Latitudes: Argentinian Voices Around the 49th Parallel).<\/p>\n<p><em>Chile al norte del mundo<\/em> runs at the Glendon Gallery until Oct. 2.
