Born in Toronto, Appathurai has been a NATO spokesperson since 2004. Prior to that, he held other positions with NATO, the Department of National Defence in Ottawa and the CBC. He has published more than 25 articles and book chapters on security issues including NATO, peacekeeping, Euro-Atlantic security, Canada and regional security cooperation.<\/p>\n
The annual John W. Holmes Memorial Lecture at Glendon is delivered in English and French and honours the late diplomat, writer, administrator and teacher who was a professor of international relations at Glendon from 1971 to 1981. Holmes, who received an Order of Canada from Governor General Roland Michener in 1969, was a tireless promoter of Canada at home and abroad, in political, diplomatic and educational circles. He also participated in the founding of the United Nations and attended its first General Assembly in 1945.<\/p>\n
