York environmental studies Professor Peter Victor has been named the recipient of this year\u2019s prestigious Canada Council Molson Prize in the social sciences for outstanding lifetime achievement.<\/p>\n

Victor, a\u00a0renowned research professor in ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ\u2019s Faculty of Environmental Studies, is being recognized for his trailblazing research which has led to the emergence of a new discipline named ecological economics.\u00a0The $50,000 Molson Prize is presented by the Canada Council for the Arts<\/a> in collaboration with the Social Sciences\u00a0& Humanities Research Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Two awards are bestowed upon Canadian scholars annually to honour their lifetime achievements and ongoing contributions to Canada\u2019s cultural and intellectual life.\u00a0Prizes are awarded in the social sciences and humanities category, or in the arts, with one prize offered in each category.<\/p>\n

\u201cA distinguished environmental economist, Peter is a most commendable choice for the Molson Prize,\u201d said Stan Shapson, York\u2019s vice-president research\u00a0& innovation.\u00a0\u201cPeter has earned international recognition for his important contribution to the field of environmental studies and his commitment to research excellence.\u00a0His recent book\u00a0\u2013 Managing Without Growth\u00a0\u2013 <\/em>has received international attention.\u00a0His work is a prime example of the leadership ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ\u2019s research-intensive faculty members continue to provide in order to advance knowledge and develop solutions to the many challenges we face in our everyday lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"ManagingA top\u00a0expert in his field, Victor<\/a> has examined environmental issues as an academic, consultant and public servant for\u00a0more than\u00a0four decades.\u00a0His pioneering research explores the many ways in which the economy is embedded in and dependent on the environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cProfessor Victor has demonstrated that we, as a society, can explore novel approaches to managing without economic growth while sustaining our environment and improving our lives,\u201d said Barbara Rahder, dean of York's Faculty of Environmental Studies.\u00a0\u201cHis groundbreaking research can have a far-reaching impact on how people all over the world can develop healthy communities for generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victor has written Managing\u00a0Without\u00a0Growth: Slower by Design, not Disaster,<\/em> among several other publications.\u00a0His extensive portfolio currently includes serving as a member of the advisory committee on the National Accounts for Statistics Canada, the academic advisory panel of TruCost, the board of the David Suzuki Foundation, the board of the New Economics Institute, and the editorial advisory boards of several academic journals.\u00a0He was also\u00a0recently appointed\u00a0chair of the Greenbelt Council of Ontario (see YFile<\/em>, June 2<\/a>).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
