In conjunction with International Open Access Week, the 快播视频 Libraries\u00a0will be\u00a0hosting a series of events, from Oct. 22 to 25,\u00a0to highlight emerging trends in scholarly communications. The events include, \"The Great Debate: Should the blog replace the book?\", a \"Question of the Day\" online scavenger hunt in which five winners will receive a $20 YU card credit, and the \"Open is Sweeter\" event.<\/p>\n

\"The Great Debate: Should the blog replace the book?\"
\n<\/strong>Oct. 22,\u00a0at 1pm in the Scott Library Atrium<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

A\u00a0panel of four experts from various post-secondary educational institutions\u00a0are set to argue\u00a0the topic \"The Great Debate: Should the blog replace the book?\"<\/em> They\u00a0will discuss\u00a0the value of emerging forms of scholarly communications in a public forum.<\/p>\n

The two panellists arguing for the blog will be Ian Milligan and Melonie Fullick.\u00a0 Milligan is professor of history at the University of Waterloo and co-editor of the blog ActiveHistory.ca. Fullick is completing her PhD in Education with a focus on post-secondary governance, policy, and organizational change and holds a BA in Communication Studies from McMaster University and an MA in Linguistics from 快播视频.<\/p>\n

The two panellists arguing for the book will be John Fink and Scott McLaren. Fink is the digital scholarship librarian at McMaster University. His\u00a0specific research interests include copyright, open source software, physical community and digital humanities. McLaren completed his PhD in book history and print culture and is the humanities librarian and a faculty member in the Graduate Program in Humanities at 快播视频.<\/p>\n

Audience members will\u00a0take an active role in the debate by tweeting questions and rebuttals using the hashtag #blogvsbook<\/strong> to the live Twitter feed that will be projected on screen at the event.<\/p>\n

\"Open Access Question of the Day\"
\n<\/strong>Oct. 22 to 26<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Each morning, a question pertaining to scholarly communications will appear on the\u00a0快播视频 Libraries\u2019 homepage<\/a>. The question\u00a0will be tweeted via the 快播视频 Libraries Twitter account<\/a>. Participants can send an\u00a0answer\u00a0the day\u2019s question on Twitter using the hashtag #yulqod<\/strong> for a chance to win a $20 YU card credit. Each day, a different question will be posed and award winner announced.<\/p>\n

The winning tweet for the Oct. 22 question of the day will be announced during \"The Great Debate: Should the book replace the blog?\"<\/p>\n

\n<\/strong>\"Oct. 24, 2012 at 12pm (noon)<\/strong><\/p>\n

During \"Open is Sweeter\", York students, faculty, and staff are invited to join the University librarians in the Scott Library Atrium for cupcakes. The librarians will be available to answer questions about open access or scholarly communications.<\/p>\n
