York\u2019s Knowledge Mobilization (KMb) Unit, in partnership with the York Region Community Foundation (YRCF),\u00a0has released its first Living in York Region Vital Signs<\/em> report.<\/p>\n

Titled \"Living in York Region: Our Community Check-up\", the report presents context indicators for 12 issue areas and summarizes the opinions of more than 1,000\u00a0York Region residents who attended focus groups and completed an online survey between March and June 2011. The project is part of a national initiative covering 22 Canadian communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\"York<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The report\u00a0provides baseline indicators and resident perceptions of how well the region's communities are faring in key quality of life areas such as learning, health, housing and the environment.\u00a0It\u00a0emphasizes the\u00a0importance of connections in an\u00a0area encompassing some\u00a01,756 square kilometres of rural, forested and urban landscape and concludes that\u00a0York Region is a healthy community.<\/p>\n

\u201cYork has been pleased to be part of this important project in York Region,\u201d said Robert Hach\u00e9, vice-president research & innovation at York. \u201cThis report will provide a baseline against which our knowledge mobilization and social innovation initiatives can be measured. We will now have the ability to describe the difference that research is making in the lives of our local communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Staff from ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ's KMb Unit\u00a0served\u00a0on the project steering committee to support the strategic and operational objectives of the report.\u00a0David Dewitt, former assistant vice-president research, served as the University's representative on the\u00a0project's leadership council,\u00a0which provided strategic oversight around the development, rollout and sustainability of the project.\u00a0York alumna Marie Murnaghan (PhD '10) contributed to the project by seeking and analyzing data in the\u00a012 indicator areas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis report, based on research and data as well as the experiences and voices of York Region residents, holds great potential in mobilizing action around the human services provision,\u201d said Michael Johnny, York's\u00a0knowledge mobilization\u00a0manager.\u00a0\u201cThe KMb Unit at York will continue to work with leaders and decision makers, using this report, to help support informed decision making on important issues to all residents of York Region.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report found that\u00a0York Region\u00a0residents\u00a0have great pride in their communities, whether they are\u00a0long-time residents or newcomers,\u00a0but\u00a0years of sustained growth \u2013 and the prospect of much more to come in the future \u2013 have created pressures in two key areas that require\u00a0urgent attention.<\/p>\n

The first area, subtitled Getting Around<\/strong>, highlights that\u00a0infrastructure and services \u2013 and most importantly public transit \u2013 must keep pace with growth so people are able to move conveniently and efficiently within York Region and connect to neighbouring communities.<\/p>\n

The second priority, subtitled Housing<\/strong>, asserts that there be more\u00a0affordable choices and supports for people in emergency situations.<\/p>\n

To these two priority issues the report adds a third that speaks of the need to build awareness and to better communicate York Region\u2019s existing strengths. The issue, subtitled\u00a0Navigating Existing Resources<\/strong>, highlights the importance of ensuring that people know what\u00a0services and programs already exist in the region\u00a0and how to access them.<\/p>\n

The Living in York Region Vital Signs<\/em> report is part of\u00a0the Vital Signs national\u00a0initiative comprised of\u00a0annual community check-ups that are conducted by 22 community foundations across Canada to\u00a0measure the vitality of\u00a0communities.\u00a0The project received funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.<\/p>\n
