This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Komagata Maru Episode when Canada turned away 376 migrants of South Asian origin aboard a Japanese steamship in Vancouver\u2019s Burrard Inlet. The South Asian Law Students\u2019 Association (SALSA) at ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ\u2019s Osgoode Hall Law School will launch\u00a0Komagata Maru Week<\/a> (March 10-15) and the Komagata Maru Reflections Project.<\/p>\n

A series of events, including an exhibit, an award-winning documentary and several lectures will commemorate the anniversary of the episode. A portion of the Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada\u2019s Komagata Maru Collection will be displayed in the Osgoode Hall Law School Library, Ignat Kaneff Building, Keele campus, during regular library hours.<\/p>\n

Monday, March 10<\/strong>, 12:30 to 2:30pm, Moot Court, Ignat Kaneff Building: Screening of the documentary, A Continuous Journey<\/em>, followed by a Q&A session with Ali Kazimi, filmmaker and a professor in York\u2019s Department of Film.<\/p>\n

Tuesday, March 11<\/strong>, noon to 2pm, Moot Court, Ignat Kaneff Building: University of Toronto Professor Audrey Macklin will discuss, \u201cGetting to We: The Komagata Maru, the Unmaking of Empire and the Making of a Settler Society.\u201d\u00a0 The lecture is co-sponsored by SALSA, the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers (Osgoode Student Branch), the South Asia Research Group and United South Asians at York.<\/p>\n

Wednesday, March 12<\/strong>, 12:30 to 2:30pm, Helliwell Centre for Innovation in Dispute Resolution, Ignat Kaneff Building: Pardeep Nagra, executive director of the Sikh Heritage Museum of Canada, will discuss \u201cSikhs in Canada: The Legacy of the Komagata Maru.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thursday, March 13<\/strong>, 6 to 8pm, Law Society of Upper Canada, 130 Queen St. W., Toronto: Former British Columbia Premier Ujjal Dosanjh will discuss \u201cWhy Apologizing for Historical Wrongs is Wrong.\u201d The lecture is co-sponsored by SALSA and the Osgoode Alumni Association<\/a>. Everyone is welcome to attend (RSVP<\/a>)<\/p>\n

While events during Komagata Maru Week are free and open to all, donations will be accepted on behalf of the Canadian Association of Refugee Lawyers<\/a>.<\/p>\n
