The students were honored for their outstanding work by Associate Dean (Students) Peter Avery during a recognition ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>Avery congratulated the winners in front of a gathering of students\u2019 family members and professors in York\u2019s Chancellor\u2019s Room. There, each student was recognized, and the adjudicators\u2019 comments concerning their submission were read aloud.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2016\/12\/writing-prize-group-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-237158\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2016\/12\/writing-prize-group-1.jpg\" alt=\"writing-prize-group\" width=\"577\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/laps.yorku.ca\/photos-of-2016-11-laps-writing-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016 winners featured finalists from both sides of the LA&amp;PS ampersand<\/a>, from the Humanities Department to the School of Social Work. Also noteworthy was a rare (but not unique) double winner, Val Muzik. Muzik won both the third- and fourth-year competitions, with two separate papers from two separate courses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe teams of adjudicators don\u2019t consult with each other,\u201d noted the competition\u2019s co-ordinator Professor <a href=\"mailto:jons@yorku.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Sufrin<\/a>. \u201cMs. Muzik is to be congratulated for her remarkable achievement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2016, the winners were:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 First-Year Hon. Mention: <strong>Mariah Marcutti<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10315\/32549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cDeaf Children and Youth\"<\/a>\u00a0from HUMA 1970, Worlds of Childhood, taught by Peter Cumming<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 First-Year Winner: <strong>Keshra Hines<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10315\/32550\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cPrecarious Migrants: the Effect of Globalization and Neoliberalism\u201d<\/a>\u00a0from SOSC 1190, International Migration, taught by Alina Marquez<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Second-Year Hon. Mention: <strong>Dayna M. Bernard<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10315\/32551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cDeveloping an Anti-discriminatory Approach to the Treatment of Injection Drug Users\u201d<\/a>\u00a0from SOWK 2050A 6.0, Identity, Diversity and Anti-Discriminatory Practice, taught by Anne McConnell<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Second-Year Winner: <strong>Samir Janmohamed<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10315\/32552\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\"Ethiopia and Policy\"<\/a> from SOSC 2800, Development in Comparative and Historical Perspective, taught by Merouan Mekouar<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Third-Year Hon. Mention: <strong>Nicolas Hore<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10315\/32553\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cRoman Bodies as Bodies of Romans: Corporeal Symbolism in Lucan's Pharsalia\u201d<\/a>\u00a0from HUMA 3107 6.00, Roman Republican Literature, taught by Sarah Blake<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Third-Year Winner: <strong>Val Muzik<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10315\/32554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cStasis, Flow and the Political Production of Mental Disorders\u201d<\/a>\u00a0from POLS 3070, Psychology and Politics, taught by Shannon Bell<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Fourth-Year Hon. Mention: <strong>Camila Acosta Varela<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10315\/32555\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cDecolonizing the Nation-State: Indigenous Autonomy, Extractivism, and Consultation in Contemporary Bolivia\u201d<\/a>\u00a0from SOSC 4607, Indigeneity and International Development, taught by Miguel Gonzalez<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Fourth-Year Winner: <strong>Val Muzik,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/10315\/32556\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cDo Words Speak Louder than Actions? Sovereignty Theatre in Canadian Arctic Policy\u201d<\/a>\u00a0from POLS 4101, Canada and the Arctic, taught by Gabrielle Slowey<\/p>\n<p>There were no entrants in the category of Major Research Project.<\/p>\n<p>Both the winning essays and the adjudicators comments can be found online, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/yorkspace.library.yorku.ca\/xmlui\/handle\/10315\/32548\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YorkSpace Repository for the LA&amp;PS Writing Prize<\/a>. The winners also received transcript notations,\u00a0 certificates and cash prizes.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the Faculty invites course directors to submit outstanding essays in any field but creative writing. The submissions are collected and organized by Writing Department staff into year levels (first to fourth year), with a special category for major research projects and undergraduate theses included.<\/p>\n<p>Then, small teams of full-time writing faculty (each responsible for a category) review the submissions. Using criteria of originality, research, expression (style, structure etc.) and overall significance, the teams choose a winner and a runner-up for each level of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, the competition received over 50 entries written in many different styles and on a wide variety of topics. Some departments held their own internal competitions first, to nominate their strongest submissions to the Faculty-level competition.<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 LA&amp;PS Writing Competition, open to papers
