Powell delivered her reading on Nov. 28.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_245426\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-245426\" class=\"size-full wp-image-245426\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2017\/09\/CWIP7Powell.jpg\" alt=\"Kerry Lee Powell\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-245426\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kerry Lee Powell<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Powell\u2019s debut poetry collection,\u00a0<em>Inheritance<\/em>, was nominated for the 2015 Gerald Lampert Memorial Award. In 2013, she won both the\u00a0<em>Malahat Review<\/em>\u2019s Far Horizons Award for Short Fiction and the\u00a0<em>Boston Review<\/em>\u2019s Aura Estrada Short Story Contest. Her debut fiction collection, <em>Willem de Kooning\u2019s Paintbrush<\/em>, was nominated for the 2016 Scotiabank Giller Prize, and was shortlisted for the Governor General\u2019s Award for Fiction, and the 2016 Rogers Writers\u2019 Trust Fiction Prize; it won the Alistair McLeod Prize for Short Fiction.<\/p>\n<p>Her short stories are dark and funny, and often centered on people who are dealing with trauma. Powell said, \u201cThe position of the alienated outsider is really at this point a defining and dominant force in popular culture.\u201d From strippers, to barflies, children and immigrants, most of her characters are outsiders living on the margins of society.<\/p>\n<p>On the power of literature to engage us not only emotionally but also intellectually, the writer noted, \u201cI want to acknowledge the pleasure of fantasy that realism offers, but I want to locate my stories within a fractured environment\u2026 It is important to not look away from what is disturbing.\u201d Her stories invite us not only to relate to the \u2018other,\u2019 but also to think about those aspects of reality that make us uneasy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-248178\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2017\/11\/PowellBookCover.jpg\" alt=\"Cover of Kerry Lee Powell's book\" width=\"252\" height=\"375\" \/>Powell spoke about her stories being not only mirrors to the world, but also a way of engaging with the world creatively, and of revealing its complexity. \u201cLiterature creates worlds, but it also shows the world as created by our own values. We can change our world,\u201d if we examine our values and their role in shaping our perceptions.<\/p>\n<p>The writer explained that she found in the painting style of abstract expressionist painter Willem de Kooning a kind of violence or desire to tear at the seams of reality, which inspires her own writing style. In her stories, Powell sees violence as \u201ca way of punching a hole through reality,\u201d challenging us to see and think about the world differently.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Writers in Person reading series will resume on January 16, 2018, with a visit from Paul Yee, who will be talking about his novel <em>A Superior Man.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Readings are free and open to any member of the public.
