W<\/span>hether <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> growing <\/span>E. coli<\/span><\/i> cells in a petri dish for scientific experiment, <\/span>conducting field work on marshes<\/span>,<\/span> or participating in a science outreach project in the community,<\/span> the Faculty of Science offers students an array of experiential education <\/span>(EE) <\/span>opportunities.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cExperiential education<\/span> is about exploring and experiencing the ideas learned in class through concrete experiences \u2013 w<\/span>hich could be in the classroom or lab<\/span>, at an organization or company, or in the community<\/span>,\u201d said <\/span>Michael Scheid<\/strong>, <\/span>associate dean of students in the Faculty of Science<\/span>. <\/span>\u201cIt leads<\/span> to deeper learning and better preparation for life after graduation, including the job market.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span>s a major hub of scientific research, the Faculty of Science provides a wide variety of <\/span>research <\/span>opportunities for our undergraduate students.<\/span> These <\/span>opportunities allow<\/span> students <\/span>to learn advanced lab skills, use equipment that <\/span>they<\/span> would not typically use in an undergraduate lab, interact with graduate students, learn in-depth in a particular field, and actually contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For instance, f<\/span>or the last three years, th<\/span>e Faculty of Science has offered Dean\u2019s Undergraduate Research Awards <\/span>(DURA<\/span>s<\/span>) to top<\/span> students to <\/span>gain hands-on research experience<\/span> in a ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ research lab<\/span>. <\/span>DURAs are <\/span>16-week <\/span>paid summer positions<\/span>. <\/span>These positions <\/span>give more <\/span>students exposure to what fro<\/span>ntline research really involves and <\/span>help <\/span>them<\/span> learn new skills and make informed ch<\/span>oices about their career paths.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These same students are invited to present their research either orally or through a poster at the annual Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Summer Undergraduate Research Conference, alongside NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award students and York Science Scholar <\/span>Award\u00a0winners<\/span>. All these students learn how to explain their research to those not involved in the research \u2013 a valuable skill they can continue to draw upon throughout their studies and beyond their degrees.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe event is an excellent opportunity for students to present their summer research projects, practice science communication, and meet and learn from other students,\u201d said Jennifer Steeves<\/strong>, associate dean of research and graduate education in the Faculty of Science.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> Faculty of Science also offers <\/span>field courses<\/span> where s<\/span>tudents <\/span>learn science <\/span>outside of lecture halls and indoor laboratories, sometimes as far away as<\/span> China, Africa or South America. Field courses<\/span> are a vital part of today\u2019s university learning. <\/span>One <\/span>summer offering as a course shared between <\/span>the Department of B<\/span>iology <\/span>and the Department of Geography <\/span>relies on <\/span>off-campus field <\/span>experiences<\/span> at the <\/span>Kortright<\/span> Conse<\/span>rvation Authority, where students put their research skills to use measuring<\/span> s<\/span>oil infiltration rates or studying <\/span>marshes<\/span> and watershed management<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOver the years, we have worked hard to provide field course options that are affordable, accessible and inclusive for all students seeking to experience ecology and environmental science field research,\u201d says <\/span>Faculty of Science Professor Dawn <\/strong><\/span>Bazely<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There are also opportunities for students to <\/span>participate in field courses outside of ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ. <\/span>The Ontario Universities Program in Field Biology (OUPFB) is a consortium of 15 Ontario universities, including York<\/span> University<\/span>, that have collaborated for 30 years by sharing <\/span>enrollment <\/span>places on the field courses offered by different universities. In this way, students at one university have access to 25 to 30 fie<\/span>ld courses each year at diverse<\/span> locations<\/span>, <\/span>each offering an authentic field research experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Faculty of Science undergraduate students have many opportunities to participate in research conferences<\/p><\/div>\n

In addition, the Departments of Biology and Chemistry offer undergraduate students the opportunity to complete non-credit, pass\/fail research practicum courses to obtain practical experience in a lab or in the field. Students arrange with a faculty member to participate in their research and complete a student-supervisor agreement that outlines the tasks and expectations. Students in these courses learn current research techniques and use these techniques to make a meaningful contribution to the supervisor\u2019s research program. The opportunities are meant to enrich and stretch beyond what is available in other courses.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
