  {"id":274607,"date":"2020-04-02T18:51:36","date_gmt":"2020-04-02T23:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfiledev.uit.yorku.ca\/?p=274607"},"modified":"2025-04-03T11:17:45","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T15:17:45","slug":"ai-fuels-research-that-could-lead-to-positive-impact-on-health-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2020\/04\/02\/ai-fuels-research-that-could-lead-to-positive-impact-on-health-care\/","title":{"rendered":"AI fuels research that could lead to positive impact on health care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Meet four 快播视频 researchers: Lauren Sergio and Doug Crawford have academic backgrounds in physiology; Shayna Rosenbaum has a PhD in psychology; Joel Zylberberg has a doctorate in physics.<\/p>\n<p>They share two things in common: They focus on neuroscience \u2013 the study of the brain and its functions \u2013 and they leverage advanced computing technology using artificial intelligence (AI) in their research ventures, the application of which could have a profound and positive impact on health care.<\/p>\n<p>In a nondescript room in the Sherman Health Sciences Research Centre, <strong>Lauren Sergio<\/strong> sits down and places her right arm in a sleeve on an armrest. It\u2019s an odd-looking contraption; the lower part looks like a sling attached to a video game joystick.<\/p>\n<p>Sergio is putting herself in the shoes of a person who has suffered a stroke that has hampered mobility in the arm. That\u2019s how strokes do their damage \u2013 a blood clot shoots to the brain and shuts off motor function. But what if you combined AI engineering and neuroscience research? What if that AI could tell your brain what to do to get your arm to reach and grab something?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_274609\" style=\"width: 970px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-274609\" class=\"size-full wp-image-274609\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2020\/04\/Lauren-Sergio.jpg\" alt=\"Lauren Sergio\" width=\"960\" height=\"430\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-274609\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lauren Sergio<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sergio, York Research Chair in Brain Health and Skilled Performance and core member of VISTA (Vision: Science to Applications), is working with IT Universe, a Toronto-based tech company, to develop the sleeve encasing Sergio\u2019s arm. A real stroke patient would also have an EEG cap on their head that measures brainwaves and virtual reality goggles over their eyes showing images of objects, such as a balloon. \u201cThen we say, \u2018Look at the red balloon and think about moving your hand to it,\u2019\u201d Sergio explains.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_274608\" style=\"width: 321px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-274608\" class=\"size-full wp-image-274608\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2020\/04\/arm_photo.jpg\" alt=\"Sergio demonstrates how a person\u2019s arm fits into the devise. Photo credit: Paul Fraumeni<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Given the disconnection between the brain and the arm that the stroke would have caused, the patient wouldn\u2019t be able to reach the balloon. But the robotic arm can. The team teaches it \u2013 through machine learning \u2013 to imitate or duplicate the brain activity associated with arm movement. Eventually, after the robot has been trained sufficiently, it takes that information, transmits it to the robotic arm, and facilitates the patient\u2019s hold on the balloon. And in repeating this task, the robotic arm feeds directions back to the human brain. \u201cThis helps repair those networks in the brain that were severed by the stroke.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_252892\" style=\"width: 353px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-252892\" class=\"size-full wp-image-252892\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/05\/Douglas-Crawford-1.jpg\" alt=\"Douglas Crawford\" width=\"343\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2018\/05\/Douglas-Crawford-1.jpg 343w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2018\/05\/Douglas-Crawford-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-252892\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Doug Crawford<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This kind of collaborative research, with a focus solving real-life problems, is exactly what <strong>Doug Crawford<\/strong> had in mind when he pitched VISTA to the federal government\u2019s Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF). In 2016, CFREF awarded York $33 million over a seven-year period. With matching funds from the University and contributions from industry partners, the total funding package is $120 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVISTA\u2019s goal is to take the outstanding model of interdisciplinary research laid down by York\u2019s Centre for Vision Research and expand on it to bring even more researchers from a greater of variety of areas together,\u201d says Crawford, VISTA director and Canada Research Chair in Visual-Motor Neuroscience. \u201cAnd our work is translational \u2013 meaning, fundamental [or discovery] research is important, but we\u2019ll see it through to application.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are over 80 researchers associated with VISTA. The range of disciplines is breathtaking \u2013 from computer science to forestry, from pain management to theatre performance. The potential applications of their work are equally mind-blowing \u2013 from the quality of animation in a movie to improving children\u2019s environmental health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shayna Rosenbaum<\/strong> is York Research Chair in the Cognitive Neuroscience of Memory and a core member of VISTA. She focuses on clinical neuropsychology, the study of the relationships between brain and behaviour. Her area of specialization is the role of the hippocampus, the part of the brain that stores information we need so we can navigate in our daily lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople with Alzheimer\u2019s become disoriented easily. That\u2019s partially because they\u2019re unable to learn how objects relate to one another, including landmarks. When they try to find their way in a new place, they often have difficulty.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_254316\" style=\"width: 353px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-254316\" class=\"size-full wp-image-254316\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2018\/07\/RosenbaumSTheScoop.jpg\" alt=\"Shayna Rosenbaum\" width=\"343\" height=\"343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2018\/07\/RosenbaumSTheScoop.jpg 343w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2018\/07\/RosenbaumSTheScoop-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 343px) 100vw, 343px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-254316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shayna Rosenbaum<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re interested in what happens when the person navigates familiar places. Because, even then, individuals in early stages of Alzheimer\u2019s can have difficulties. So, we'd like to detect this as early as possible because we think it\u2019s a good gauge of whether someone will develop the disease,\u201d Rosenbaum explains.<\/p>\n<p>VISTA has enabled her to collaborate with James Elder (York Research Chair<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>in Human and Computer Vision) and Matthew Kyan, both in York\u2019s department of electrical engineering and computer science. They are leveraging AI to develop real-world tasks that can be used to test older adults\u2019 navigation abilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe create situations in the computer program where an older adult has to circumvent the original, known route to get to a particular location. Some patients have difficulties generating the detour. They eventually arrive at their goal location, but it\u2019s very inefficient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rosenbaum has applied for funding for a project involving the creation of a computer model of the interior of Baycrest Health Sciences, a research and teaching hospital for older adults. \u201cWe\u2019ll put the model into virtual reality and use it to see how people learn to navigate in Baycrest. We hope to pre-expose individuals who plan to move into Baycrest to reduce instances of wandering or disorientation. Our technology might give them a sense of their new space and reduce their anxiety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joel Zylberberg<\/strong> came to York in 2019. He\u2019s the Canada Research Chair in Computational Neuroscience, a fellow at CIFAR (Canadian Institute for Advanced Research) and a core member of VISTA.<\/p>\n<p>Among his many ventures in applying AI to neuroscience, Zylberberg is looking into using functional magnetic resonance (fMRI) to teach computers to mimic brain activity. His goal is to help radiologists with their diagnoses.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_265693\" style=\"width: 305px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-265693\" class=\"size-full wp-image-265693\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/files\/2019\/06\/JoelZ.jpg\" alt=\"Joel Zylberberg\" width=\"295\" height=\"391\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-265693\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joel Zylberberg<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cA few University of Alberta radiologists have agreed to sit in a scanner and examine radiology images of their patients and do their diagnostic tasks, while we look at what their brains are doing. Then we\u2019ll use their brains as the teacher for our deep neural nets,\u201d Zylberberg explains.<\/p>\n<p>He says the goal isn\u2019t to replace radiologists with machines. \u201cIt\u2019s more likely to be a critical decision support tool: the radiologist would look at the image, feed it into computer software that mimics the learning ability of the brain and then study the output to see if they missed something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All four of these York researchers are excited about the possibilities, while also aware of the challenges that the brain presents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI can help us take the brain signals and try to figure out what the brain might be trying to send from the spinal cord to the muscles to the arm \u2013 something a baby picks up easily within days,\u201d says Sergio. \u201cThe technology isn\u2019t perfect yet, but we\u2019re making huge leaps. What\u2019s happening in robotics now is astounding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Zylberberg, what he values most is the multidisciplinary nature of VISTA. \u201cMy lab\u2019s in a weird kind of space.\u00a0We\u2019re not biologists or computer scientists.\u00a0I\u2019m a physics professor but I\u2019m not much of a physicist. So, without something like VISTA there wouldn\u2019t be a research community that my lab would fit into. VISTA has assembled an incredible community that covers the whole spectrum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rosenbaum stresses the real-world focus. \u201cVISTA has really allowed for this kind of work I\u2019m doing. It's important to show the link between the fundamental [discovery] research that we do, learning how the brain and AI work, and how that might apply to the real world and actually help people.
