Noseworthy\" class=\"wp-image-265694\" width=\"226\" height=\"299\"\/><figcaption>Theodore Noseworthy<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings are contained in the paper \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0749597822000346\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0749597822000346\" target=\"_blank\">Tangibility bias in investment risk judgments<\/a>\u201d&nbsp;published in the journal&nbsp;<em>Organizational Behaviour and Human Decision Processes<\/em>. The article was written by&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/schulich.yorku.ca\/faculty\/theodore-j-noseworthy\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Theodore Noseworthy<\/strong><\/a>, professor of marketing and Canada Research Chair in Entrepreneurial Innovation and the Public Good&nbsp;at Schulich, together with three co-authors: \u00d6zg\u00fcn Atasoy (University of Basel, principal investigator), Remi Trudel and Patrick Kaufmann (Boston University).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the researchers,&nbsp;there is a greater \u201cperceived permanence\u201d of tangible versus intangible assets \u2013 and this so-called perceived permanence affects market risk assessment and can also lead to an overblown sense of security. For example, the researchers note that&nbsp;when investors are focused on avoiding risk, they indicate a higher willingness to sell the stocks of companies that invest in intangible assets rather than tangible assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTangibility signals low risk because it\u2019s associated with a sense of permanence,\u201d says Noseworthy. \u201cAnd yet investments in real estate \u2013 about as tangible as it gets \u2013 can be extremely volatile.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRisk perception is an integral part of financial decision-making. A practical implication of our research is that companies may benefit from seeking ways to associate themselves with tangibility to reduce investors\u2019 perception of risk.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Impressions that a company is durable or lasting, or that it owns assets that are durable or lasting, may induce trust in investors, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe nascent markets for non-fungible tokens, crypto currencies and digital artwork present an interesting consideration in the context of our research findings. Indeed, some of our preliminary evidence revealed that consumers would perceive bitcoin as a less volatile asset if it had an actual physical coin to correspond with the virtual wallet, even if such a
