{"id":314574,"date":"2022-05-10T14:05:50","date_gmt":"2022-05-10T19:05:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=314574"},"modified":"2025-04-02T12:14:55","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T16:14:55","slug":"summer-program-gives-view-into-north-koreas-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2022\/05\/10\/summer-program-gives-view-into-north-koreas-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Summer program gives view into North Korea's culture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-two-week-summer-school-program-will-offer-an-opportunity-to-explore-the-secretive-country-s-literature-arts-and-propaganda\">A two-week summer school program will offer an opportunity to explore the secretive country\u2019s literature, arts and propaganda.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>News about North Korea often focuses on the country\u2019s politics and military, as do programs and courses offered at the post-secondary level, but there is much to learn about its art, music and culture, says 快播视频 public policy&nbsp;Professor <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.news.yorku.ca\/experts\/index.php?dept=&amp;mid=163313\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Thomas Klassen<\/strong><\/a> who has created a two-week summer program to address this gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/North-Korea-summer-school-poster.jpg\" alt=\"North Korea summer school poster\" class=\"wp-image-314580\" width=\"332\" height=\"470\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Students from York and around the world, including from Cambridge University, University of Berkeley and University of Hawaii, have registered to attend this non-credit program. Among the registered participants are journalists, researchers, artists as well as others with a deep interest in North Korean culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI look forward to learning more about North Korean propaganda, especially through the art and films produced by the country\u2019s authorities,\u201d says Soojin Park, a graduate student in North Korean Studies at Ewha Womans University in South Korea, who has enrolled in the summer school that will run from May 16 to 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Min Lee<\/strong>, a graduate student in social anthropology at York, is also eager to attend. \u201cI am excited to meet the instructors and guest speakers and listen to their experiences about North Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/eall.columbian.gwu.edu\/immanuel-kim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Immanuel Kim<\/a>,&nbsp;Korea Foundation and Kim-Renaud Professor at the Department of East Asian Languages and Studies at George Washington University, will lead the program along with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archoutloud.com\/nick-bonner.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nicholas Bonner<\/a>,&nbsp;who has been involved in the production of various documentary films on North Korea, including&nbsp;<em>Crossing the Line<\/em>&nbsp;and the feature film&nbsp;<em>Comrade Kim Goes Flying<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kim, who is the author of&nbsp;<em>Laughing North Koreans: Culture of the Film Industry<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Rewriting Revolution: Women, Sexuality, and Memory in North Korean Fiction<\/em>, will lead the first week, an introduction to key elements of North Korean culture.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second week, led by Bonner, will focus on topics such as foreign engagement with North Korean culture, films and architecture, and North Korea's strict socialist realism theme in various art forms. He will share his experience engaging in various art and film projects, and from his dozens of trips to the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The summer school is presented by the Korean Office for Research and Education (<a href=\"https:\/\/kore.info.yorku.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KORE<\/a>) at 快播视频 with funding support from the&nbsp;<a
