On Nov. 20, we recognize the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR). TDOR is an annual observance that honours the memory of Trans, Two-Spirit, non-binary and gender-diverse people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-trans violence due to discrimination, stigma and hate. TDOR was started in 1999 by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honour the memory of Rita Hester, a Black Trans woman who was killed in 1998. To this day, Hester's murder remains unsolved. In addition to the violence and discrimination that Trans, Two-Spirit, non-binary and gender diverse people face, it is important to remember that Trans Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) continue to be disproportionately affected by acts of violence, discrimination and transphobia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is much work to be done to educate and raise awareness about gender-based violence in our communities. At York, we believe that universities can and must play an important role in leading by example. The Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion<\/a>, for example, offers a variety of resources for students, staff and faculty with the aim of promoting a respectful, equitable, diverse and inclusive University community. A French language session on positive spaces (Cr\u00e9er et maintenir des espaces positifs) will be held on Nov. 17 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. as part of the ongoing REDDI Series for the Fall\/Winter<\/a>. Core to York\u2019s values is to champion diversity and inclusivity, embracing different perspectives, peoples, and ways of knowing, and fostering global fluencies and cross-cultural knowledges. York stands in solidarity with the Trans, Two-Spirit, non-binary and gender diverse community in the fight towards civil and social rights, justice and equity.\u00a0Everyone, regardless of how they identify, deserves to feel a sense of belonging. D\u00e9claration sur la Journ\u00e9e internationale du Souvenir trans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Le 20 novembre, nous c\u00e9l\u00e9brons la Journ\u00e9e du Souvenir trans (TDOR). TDOR est une comm\u00e9moration annuelle qui honore la m\u00e9moire des personnes trans, bispirituelles, non binaires et de genre divers dont la vie a \u00e9t\u00e9 enlev\u00e9e par des actes de violence transphobes en raison de la discrimination, de la stigmatisation et de la haine. TDOR a \u00e9t\u00e9 lanc\u00e9 sous forme de veille en 1999 par la militante transgenre Gwendolyn Ann Smith pour honorer la m\u00e9moire de Rita Hester, une femme noire transgenre qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 tu\u00e9e en 1998. \u00c0 ce jour, le meurtre de Rita demeure non r\u00e9solu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En plus de la violence et de la discrimination auxquelles sont confront\u00e9es les personnes trans, bispirituelles, non binaires et de genre diff\u00e9rent, il est important de se rappeler que les personnes trans autochtones, noires et de couleur (PANDC) continuent d\u2019\u00eatre touch\u00e9es de mani\u00e8re disproportionn\u00e9e par les actes de violence, de discrimination et de transphobie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il reste beaucoup \u00e0 faire pour former et sensibiliser \u00e0 la violence sexiste dans nos communaut\u00e9s. \u00c0 York, nous pensons que les universit\u00e9s peuvent et doivent jouer un r\u00f4le important en montrant l\u2019exemple. Par exemple, le Centre des droits de la personne, de l\u2019\u00e9quit\u00e9 et de l\u2019inclusion<\/a>, offre diverses ressources aux membres de la communaut\u00e9 \u00e9tudiante, du personnel et du corps professoral dans le but de promouvoir une communaut\u00e9 universitaire respectueuse, \u00e9quitable, diverse et inclusive. Une s\u00e9ance en fran\u00e7ais sur le th\u00e8me Cr\u00e9er et maintenir des espaces positifs (Positive Spaces) aura lieu le 17 novembre de 13 h \u00e0 14 h 30 dans le cadre de la s\u00e9rie REDDI pour l\u2019automne\/hiver<\/a>.
