Dear York community,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For those of you who may be arriving at York for the first time and those of you who are returning, I wish you all a warm welcome to the start of the 2023 winter term. I hope you had an opportunity to connect with family and friends over the holiday season and feel reinvigorated for an exciting year ahead.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/a>Many of you will have heard me talk about York\u2019s vision as a modern and progressive international teaching and research university committed to driving positive change for our local and global communities. This year is already shaping up to be a critical time in our institution\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n On Jan. 1<\/strong>, York welcomed its 14th chancellor, Kathleen Taylor<\/strong><\/a>. A York alumna, Kathleen was the first woman to serve on the board for a major bank in Canada and she remains a strong advocate for diverse representation across organizations and boards. I am excited to see her continue to right the future in her new role, where she will be a valued ambassador for students at York and a champion for higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We are also embarking on an important journey that will support the University\u2019s commitment to the values of equity, diversity, inclusion and social justice. The draft Decolonization, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy (DEDI) 2022-2027<\/a> aims to drive transformational change by embedding DEDI principles, practices and actions at an institutional level. The DEDI Strategy, which was created in consultation with a number of groups, including the President\u2019s Advisory Council on EDI, will strengthen our institution, support more equitable, diverse and inclusive communities, and create a place where everyone feels they belong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Markham Campus<\/a> is progressing well. York will mark the completion of the campus structure with a Topping Off ceremony in the weeks ahead as we move closer to our official opening in spring 2024. We are excited to welcome our first cohort of students for select programs this fall \u2013 to be delivered at our state-of-the-art Learning Space in the world-class IBM Canada headquarters until they can be transitioned into the new building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n York continues to respond to the urgent needs of the future through our partnership with the Vaughan Healthcare Centre Precinct. The centre is a significant opportunity for York to expand urgently needed health programs including our proposal for a new School of Medicine<\/a>. Designed to increase the number of family doctors and other primary care physicians, our unique population health curriculum combines data analytics and digital-health solutions with a team-based and patient-centred care model that will improve health equity for diverse and underserved communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These projects and many others continue to advance our University Academic Plan 2020-2025: Building a Better Future<\/em><\/a>. <\/em>I am excited to continue our work together as we strengthen our impact on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals towards building an inclusive, resilient and sustainable world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let me also take this opportunity to invite you to join me on Feb. 11<\/strong> for York\u2019s community skating event hosted with the City of Markham. All students, staff, faculty, course instructors, volunteers and partners are invited to attend whether you have skated before or not. Notre \u00e9bauche de strat\u00e9gie de d\u00e9colonisation, d\u2019\u00e9quit\u00e9, de diversit\u00e9 et d\u2019inclusion (DEDI) 2022-2027<\/a> vise \u00e0 favoriser des changements transformationnels en int\u00e9grant les principes, pratiques et actions DEDI au niveau institutionnel. La strat\u00e9gie DEDI a \u00e9t\u00e9 cr\u00e9\u00e9e en consultation avec plusieurs groupes, dont le Conseil consultatif de la pr\u00e9sidente sur l\u2019EDI. Elle consolidera l\u2019Universit\u00e9, favorisera des communaut\u00e9s plus \u00e9quitables, diverses et inclusives, et cr\u00e9era un espace o\u00f9 chaque personne \u00e9prouve un sentiment d\u2019appartenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Le campus Markham<\/a> progresse bien. Dans les prochaines semaines, York marquera l\u2019ach\u00e8vement de la structure du campus par une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie de cl\u00f4ture du chantier, alors que nous nous rapprochons de l\u2019ouverture officielle au printemps 2024. Nous nous r\u00e9jouissons d\u2019accueillir la toute premi\u00e8re cohorte \u00e9tudiante de certains programmes cet automne. Les cours seront donn\u00e9s dans notre espace d\u2019apprentissage ultramoderne au sein du si\u00e8ge social prestigieux d\u2019IBM Canada jusqu\u2019\u00e0 leur transfert dans le nouveau b\u00e2timent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n York continue de r\u00e9pondre aux besoins pressants de demain gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 son partenariat avec l\u2019espace de soins de sant\u00e9 de Vaughan. Il constitue une occasion exceptionnelle de d\u00e9velopper des programmes de sant\u00e9 urgemment attendus, comme notre proposition d\u2019ouvrir une nouvelle \u00e9cole de m\u00e9decine<\/a>. Unique en son genre et con\u00e7u pour accro\u00eetre le nombre de m\u00e9decins de famille et d\u2019autres m\u00e9decins de soins primaires, notre programme d\u2019\u00e9tudes sur la sant\u00e9 de la population associe l\u2019analyse des donn\u00e9es et des solutions de sant\u00e9 num\u00e9rique \u00e0 un mod\u00e8le de soins ax\u00e9 sur l\u2019\u00e9quipe et les malades qui am\u00e9liorera l\u2019\u00e9quit\u00e9 en mati\u00e8re de sant\u00e9 pour les communaut\u00e9s diverses et mal desservies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ces projets et bien d\u2019autres continuent de faire progresser le Plan acad\u00e9mique 2020-2025 de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 York :<\/a> B\u00e2tir un avenir meilleur<\/em>.<\/a> J\u2019ai h\u00e2te de poursuivre notre collaboration tandis que nous renfor\u00e7ons notre contribution aux objectifs de d\u00e9veloppement durable des Nations Unies afin de b\u00e2tir un monde inclusif, r\u00e9silient et durable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n J\u2019en profite aussi pour vous inviter \u00e0 vous joindre \u00e0 moi le 11 f\u00e9vrier<\/strong> pour un \u00e9v\u00e9nement de patinage communautaire de York organis\u00e9 avec la Ville de Markham.
