{"id":333030,"date":"2023-04-20T13:49:44","date_gmt":"2023-04-20T18:49:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=333030"},"modified":"2025-07-30T13:27:33","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T17:27:33","slug":"welcome-to-the-april-2023-issue-of-innovatus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2023\/04\/20\/welcome-to-the-april-2023-issue-of-innovatus\/","title":{"rendered":"Welcome to the April 2023 issue of 'Innovatus'"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Welcome to our April issue of <em>Innovatus.<\/em> This month, our newsletter shines the spotlight on the Faculty of Environmental &amp; Urban Change (EUC) as it celebrates <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodgoodgood.co\/articles\/how-to-celebrate-earth-month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earth Month<\/a>.<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"177\" height=\"204\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2019\/04\/Will-Gage-2019-e1608301566149.jpg\" alt=\"Will Gage\" class=\"wp-image-263837\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Will Gage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Each month, the Faculty continues to find innovative ways to respond to some of the most pressing challenges facing people and the planet. During Earth Month, which takes place every April, we have an opportunity to raise ecological awareness of the pressing issues impacting our people and planet, and EUC sees students as future changemakers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur Faculty of Environmental &amp; Urban Change is especially inspired by and committed to students. We are empowering students with fundamental knowledge, critical thinking skills, hands-on experience and global perspectives throughout our program offerings. Undergraduate students can choose majors in environmental arts and justice, environmental science, global geography, sustainable environmental management or urban studies. They can also mix and match these options through minors or certificates according to their passions and interests,\u201d EUC Dean <strong>Alice Hovorka<\/strong> says in the <a href=\"https:\/\/euc.yorku.ca\/why-euc\/hello-from-dean-hovorka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">welcoming address from the dean<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur programs highlight career readiness as a means through which students can realize their potential as changemakers in the workforce as problem solvers, policymakers, planners and leaders.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With its focus on experiential education for students, EUC is showcasing the <a href=\"https:\/\/euc.yorku.ca\/research-units\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">living labs<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2021\/04\/15\/deans-letter-to-the-community-transformative-change-through-hands-on-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transformative change<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/euc.yorku.ca\/equity-diversity-inclusivity-at-euc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">equity, diversity and inclusivity<\/a> in its programs.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This issue of <em>Innovatus <\/em>offers you a glimpse at several of the innovative initiatives the Faculty provides its students. Our first story demonstrates EUC\u2019s commitment to its living labs, such as the Ecological Footprints Initiative, Zig Zag Gallery, Maloca Garden, Waste Wiki and Las Nubes. EUC students undertake a change project through a Dean\u2019s Changemaker Placement (DCP), showcase it at a networking event and then apply for the Dean\u2019s Changemaker Award. The innovative work of these DCP students helps them become career ready and provides them with an opportunity to work with EUC\u2019s living labs. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EUC\u2019s dedication to student success is also evident in the Black Mentorship Program starting in Fall 2023. The initial phase consisted of a consultation with the EUC community (staff, alumni, students and faculty) focused on Black futures to inform best practices to ensure visibility, Black student success and accessibility. The new program also highlights the Faculty\u2019s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in its <a href=\"https:\/\/euc.yorku.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/EUC-BIAP-April-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EUC Black Inclusion Action Plan 2020-2025 Action Plan<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Student success, broadly speaking, is a large part of EUC\u2019s student education. Our third article demonstrates how, on alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays, EUC offers specialized lunch-and-learn opportunities, which influence employability and can help advance career success and satisfaction among students. Finally, in our last article, the range of experiential educational opportunities available to EUC students is detailed, emphasizing their positive impacts on students.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope you enjoy learning more about the path EUC has created to ensure a better future for all of us, especially as we enter this new world of unprecedented environmental leaders for green labour shift&nbsp;<br><\/a><\/strong>Faculty of Environmental &amp; Urban Change (EUC) Dean <strong>Alice Hovorka<\/strong> shares how the Faculty is empowering its students as changemakers and future leaders for a labour shift toward \"green jobs.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/2023\/04\/20\/deans-changemaker-placements-offer-unique-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dean\u2019s Changemaker Placements offer
