{"id":350370,"date":"2024-02-21T15:21:52","date_gmt":"2024-02-21T20:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=350370"},"modified":"2025-04-02T12:42:42","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T16:42:42","slug":"world-health-organization-extends-collaboration-with-global-strategy-lab","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2024\/02\/21\/world-health-organization-extends-collaboration-with-global-strategy-lab\/","title":{"rendered":"World Health Organization extends Global Strategy Lab\u00a0collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A World Health Organization Collaborating Centre (WHOCC) at 快播视频\u2019s Global Strategy Lab (GSL) \u2013 specializing in the global governance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) \u2013 had its impact recognized with a four-year extension, and expansion, of its mandate by WHO.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria, viruses and other microbes \u2013 and the infections they cause \u2013 stop responding to the medicines designed to treat them. AMR has a profound impact on global health and development \u2013 especially in low- and middle-income countries. It contributes to an estimated five million deaths annually and rolls back progress on many of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), including SDG 3 (Good Health &amp; Wellbeing), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GSL has emerged as a leader in addressing pressing global and public health challenges. In the area of AMR, GSL aims to use policy research to support evidence-informed decision-making by the world\u2019s governments and public health institutions to ensure sustainable antimicrobial use.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Susan-Rogers-Van-Katwyk.jpeg\" alt=\"Susan Rogers Van Katwyk\" class=\"wp-image-350269\" style=\"width:211px;height:281px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2024\/02\/Susan-Rogers-Van-Katwyk.jpeg 480w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2024\/02\/Susan-Rogers-Van-Katwyk-300x400.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Susan Rogers Van Katwyk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As a result, in 2019, GSL was designated the WHOCC on Global Governance of Antimicrobial Resistance. \u201cCollaborating centres have a concentration of expertise that WHO recognizes as valuable to achieving their mandate,\u201d explains <strong>Susan Rogers Van Katwyk<\/strong>, who is co-director of the WHOCC at GSL along with <strong>Steven Hoffman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past four years, the WHOCC at GSL has played a critical role in supporting the WHO\u2019s work on AMR policy and governance, resulting in its renewal for another four years. \u201cIt's exciting to know that the WHO values our support and the work that we've been doing with them for the last few years,\u201d says Rogers Van Katwyk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the WHOCC at York will continue its mandate of supporting evidence-informed AMR decision-making, its new mandate will include a greater focus on equity as it relates to policy and the governance of AMR. \u201cA focus on equity is something that the Global Strategy Lab is committed to and we're glad to have it spelled out in our mandate for the renewal term,\u201d says Rogers Van Katwyk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the additions the redesignation has brought to the WHOCC at GSL, Rogers Van Katwyk is especially excited about the greater emphasis on a \"One Health\" approach, which recognizes that human health, animal health and the environment are interconnected. \u201cMost of our research at the Global Strategy Lab already includes that perspective. It\u2019s where a lot of health research, especially around infectious diseases, is headed,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following its redesignation, Rogers Van Katwyk believes the WHOCC \u00adat GSL has the potential to make a profound impact on the future of global health and sustainability. \u201cWe recently undertook a mapping exercise of how AMR impacts the United Nations SDGs. There's almost none of them that aren't impacted,\u201d she says. \u201cIf we don't address AMR, we're not going to achieve the SDG on health and most of the other SDGs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rogers Van Katwyk and her team are ready to support better AMR policymaking and governance for a healthier and more equitable future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A World Health
