{"id":356193,"date":"2024-07-05T14:29:55","date_gmt":"2024-07-05T18:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/?p=356193"},"modified":"2025-04-02T12:47:28","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T16:47:28","slug":"york-u-initiative-amplifies-voices-of-refugee-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/2024\/07\/05\/york-u-initiative-amplifies-voices-of-refugee-youth\/","title":{"rendered":"快播视频 initiative amplifies voices of refugee youth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">快播视频\u2019s Singing Our Stories project, led by Professor <strong>Andrea Emberly<\/strong>, aims to amplify the voices of refugee and newcomer children and youth through music and collaborative arts creation.<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/yfile.news.yorku.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/s200_andrea.emberly.jpg\" alt=\"andrea emberly\" class=\"wp-image-314526\" style=\"width:267px;height:267px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2022\/05\/s200_andrea.emberly.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2022\/05\/s200_andrea.emberly-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Andrea Emberly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Partnering with refugee settlement agencies COSTI and CultureLink, as well as international research leaders in applied community music, Singing Our Stories mobilizes arts- and music-based programs to support the well-being goals of refugee children and youth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supported by a $447,000 grant from Canada\u2019s Social Sciences &amp; Humanities Research Council, the project explores how music-making, songwriting and storytelling can foster young people\u2019s well-being, cultural resilience and individual resilience. At the same time, it looks to challenge discriminatory assumptions about their experiences and addresses systemic barriers to their well-being during displacement, migration and resettlement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMusic is key to disrupting these barriers because it provides a tangible and creative way for young people to reclaim and tell their own stories and share insight into their own lived experiences,\u201d explains Emberly, an ethnomusicologist and York Research Chair in Children\u2019s Musical Cultures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal is for participants to begin healing, participate more fully in their own communities and cultures, and even begin to change prejudiced stereotypes held about them by others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among its efforts has been the Singing Our Stories festival, held in June at 快播视频 and community venues in Toronto, where children and youth from ongoing programs shared their music and arts. Part of the festival included a five-day residency called Common Ground Voices, running concurrently with the festival dates, led by world-renowned choral conductor and peace activist Andr\u00e9 de Quadros from Boston University.
