It is doing so with innovative new programs, including two rooted in biotechnology.<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"597\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/07\/Dan-Palermo.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Palermo\" class=\"wp-image-337490\" style=\"width:280px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/07\/Dan-Palermo.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2023\/07\/Dan-Palermo-400x383.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dan Palermo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe vision for the Markham Campus from the onset was to provide our students with access to high-level experiential education opportunities,\u201d said&nbsp;<strong>Dan Palermo<\/strong>, interim deputy provost, Markham. \u201cThis vision aligns with the broader vision of 快播视频 to expand experiential education opportunities for students across the institution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is also in response to what students want as part of their academic journey, even what parents want for their children as they go to post-secondary school. And it does prepare students better for the workforce,\u201d Palermo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Markham Campus offers degree programs and micro-credentials focused on EE, digital technologies and entrepreneurship. Among the courses benefiting from the campus\u2019s focus on EE are the brand-new Communication, Social Media &amp; Public Relations course, the Digital Technologies course and the Computer Science for Software Development course, which will all include work terms in Markham-based industries or non-profits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Markham Campus\u2019s new Master of Biotechnology Management (MBM) program and Graduate Diploma in Biotechnology will also advance the University's EE leadership, closely aligning classroom education with what the industry has said workers need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of the biotechnology programs, the course experiences were \u2013 in fact \u2013 specifically designed that way.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"799\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2024\/10\/Jade-Atalah.jpg\" alt=\"Jade Atalah\" class=\"wp-image-369482\" style=\"width:257px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2024\/10\/Jade-Atalah.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2024\/10\/Jade-Atalah-400x400.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2024\/10\/Jade-Atalah-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2024\/10\/Jade-Atalah-600x600.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jade Atallah<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Jade Atallah<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong>graduate program director of biotechnology at Markham and an assistant professor in the teaching stream in the Department of Biology; and <strong>Luz Puentes J\u00e1come<\/strong>, an assistant professor in the teaching stream in the Department of Biology, developed the curricula and pedagogical approaches of the biotechnology programs after listening to the industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPedagogically, we knew that experiential education must be at the centre of curricular delivery,\u201d Atallah said. \u201cBecause we were working with new programs, it was a relief that no retrofitting was needed. We were able to start from the ground up, where experiential education was at the centre and everything else came around it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, the graduate biotechnology programs incorporate immersive and multimodal experiential learning such as industry workshops, industry fireside chats, participation in biotechnology conferences, industry challenge questions, interdisciplinary capstone projects and industry internships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe bring in industry partners to act as industry mentors, and our graduate program students work in groups as consultants and try to solve a problem posed by the industry mentor,\u201d said Puentes J\u00e1come.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"725\" height=\"937\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/yfile\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/889\/2024\/10\/1000003703.jpg\" alt=\"Luz A. Puentes J\u00e1come<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn that way, they're working directly in an industry context. They go through the process of figuring out a solution for this program, doing some literature search and writing a white paper. Then they'll have a final presentation in which we will bring all the industry mentors together to observe the presentations and to network with our students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The programs are interdisciplinary. In the case of the MBM program, students integrate management training with the biotechnology portion of the course. \u201cThis would prepare the students to, perhaps, run a biotech startup,\u201d Puentes J\u00e1come said. For example, she said, \u201cthey might work toward creating a water bottle with biology, not fossil fuels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Marisol John<\/strong> is a student in the Master of Biotechnology Management program and is among those who have seen the many possibilities for a biotech career available to them through the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI have learnt so much about this industry, and I'm excited to continue this process of directly engaging with real-world industry problems,\u201d&nbsp;she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>John is already envisioning ways she can apply her in-class experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have a very deep passion for agri-bio and environmental biology,\u201d John said. \u201cComing from a Caribbean island, Dominica \u2013 the greenest island in the Caribbean \u2013 I think this program will afford me a diverse skill set to effect positive and sustainable change in my country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her undergrad thesis was based on the therapeutic applications of ginger, something John hopes to expand upon. Her grandparents treated flu and upset stomachs with ginger tea, and John\u2019s research showed it\u2019s used for many therapeutic reasons, including pneumonia, tuberculosis and asthma. But, she said, there is limited information available on these topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am using this to drive the rest of my career,\" said John. \"I am learning how various biotech industries can be integrated to bridge the knowledge gap and innovatively solve problems related to crops, agricultural sustainability, food processing and diversification. The possibilities are endless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the experiential education opportunities provided by the new Markham Campus \u2013 like those in biotechnology \u2013 the possibilities
